Reigning champions Q-Bikes Kelburne 2s began their league title defence with a home win

Q-Bikes Kelburne 2s v Stepps 2s

Saturday 12th September

Reigning champions Q-Bikes Kelburne 2s began their league title defence with a home game against Stepps 2s at Glasgow Green. Due to a number of injuries and unavailability the much changed squad had a veteran vibe running through it, seasoned regulars Fraser Scott, Fraser Hutchison, Matt McGinley and Ewan Carmichael were aided by veterans Colin Bryce, Ross McPherson, and Don Tervit, which resulted in a team more suited to the 00?s.
The team was eager to prove that age is just a number, and that they still had ?it?, the first attack of the game led to a goal. Tervit bamboozled his marker and drew a short corner. Hutchisons perfect injection was expertly stopped by Scott and McGinley rifled his strike past the keeper who was still trying to react to the initial strike as it rolled back past him off the back board. 1-0

The second followed soon after, good work down the right by Mark Conner and then Bryce resulted in the grizzled forward having possession on the baseline, his cutback enabled Tervit to strike to the back post and John-Gerard Shepherd to deflect high into the net. 2-0.

Kelburne continued their lightning start with several close calls before JG found space in the middle of the park, where he has able to silk two players before passing to Bryce on the left of the D, his pass to Tervit eliminated the last defender, and enabled Don to round the bemused ?keeper to score Kelburne?s third goal in only nine minutes. There were a number of close calls as the half progressed, Kelburne even had a short corner strike ruled out for being too high, despite it hitting the backboard.

A half time chat, which saw medics being sent for oxygen, amid cries of ?in my day?? resulted in minor bugs being corrected and a continuation of the game plan.
The host side started the second half as quickly as they started the first, Carmichael won the ball in midfield before feeding McGinley who was able to beat the entire defence singlehandedly before drawing the ?keeper and slipping McPherson in who couldn?t miss the empty goal. 4-0

The best move of the game resulted in the fifth and final goal. Richard Morgan won the ball in defence, passed right to Hutchison, to Tervit, who played a 1-2 with McPherson and then found Bryce in the D. Bryce?s slapped cross was eventually controlled by JG, before being despatched past the diving GK. A fantastic team move, and goal of the season contender.

As the half wore on tiredness set in, and the pursuit of ?it? became more elusive? Stepps were able to mount a few attacks of their own which were easily marshalled by the defence and a couple of good saves by new arrival Doug Turner.
