Pro Life Fitness Kelburne 3s record impressive first victory

Pro Life Fitness Kelburne IIIs    v    Hillhead 4s

Glasgow National Hockey Centre

Saturday 12th September

With a late afternoon start today, the young 3s Squad took to the field today, a very much changed team from last week.  Out went Fowler, Conner, MacPherson Morgan and Magee.  In came Bone, Ralph, Martin, Bantges and Donaldson and the stage was set for a great game against a full Senior Hillhead team.

The Game started off with Kelburne having most of the ball and the pressure on the Hillhead defence, however there was no way through during the first 15 minutes.  The midfield trio of Bone, Byrne and Donaldson were solid and taking the game to Hillhead who then started to flag when they lost their midfield playmaker to a finger injury.   After 20 minutes, Bone nudged the ball in to the Top of the D which was picked up by Billy Anderson on the move and he fired a cracking high shot in off the post.  1-0 to Kelburne.   Penalty corners started to come and after a few straight-hit misses, the 3rd corner was switched back to Anderson again who rammed home his 2nd of the match.    There was some good work down the right hand-side in the latter stages of the first-half by Byrne, Hughes, Rory Anderson and Niall but no goals came to pass.

Half-Time   - Pro Life Fitness Kelburne III  2 ? 0  Hillhead

The second half started quietly with neither team making any headway around the 25 yard line.   Finn was working hard down the right back space, making space and some nice passes for the midfield to move on to.  Rory created a great opening for Niall with a 50 yard scorcher to put him clear on goal. A 1on1 with no-one within 20 yards and a goal was expected, yet a goal was deprived when Nialls feet decided to run straight rather than around the goalie.  A collision transpired with no goal coming.     Kelburne pressure continued however and Johnny was sent free down the inside right with just him, the goalie and defender in tow, but they managed to shepherd him out of the D and break play down - another chance lost.    Another foray was made by Kelburne into the D, resulting in Anderson senior netting his hat-trick with a reverse stick sweep in to the roof of the net.   3-0 to Kelburne and the match seemingly in the bag however with 8 minutes left, Hillhead managed to squeeze home an impressive shot from a right angle, past the impressive Ogilvie in goal, reducing the deficit to 3-1.   Late on in the match, we introduced our penalty corner routine to the speciality drag flick from Finn ? who generated excellent power with the goalie just tipping it past the post.

Overall the team displayed an impressive work ethic today which saw them home to a very well deserved first win of the season and a very happy dressing room.   The 13 year-old forward line defended well from the front - they?re learning!   The midfield was efficient and inventive with the defence being solid with the welcome introduction of Alan Ralph back in to the squad and Gavin Bantges stepping in well at right/left back and the evergreen Gordon Martin finishing an impressive defensive line-up with young Finn.

The team go in to the next game on Saturday against Helensburgh (away) at Hermitage Academy, an 11.15hrs start for those who want to come and support.
