Winning start for Pro Life Kelburne Men's 5s

Hillhead 5s: 2

Pro Life Kelburne 5s: 3

Saturday 5 September 2015

Scorers: A Primrose (37 min); D Donaldson (40 min & 67 min)

The Pro Life Kelburne Men's 5 team got off to a flying start to the season with a well deserved win away to Hillhead 5s.

Kelburne started brightly with young Ciaran Willcox using his lightning pace to break down the right and he was unlucky to see his pass intercepted at the edge of the D. Kelburne kept up the early pressure and in the seventh minute Ciaran skilfully picked up a loose ball in the D but couldn't find a way to goal from a tight angle. However, Hillhead took the lead against the run of play when their impressive number 4 fired past Matthew Retson in goal.

Although the remainder of the first half play was dominated by Kelburne, Willie Hunt's experience at the back kept Kelburne in the game. On 15 minutes Willie was on hand to clear the danger after keeper Matthew Retson was rounded by a Hillhead attacker. Willie came to the rescue again on 26 minutes when he calmly rounded two Hillhead attackers to clear the ball after a save from Matthew.

Kelburne were unfortunate to go into the break trailing and almost had an equaliser when Aaron Primrose, making his Kelburne debut, was unfortunate to see his 34th minute shot go agonisingly by the Hillhead keeper's post.

Half Time Hillhead 5s  1-0  Pro Life Kelburne 5s

Kelburne started the second period in similar fashion and were rewarded with an equaliser two minutes into the second half when Aaron Primrose smashed the ball home after some good direct play from Ciaran Wilcox. Encouraged by this, Kelburne kept up the pressure and were unfortunate not to take the lead on 40 minutes when Jay Berry's quick reflexes saw him divert the ball onto the post following some good linking play by Dick Donaldson and Ian McIntyre. Jay's fine shot was picked up by Ciaran who reacted quickly to pounce on the loose ball and won a short corner. Play was held up for two minutes at this point as Kenny Gow and Hillhead's number 19 both received yellow cards after Kenny took exception to some unsporting comments the Hillhead player made towards young Ciaran. When play resumed, Kelburne went ahead thanks to Dick Donaldson's low shot drilled home from the edge of the D.

There then followed a long period of play dominated by Hillhead who equalised on the hour mark with a fantastic solo run and shot by their number 4. Hillhead nearly took the lead again with four minutes remaining but Matthew Retson reacted quickly to save the ball with his foot. The winning goal came in the 67th minute when Dick Donaldson showed some terrific dribbling skills before rifling the ball home from the edge of the D. Kelburne might well have added to their tally before the end when Ciaran was cynically tripped just outside the D after a good run.

Special mention must go to Aaron Primrose who, along with Willie Hunt and Dick Donaldson, helped to provide a solid spine to the team. Ian McIntyre's young squad clearly benefitted from the inclusion of these experienced players and their presence helped Kelburne to secure three points which they might not have gained last season. Man of the Match was Ciaran Willcox

After a successful start to the season, Pro Life Kelburne Men's 5s will go into their next match against Glasgow Academical Men's 1 with confidence. The match is scheduled to take place on Saturday 12 September at Glasgow Green with a 1.30pm pushback.
