With the first game of the season and after a tough pre-season of hard running, pitch sessions, and games against progressively tougher opposition the 1st XI were keen to get the game underway versus a tough opposition of a strong Menzieshill squad.
As the game got underway it was obvious that this wouldn't be an easy game with both sides having equal possession of the ball, but with some strong plays and interlinking play, it was not long until a short corner was awarded for the kelburne team after captain Johnathon Christie found a foot in the 'D'. Comfortably Lee Morton stepped up to smash the ball in past a helpless goalkeeper from the switch giving the home side the lead.
Within minutes of the ball being pushed back the ball was shortly intercepted giving the rapid forward Jack McKenzie time to sprint ahead winning yet another short corner which resulted in Lee yet again setting up to slot the ball through the keepers legs with a powerful sweep making the score 2-0. Unfortunately the kelburne side lost focus and with some sloppy defending and miscommunication the ball was hurled into the D allowing a Menzieshill forward to sweep the ball past goalkeeper Fergus Barrows into the goal to put the score at 2-1.
This gave Kelburne a lead of 2-1 at the half time
From an intense halftime team talk we had wanted to go out with intensity to up our game and show why we are the league champions, but the opposition had another plan for the end result, they had started the 2nd half extremely aggressively and shortly after a few bad tackles a corner was awarded for the opposition. With a powerful flick going to the goalkeepers right it was swiftly saved but cleared onto an oncoming injector who volleyed it into the open net. with the score now at 2-2.
Due to a lack of focus, and trying to rush the play , our new arrival, Gary Maitles' pass was intercepted close to the top of the 'D' where the ball was rifled past Fergus Barrows who was left in shock at what had happened. With the score at 2-3 there was a burst of brilliance from Michael Christie, Lee Morton, and Christopher Nelson leaving what appeared to be a game of ping pong with Michael slipping the ball into the goal! with the score at 3-3.
After being overconfident and with almost the entire kelburne team past the halfway a mishap in our attack allowed the ball to be intercepted with two high Menzieshill players being allowed to pass the ball around Fergus in goal to take the opposition into the lead yet again.
After trying to regain some sort of composure and as players began to tire this led to a mishap in communication allowing one of the Menzieshill players to remain unmarked to score a consolation goal.
