Another 3 points for the Men's 2s

Kelburne Men’s 2s v University of Glasgow Men’s 2s

24/3/2022 - 19:20pm

Kelburne 2s 4-3 UofG 2s

Scorers: JG Shepherd, Adam Bain, Fergus Duncan and Neil McIntyre

After such a strong first half of the season, start of year sitting top of the league, it is safe to say that Kelburne haven’t had the best of starts to the 2nd half of the season. Only picking up 2 points from a possible 12. For this young squad has resulted in from sitting very comfortably at the top, to fighting for 3rd place. A game under the lights at Glasgow Green was a chance to change that. Just before PB the heavens opened up which suited the pitch perfectly to play fast paced hockey.

As expected the game started off at very high tempo, Glasgow Uni pressed really high and were getting some luck with overloading the midfield. No clear-cut chances, but still threating to score. Then the opening goal came, Uni worked it well down the left-hand side creating 2v1s and managed to work the ball into the D and with an early shot came the first goal. 0-1
The lead did last long however Kelburne went straight back up the pitch and after winning a SC, the ball fell to JG who hit the ball with such little force it caused so much confusion and bounced off all the defenders sticks before trickling into the goal. 1-1
End of Q1 1-1.

The second quarter started off with a lot of good work from Kelburne, working round the back and building up. The rewards came quickly as Kelburne yet again won a SC and it was dispatched clinically by A.Bain. 2-1.
This didn’t last long however, and Uni came back the same way Kelburne did, won themselves a SC of their own and put it away into the bottom corner, keeper had no chance 2-2. As the half time whistle was coming ever closer both teams were determined to go into the break with a lead. With chances from Uni which brought out a few good saves from keeper A.Glen. and chances falling to F.Duncan, JG, C.McCaffer. just not able to finish them off, the half ended all square 2-2.
End Q2 2-2.

The second half couldn’t have started worse for Kelburne, with T.Hunt trying to dribble past 3 players and losing it causing a turnover which Uni greatly accepted and punished by putting the ball in the goal and with it going 2-3 up. Kelburne would now have to dig deep if they were to get anything from this game.
Kelburne just kept playing the way they know best, fast moving and going forward. With great play round the back from Brolly, Connor and Robbie this allowed the likes of Jack, Donaldson and Caldwell to get the ball in space and start up the attack.
Kelburne had won the ball in midfield, played forward to Duncan who had loads of space to run into, with his pace he gladly accepted it. With a pass to a teamate that turned out to be a pass to himself taking a player out the game he found himself at the top of the D which he then released a venomous hit going straight into the bottom corner 3-3 game on.
2 mins later Kelburne found themselves in the D again with a ball from the back by veteran Tervit. After a scramble in the D the ball fell to McIntyre who put the ball into the goal and with it the lead for Kelburne 4-3.
End of Q3 4-3.

The fourth quarter was understandably a nervy one. With Kelburne holding on to what they have and Uni pressing for another goal. Great play from Bolland and Hunt help ease some of the pressure whenever they had the ball was enough to help with the nerves of the squad. Uni won themselves several SC’s but Kelburne were able to deny them from getting anything else in the game. Game was controlled and the sting was taken out. End of 4Q 4-3.

Very important 3 points for Kelburne, not just to help with league position but more so for confidence. They will be wondering what could’ve been at the end of the season with regards to the league but do have a plate semi final to look forward to and are still in the hunt for some silverware, this is where the focus must lie. With such a young squad this will be huge to reach another final and should be hopeful of achieving this.

Honourable mention to M.Byrne who came off injured during the game, to E.Carmichael who was ruled out before the game and AW for watching the game during his shift. All support appreciated.

Frustrating Draw for Men's 2's

Kelburne Men’s 2s v Dunfermline & Carnegie Men’s 2s

4/3/2022 - 12:20pm

Kelburne 2s 0-0 Dunfermline & Carnegie 2s

Scorers:

Kelburne 2s were at home against the inform Dunfermline and Carnegie men’s second team. Kelburne came into this game sitting at top of the table looking to extend their lead , with two recent loses against Morton and Watsonians they were hungry to get back to winning ways.

The sun looming over Glasgow green an unfamiliar sight. Kelburne opted to play a 4-3-3 with the front line possessing a wealth of experience and strong youth embedded throughout the team. From the start both teams were playing some fluid hockey passing around with confidence ,but with very little attempts at goal. The game looked evenly poised as there was no clear dominance from either team.

The second half however was a different story. Both teams came out the blocks with great intent trying to break the deadlock but who was it going to be? Young Ally Glen in goals was immense, pulling of several key saves denying anything that came his way which earned him the worthy MOM award . The last quarter was frantic to say the least , both teams out of ideas on how to gain the advantage and pick up the 3 points. Both teams resolution to this was sporadic hockey with no clear plan and plenty of crash balls . The result of this; no end product , no goals and no winner. Full time was up , nothing to separate the two teams. Kelburne visually frustrated wanting more, but plenty of positives to take away from the game. The drive , passion and fitness was there just a few pieces missing and for sure will be back to winning ways.

Ladies 2s show fighting spirit to stay top!

Kelburne Ladies 2s v Stewarton Garnock Ladies 1s

19/11/2022 - 12:30pm

Kelburne 2s 2-2 Stewarton Garnock 1s

Scorers: Jen Owen and Alice Ferguson

Kelburne Ladies 2s team set out on a cold November morning to see if they could continue their unbeaten streak. With a 12:30pm pushback for Kelburne, there was a series of great passes between midfield and upfront but with a stroke of bad luck and strong midfield from Stewarton Garnock, the other team scored an early goal just a few minutes into the first quarter. Spirits were slightly low, but Kelburne kept pushing with some great defence work and effective shots up the pitch from Carol Feeney. There was some impressive play from midfield and upfront in Stewarton’s half and lots of pressure towards the D. Despite this, the other team kept strong and flicked in another goal, bringing the score to 2-0. There were a couple of short corners awarded to Kelburne, but neither successful.

As the second quarter rolled into action, there was still a lot of pressure and strong passes between Stewarton which resulted in play being mostly in our half, but a lot of determination and strong stickwork kept the ball away from our goal. After a breakaway across to the other side, a short corner was awarded, with a fantastic shot from Jen Owen towards the right corner. Sadly it bounced off a defender’s stick, and the players continued to try win a goal but it wasn’t to be as it was hit out.

Half-time and, after a positive discussion with coach Shaun and ideas from players, the 2s were much more confident as a team and played their absolute best, resulting in a third quarter of excellent play in Stewarton’s half. There was some great organisation from Carol and Jen Morgan, and lots of work in midfield, helped by Anna Thomson and Esme Freeburn from Ladies 1s. Our first goal was near as Bella Martin passed the ball up the line and opened up the play for the strikers. There was a lot of pressure around the D and consistent passes across from Jen Owen, Jen Morgan, Fiona McGrane, Mairi Macpherson and others, but it was eventually hit out and the ball was given to Stewarton Garnock. However, just after they passed it to their defender in the D, immediate pressure was applied, the ball was won and flicked in by Alice Ferguson, bringing the score to 2-1 to Stewarton.
This gave a boost of confidence to the team and play continued, with some great defence work from Carys Hindle and Becca Feeney. At one point, the ball sailed up towards the goal but was expertly blocked by Elaine Torry who had volunteered to be the goalkeeper and made some excellent saves for an outfield player.

Into the fourth and final quarter, which was very well dominated by Kelburne with lots of play in Stewarton’s half and great chances at goal. Set-ups for sidelines and 16s got much better throughout the game, resulting in a series of fantastic stops from midfielder Isla Christie, constantly gaining the ball back for a pass into the D. After a few minutes, a short corner was awarded to Kelburne, a great chance to bring the score to a draw. With a strong injection from Esther Walker, Jen Owen struck the ball and it sailed over the defender’s stick and past the goalkeeper, hitting the backboard with great force. The players were elated and this brought them even closer to maintaining their well-deserved undefeated streak.
With only a few minutes left, The whole team worked tirelessly to keep Stewarton from scoring any more, and still applying lots of pressure to their defence. No goals from either side were won however, and the whistle blew to signal their draw.

Most would say it was a very even game as Stewarton had a very similar team and skill-level. Still, Kelburne kept their heads up and it was another well-played game for the unbeaten team and some good practice for those that went on to play Sunday’s match against Hillhead 4’s.

Men's 2s top the tree at Christmas

Kelburne Men’s 2s v University of St Andrews Men’s 1s

19/11/2022 - 12:20pm

Kelburne 2s 4-0 St Andrews 1s

Scorers: Fergus Duncan, Ewan Carmichael, JG Shephard and Callum McCaffer

With race night, fast approaching minds might have been elsewhere pre-game. After 5 minutes, it was obvious that this might have been the case. Guys weren’t taking the game seriously, so up stepped captain Carmichael to remind the team that you need to focus on the job in hand.

Kelburne started slowly running with the ball at every opportunity, with the team shape all over the place, therefore allowing St Andrews to actually think they might have a chance against the league leaders.

The first 1/4 went past without any goals with sloppy play from Kelburne, allowing St Andrew to have too much of the ball. After a good talking to from coach Chris Caldwell, and a shuffle of the pack, including deploying veteran Don Tervit up front to add energy to the forward line who looked slow and uninterested in events happening on the pitch. Within 5 minute's Kelburne took the lead through Fergus Duncan playing his first game for the 2s with a nice touch to slide the ball under the St Andrews goal keeper. Kelburne then made it 2 with a short corner conversion from J Shepherd with a nice low shot to the beat keeper to his left hand side. Kelburne lead two nil at half time.

Another stern talking to at half time from Caldwell made sure the lads didn’t relax and allow St Andrews back into the game. Kelburne began to marshall the game and snuffed out the attacks, solid defending from Tervit, Brolly, Hunt and Robbie, kept the score to 2-0 in the home teams favour with some great composure. Mopping up the midfielders mess, for slow, sloppy passing. Slack play from St Andrews allowed Kelburne to score a third goal with a tap in from Callum McCaffer who couldn’t miss from 1yd out, from his firat touch of the match. Kelburne scored again just before the full time whistle to finish the game 4-0. Credit goes to Fergus who played his first game for the 2s and scoring on his debut.

The team finish the first half unbeaten in the league and top for Christmas. The team look to build on the great start in the new year but are well aware that they are still developing and in no way favourites for the league but have progressed well so far.

Stirling left Wandering with Kelburne comeback!

Kelburne Ladies 1s v Stirling Wanderers Ladies 1s

19/11/2022 - 14:20pm

Kelburne 1s 3-2 Stirling Wanderers 1s

Scorers: Simone Upman (2), Zoe Greener

The sun shone at Glasgow Green as the Ladies 1s made their last league appearance of 2022 against a Stirling Wanderers team with whom the teams drew in their last meeting. The game promised a close battle based upon previous spectacles.

As has become a trait this season, Kelburne started slowly and gave the ball away several times leading to Stirling having the better of the opening exchanges. 5 minutes in and Stirling capitalised on several misplaced paces to come down the right and slot in past Gillian Callander between the posts. This was quickly followed by a second to give Stirling the cushion they wanted and to leave Kelburne reeling at the end of the first quarter.

Coach Colin McClure had to earn his strips and get his ladies fired up with a big quarter needed to bring them back in to the game. As has been the way many times this season, when Kelburne has needed a talisman to turn to, their leading lady from South Africa has provided the firepower and today was to be no exception with Simone Upman bullying the Stirling defence to flow past the diving keeper and slot home to bring Kelburne back in to the game. Kelburne continued to dominate proceedings but to no avail and went in at the break 2-1 down.

Kelburne came out in the second half looking to take the game to Stirling and it wasn’t long before the game was all square with Zoe Greener cooly volleying past the keep after some great build up play across the whole team. The game has turned and Stirling were on the ropes with Kelburne creating chances at will. The third quarter past and the intensity was ramped up but cool heads were required when Simone was shown a yellow card for breaking up the play. This didn’t stop Kelburne from pushing on for all 3 points and it was poetic justice that Simone Upman would return to pitch to drive past the keeper to claim her second of the game and secure three points for the Paisley side.

The first half of the season has come to end for the ladies with some positive performances to be proud of and some areas of improvement to build upon going in to what looks like a bright 2023.

Experience comes through against the Ladies 1s

Kelburne Ladies 1s v Perthshire Ladies 1s

12/11/2022 -

Kelburne 1s 1-8 Perthshire 1s

Scorers: Simone Upman

The young, inexperienced, Kelburne team travelled up to Perth to face a strong Perthshire team flying high in the National League.

The first quarter was dominated by short corners from both teams with Perthshire finding the net inside the opening 10 minutes despite two excellent saves from Gillian Callander between the posts. As the quarter drew to an end, Kelburne settled into their own rhythm with some quick passing creating up opportunities down both wings but with no clear chances coming. At the end of the first quarter the Perthshire side held a slim lead at 1-0.

The second quarter started as the first ended with Kelburne looking to use the wings to open the game up. Unfortunately the next goal was to be to the team from Perth who, using their fast style of play, managed to capitalise on a lapse of concentration from the young Kelburne side to slot the ball home after some slick passing. This rejuvenated the ladies and saw them create several opportunities, including a disallowed short corner before Simone Upman continued her impressive form to slot home following some excellent work from Jess MacKenzie. The lead to a frantic end to the second half with Perthshire winning four short corners but the Kelburne defence held firm to keep the score to 2-1 at half time.

Perthshire came out in the second half looking to use their experience to put the game to bed and they were helped by an early goal to restore their two goal cushion. Kelburne looked to respond again but were opened up on the counter to allow Perthshire to put the game in their control at 4-1. The fourth quarter started in the same fashion with Perthshire getting a fifth and sixth goal in quick succession. Coach Colin McClure then took off his goalkeeper to try and wrestle back some initiative but it wasn’t to be as Perthshire slotted in twice more before the final whistle. 8-1 was a poor reflection on a young team who were undone by their oppositions experience.

The ladies go again next week against Stirling Wanderers at Glasgow Green.

3s lose out in game against Rottenrow

Kelburne Men’s 3s v Rottenrow Men’s 1s

12/11/2022 - 2:20pm

Kelburne 3s 2-5 Rottenrow 1s

Scorers: Adam Bain and Cole Norrie

The Men’s 3s were back in action at Glasgow Green against a Rottenrow side looking to continue their recent good form.

The game started at a fast pace with the slick Glasgow Green pitch helping to enable the passing of both sides. Rottenrow were the team that settled quickest and looked to move the ball around creating a couple of half chances that amounted to nothing. Kelburne rode out the first few minutes and looked to get themselves a platform in the game built upon the experience of David Fowler and Richard Morgan at the heart of defence. The young Kelburne side then started to take the game to ‘Row’ with a couple of chances falling to youngsters Adam Jack and Cole Norrie alongside the cool head of Martin Bryne. 15 minutes in to the game and Kelburne got themselves a short corner. The ball was fired in by Adam Bain who collected the return ball from David Fowler and slotted beyond the goalkeeper to put Kelburne 1-0 ahead. This saw a reaction from Rottenrow but the fast pace of wide men Daniel Docherty and Fergus Duncan allowed Kelburne to counter and meant that ‘Row’ couldn’t advance up the pitch as much as they would like. The game saw chances fall either way but it was to be Kelburne who were to take advantage with a great counter attack from the youngsters, involving some fantastic inter linking play, ending with Cole Norrie slotting the ball in to the bottom corner, 2-0 to Kelburne. At this point Kelburne looked to be in control of the game but Rottenrow managed to snatch one back before half time with a controversial goal from ‘Row’ Captain, Chris Lawson, as he played one in from the edge of the D, GK Ally Glen leaving the ball, but the umpire gave the goal saying the ball was inside the D when played. 2-1 and Kelburne needing to regroup at half time.

Half Time: Kelburne 2-1 Rottenrow

The second half started at the same intensity of the first but with Rottenrow visibly more physical and trying to intimidate the young Kelburne players who were using their skills to great effect. Chances came and went from both sides in the first 10 minutes but it was to be Rottenrow who would strike next to level the game with a low shot in to the bottom left corner. Fitness and substitutes were to be the deciding factor between the two teams as Rottenrow started to take hold of the game and the frustration of the Kelburne players grew at the situation. With 15 minutes of the game left, Kelburne were opened up and took the lead for the first time. This saw a frantic last 10 minutes with Rottenrow testing the umpires with their approach but enabled the team in green to score twice more and to finish the game 5-2.

A high intensity game that rested on a few key moments. A good learning curve for the team and one that will hope to see them challenge other teams throughout the league.

As the game continued kelburne dominated with a near shot from Fiona hitting the post . Another short corner at 10 minutes saw a exceptional save pulled out from the Ferguslie goal keeper but came back into the D with ester walker getting a tap in at the back post , a good way to celebrate her birthday tomorrow . Kelburne won Another 2 short corners at 13 minutes and 16 minutes but they were dealt well with by the ferguslie defence .

As the 3rd quarter began a run from one of Ferguslies players through the middle of the park was expertly dealt with by centre back Cary’s Hindle who despite being on the floor managed to clear the ball wide. Brilliant play from Isla and Alice in the D resulted in a short corner being granted however the shot by Jen Owen was pushed over the goal by ferguslie defender . However moments later a turnover from ester walker and a brilliant run from Alice Ferguson resulted In a expert pass across the D to Elaine T who slotted it away . More fantastic play From Jen Owen lead to the rebounded shot coming to Alice Ferguson but ferguslie defence managed to push wide . Relentless Kelburne struck with 3 minutes left on the clock with Alice Ferguson converting from the lose ball and making it 7 for the girls and a hat trick for herself not bad for the midfielder . With the full time whistle blown a brilliant performance from the young Kelburne team see the girls still undefeated this season .

Kelburne 2’s Continue Unbeaten start

Kelburne Men’s 2s v University of Glasgow Men’s 2s

29/10/2022 - 15:00pm

Kelburne M2s 1-1 Glasgow Uni M2s

Scorer: Charlie Feeney

On 29/10/2022 Kelburne Men’s 2’s continued their unbeaten start to the season against Glasgow Uni

Kelburne didn’t make the best of starts to the game with GU applying pressure right from the start in the first quarter and creating a couple of chances that called Lewis Berry into action who made some good saves early on to keep the score level. Kelburne started to grow more into the game as the quarter went on but were not up to their usual standards in the first quarter but still created a few chances.

Kelburne started the second quarter more positively and created some good chances with Callum McCaffer played in 1 on 1 with the keeper but some good tracking back from GU meant Callum was only able to win a short corner. GU again created some good chances, but some good defensive work and great goalkeeping meant the score was 0 – 0 at half time.

Kelburne started the 3rd quarter brightly and their hard work was rewarded when a long corner was taken quickly by Martin Byrne and played into the D where it was deflected by Scott Love to Charlie Feeney who finished well to put Kelburne in front. Kelburne continued to play well throughout the 3rd quarter and created numerous good chances the best of which came when Don Tervit Played a long ball up to Callum McCaffer who slipped it back post to Steven Berry who was unfortunate not to put Kelburne 2 in front. Kelburne go into the final quarter leading 1-0 but were unfortunate because they could be 2, or 3 Infront.

GU start the final quarter well Pressing Kelburne high up the park creating a frantic pace that would dominate the final quarter. Some careless play from Kelburne meant GU where able to win the ball and play it quickly up the pitch to their forward who takes a reverse which is initially saved by Lewis 65ikoljwqwqwho’s unlucky as it falls to a GU player who slid the ball into the net to make it 1-1. The frantic tempo continued for the remainder of the game with both sides having some chances but ultimately the final whistle would go with the score at 1-1.

Kelburne continued their unbeaten start to the season and remain top of the table but, will feel unlucky not to have taken the 3 points having created numerous good chances and having conceded from a frantic period of play. There were many positives to take from the game with Kelburne creating good chances and continuing their positive development this season under coach Chris Caldwell.

Kelburne 2’s take on Edinburgh Uni 4’s at home next weekend.

Young 4s show promise in the Linwood Rain

Kelburne Men’s 4s v Helensbrough Men’s 2s

22/10/2022 - 12:00pm

Kelburne M4s 2-7 Helensbrough M2s

Scorer: Willy Hunt (2)

In a rain soak Linwood at noon on 22 October Kelburne 4’s sought to continue there West District league quest against Helensburgh 2’s.

Umpires pre match did have a decision to make as condition underfoot were very slippery and the pitch was showing signs of the holding water before a ball was pushed. However with the pitch deemed safe and play allowed to start.

It was Kelburne from the push back, who had early pressure. In the first few minutes they had the ball crashing through the dee and out for a Helensburgh 16. Positive signs from Kelburne’s developing young talent pool.

However, Helensburgh quickly responded at the other end with a drive down the right wing and a fizzing shot straight across the Kelburne dee, fortunately this was not met by any player and the ball was keenly watch out by Kelburne’s keeper. Perhaps this was a sign of what Helensburgh had un the locker, with what looked like big strong outfit they had brought to Paisley.

Indeed it was not long before Helensburgh were back on the attack securing the 1st short corner of the day, after a Kelburne foot inside the dee. Another foot from the corner lead to a 2nd successive short corner, fercily contested by Kelburn.

Only 9 mins in and Helensburgh’s continued pressure does force the breakthrough and it’s 0-1 Helensburgh.

Kelburne look to respond immediately and make it up the park forcing a long corner after good work by Angus Menzies. A promising attack thwarted by a strong Helensburgh defence on this occasion.

As we reach the mid way point in the 1st half, Helensburgh are starting to make the experience tell and pressing high up the park with Kelburne struggling to get out there half for prolonged periods.

However a determined group are Kelburne and again play down the left side saw some excellent interchange play from Angus, Ian and Bruce force a Kelburn short corner. A good structured attack from the short corner resulted in a Helensburgh’s keeper being required to make a solid save.

As the 1st half advances, Helensburgh started mounting continued presssure and force a number of saves from Kelburne’s goal keeper who is seeing more of the action than he would like.

In 26mins Kelburne, against the run of play, break on the right, which results in a short corner. After the initial attack from the corner was well defended by Helensburgh, the follow on play and pressure saw Wille Hunt take advantage GOAL!!!
And it is 1-1.

However, poor Kelburne marking resulted in a very simple Helensburgh goal just after the 30min mark. 1-2 Helensburgh.

Kelburne did press near the end of the half with a couple of opportunities fizzle out without any real ask of the Helensburgh defence or goalkeeper.

Half time 1-2 and a chance for Kelburne to regroup.

The second half started in better conditions than the first with the rain easing and the underfoot conditions looking better.

Helensburgh break from the start and extend there lead with an early goal. 1-3 Helensburgh. Not the start Kelburne were hoping for at the start of the 2nd half.

Kelburne did pull one back via a W. Hunt PF, after the Helensburgh defender was deemed to illegally prohibited a goal scoring opportunity with a foot 4 yards out.
2-3 Helensburgh.

As the game entered the final third, gaps were really starting to emerge in the middle of the park with no team really able to take any advantage. Just then Helensburgh break forwards and move straight through on goal leaving the keeper no chance 2-4 Helensburgh.

The last 10mins of the game prove very challenging for Kelburne, the Helensburgh strength and depth of squad really starts to show as Kelburne appear to show fatigue from all the pressing they have been doing throughout the game.

Helensburgh continued pressure results in a series of consecutive short corners without conversion.
Kelburne short corner against the run of play results in a mis communication at the edge of the dee and the ball breaks to Helensburgh who quickly advance to the opposite end of the pitch and it is another goal 2-5.

In the dying minutes of the match Helensburgh add a further two goal to close the match out convincing and deserved 2-7 winners.

While the final score reflects badly on the young Kelburne side, it perhaps is an unjustified reflection on the overall performance of a young team who were up against a much older, stronger, more physical and experienced side from Helensburgh today. There remains many green shoots for this Kelburne side and with time it is clear things will come together.

Goals Galore for Ladies 2s

Kelburne Ladies 2s v GHK Ladies 2s

22/10/2022 - 15:30pm

Kelburne L2s 4-0 GHK L2s

Scorers: Kerri O’Hara (2), Jen Morgan and Esther Walker

1st Quarter saw the Kelburne team come out strong putting lots of pressure on their opponents. The defence were solid at the back stopping GHK from getting many shots on target and our keeper Cheryl Twumasi easily deflected anything that squeezed through.
In the 2nd quarter after a quick pep talk by coach Shaun Jardine-Malone the team came out firing on all cylinders and quickly put together fluid passes from the back all the way forward allowing Kerri O'Hara to slot two goals away after some superb team play.

Half time came just in time to give the 12 person squad a bit of a rest and talk over some tactics

Going into the 3rd quarter the team work solidly to create chances and managed to win a sequence of short corners, on the 3rd one Jen Morgan managed to wrong foot the keeper and get the ball to hit the backboard.

In the last quarter the team were getting tired but continued to push forward. Holding the middle of the pitch and making it difficult for the opposition to break through. The team kept fighting all the way the final whistle with Esther Walker scoring the 4th goal just as the final whistle was blown.
Fantastic performance from all players.

The team play again next Saturday 29th against Argyle at Glasgow Green National Hockey Center.

Upman strikes again but Ladies 1s rue missed chances

Kelburne Ladies 1s v Aberdeen University Ladies 1s

22/10/2022 - 14:15pm

Kelburne L1s 1-1 Aberdeen Uni L1s

Scorers: Simone Upman

Our ladies were facing their third University side of the season, this time against Aberdeen Uni 1’s.

The students started brightly, and arguably should have been ahead in the first quarter but stand in goalkeeper, Gillian Callander, produced some crucial saves to keep Kelburne in the game. The Kelburne defence was standing resolut with Lois Craig making several clearances off the line and Jenna Brolley and Charley Austin with some vital touches which prevented Aberdeen scoring.

In the second quarter, there was some nice interlinking play between Anastasia Hinde at left wing back and the central three midfield players. Several cross balls in, with many touches just going wide of the target was frustrating for the home side. Jessica MacKenzie, Simone Upman and Zoe Greener all having attempts at goal but to no avail. Kelburnes luck finally turned when Simone reacted to the Aberdeen goalkeeper’s fine save with her rebound attempt lifted high into the net to make it 1-0. Aberdeen Uni managed to get a goal back making it 1-1 at half time.

Though an end to end third quarter, the score remained the same going into the final 17minutes of the game. Kelburne continued to work the ball and created openings in the Aberdeen defence but the quality of the final ball was missing with Kelburne unable to open a lead. There was some good attacking play along the baseline from Ava Graham as well as some close opportunities for Anna Thomson and Simone. Three corners were awarded in the final minutes of the game. Aberdeen’s defence remained strong and frustratingly the game ended 1-1.

The girls look to take the positives from this game into next week’s game, away at Granite City.

Strong Performance for the Ladies 2s to see off Giffnock

Kelburne Ladies 2s v Giffnock Ladies 1s

15/10/2022 - 12:pm

Kelburne L1s 3-1 Giffnock L1s

Scorers: Jen Morgan and Jazlyn Sandhu (2)

In the first quarter kelburne started strong with Jen Morgan winning a few short corners but giffnock defended them well. Giffnock then put pressure on kelburnes defense and managed to secure the first goal of the match but not long after Jazlyn Sandhu evened the score with a reverse shot at top D. Giffnock ramped up the pressure in the second quarter taking advantage of the green card given against Jazlyn Sandhu By earning short corners but good defending from kelburne and vital saves from Lynne Houston kept the score even.

The 3rd quarter was run by kelburne starting with Emma Ryan having an off the post strong shot. Neve Simpson then won another short corner but giffnocks goalkeeper made the save. To end the quarter on a high Jazlyn Sandhu scored her second goal of the match. In the final quarter giffnock changed their formation but kelburne were able to absorb the increased pressure reacting with a strong counter Attack. Jen Morgan finished the game with a spectacular goal to seal their victory.

The ladies 2s hope to continue their running streak of victories with their match against ghk next weekend.

3 up for Upman but Ladies 1s downed by St Andrews

Kelburne Ladies 1s v St Andrews University Ladies 1s

15/10/2022 - 12:15pm

Kelburne L1s 3-8 St Andrews Uni L1s

Scorers: Simone Upman (3)

After a good win in the Scottish Cup on Thursday night, Kelburne Ladies 1s travelled to St Andrews looking to build upon their solid performance.

The first quarter saw a strong St Andrews team dominate with their speed and movement but Kelburne were strong in defence and saw some good periods of playing when working the ball in to the outside channels. St. Andrews looked to use their speed to their advantage and came away with four short corners which saw them take a two goal lead in the first quarter. The second quarter saw Kelburne fight back, winning three short corners, with Simone Upman continuing her fine run of goal scoring form to score the ladies first of the game. St Andrews regrouped themselves towards half time and some good play from the university team saw them come away from the D with another two goals to leave the score at half time 4-1 to the east coasters.

Kelburne looked to start the second half on the front foot with some lovely team play resulting in four short corners and another goal for Simone Upman after a strong pass from Ava Graham. St Andrews were reduced to 10 players, with a green card for aggressive play, early in the third quarter which allowed Kelburne to gain more attacking opportunities. The quarter was even until the last few minutes when St. Andrews got ahead of the Kelburne defence to score another goal. At the beginning of the fourth quarter Kelburne worked hard in defence and challenged St. Andrews in attack multiple times. Ava Graham drove into the D and won a penalty flick in which Simone Upman powered past the keeper to secure her hat trick. This left the score at 5-3 to the university and with the game coming to an end, Coach Colin McClure made the decision to go to 11 outfield players in order to press St Andrews and look to secure something form the game. St. Andrews challenged Kelburne, looking to take every opportunity to exploit the lack of keeper but it wasn’t to be for the brave Kelburne side, conceeding three goals, two of which were from short corners.

A determined performance from the young Kelburne side who remained driven and positive throughout the game and are eager to get back on the pitch with another university side being the opposition next weekend in the form of the University of Aberdeen.

Ladies 1s march on in the Scottish Cup!

Kelburne Ladies 1s v Waverley Inveresk Trinity Ladies 1s

13/10/2022 - 19:30pm

Kelburne L1s 4-3 WIT L1s

Scorers: Simone Upman, Jazlyn Sandhu, Lois Craig and Charley Austin

Kelburne ladies 1s made a strong start on Thursday night in their rearranged Scottish cup fixture.

Pressure was put on WIT immediately with the Kelburne midfield moving the ball nicely into space. This created the opportunity for Simone Upman to take her shot securing the first goal for Kelburne. This gave the girls some confidence and Jazlyn Sandhu was able to swiftly make it 2, from a strong deflection. WIT were quick to regather themselves and took their opportunities well, with a fast counter attack they pulled back 2 goals within the second quarter. Kelburne regrouped at halftime coming out determined and composed.

Good attacking play won Kelburne a penalty corner which was converted by Lois Craig on the post. WIT were persistent and took advantage of Kelburne being reduced to 10, as Upman received a 2 minute green. The pressure was too much for the Kelburne defence and WIT pulled back a 3rd goal. Upman returned to the field only to be sent from the field again on a yellow card. Kelburne maintained their position and focus and prevented any further advantage being taken by WIT. With full numbers again, Kelburne got into a good rhythm moving the ball quickly and with force across the pitch before winning another penalty corner. Charley Austin made it 4 with a strong reverse shot from the top of the circle. With not much time remaining WIT tried to regain themselves and create another opportunity but Kelburne stood strong till the final whistle ending the match at 4-3 to Kelburne.

Young Guns downed by EMS in District Cup

Kelburne Men’s 2s v Erskine Stewarts Melville Men’s 2s

9/10/2022 - 15:00pm

Kelburne M2s 2-3 ESM M2s

Scorers: Stephen Berry (2)

It was the Kelburne Mens 2s second game of the weekend, taking on Cup opponents Erskine Stewarts Melville in Edinburgh. With a few regulars missing Coach Caldwell had to put out a much changed team against a fresh ESM who had the Sat off which saw Coach Caldwell pulling on the shirt for his first game of the season.

It was a somewhat scrappy start which saw the Kelburne players adjust to different roles. Goalkeeper Ally Glen had to be vocal early on and did well organising the new look defence. In the second quarter, Kelburne finally got into the game as debutant Luke Palmer's direct run into the 23 caused panic in the ESM ranks. He managed to work the ball to JG Shepherd who smashed the ball into the top of the D for Stevie Berry who got ahead of his marker to deflect into the bottom right corner. 1-0 Kelburne.
The game ebbed and flowed thereafter and after a sustained period of pressure, ESM won a penalty corner. The shot was tame but somehow it managed to bounce into the goal past a static Kelburne defence to make it 1-1.

Uncharacteristically, the young Kelburne couldn't keep control of the ball and after another breakdown of play ESM broke forward. The attacker seemingly controlled the ball with his thigh but the referee waved play on and after an interchange the ball ended up in the goal. Despite the protests, the goal was given and it was 2-1 to ESM. This unsettled Kelburne and before halftime another loose pass saw ESM break into the D from the right. The shot was heading wide of goal but an onrushing striker managed to control it and proceeded to smash it into the goal to make it 3-1 to the hosts at half time.

Kelburne regrouped at half time but the second half started in a similar fashion with a loose pass leading to another penalty corner to ESM. Goalkeeper Ally Glen got a strong palm to it to make a brilliant save. That was finally the wake up call Kelburne needed and began fighting for every ball. A little too much for the umpires as a flurry of cards for both teams interrupted Kelburnes come back attempts. Martin Byrne saw green for a stick tackle followed soon after by JG Shepherd who harshly had his upgraded to yellow for pleading his defence with the umpire.

Soon after Kelburne got back to full strength, they began to look their dangerous best.

Martin Byrne broke from midfield and played a through ball to Coach Caldwell who played a quick one-two in the D with Adam Jack then with the goalkeeper to beat, unselfishly passed to the back post where a diving Berry slotted it in to the empty net.

It was all Kelburne for the remainder of the game as they tried everything to find the equaliser but the ball just wouldn't drop kindly for them in the D. Five failed penalty corner attempts summed up their luck on the day but they can take consolation that they will drop into the Plate Competition where they will be looking to go on a run into the latter stages.

Coach Caldwell said "It was disappointing to lose but we play them again on league duty after the October break and I'm looking forward see if we can learn from this game and continue our development."

Cup progress for the Men's 1s

Kelburne Men’s 1s v Monarchs Men’s 1s

9/10/2022 - 12:00pm

Kelburne M1s 5-3 Monarchs M1s

Scorers: Sam Hunt, Andrew McGrane (2), Jay Berry and Iain Scholefield

The game started with both teams working hard to put their mark on the game. Kelburne were controlling the tempo of the game and were slowly building up momentum with lots of possession in the last third of the pitch. Kelburne were given their first real chance when Miles Goldie took a quick free hit to run into the circle and win a short corner. Similar to the league fixture Sum Hunt stepped up and put a strong flick high into the Monarchs Goal.
Monarchs were continuing to play long balls down the pitch that were being mopped up by the Kelburne defence. Iain Scholefield led the next charge on the Monarch goal by making a direct run up the middle of the park where he played a fantastic pass onto Andrew McGrane who calmly reversed the ball through the Monarchs goalkeeper.
The rest of the quarter was well controlled with Sam Hunt and Rory Donaldson intercepting a lot of Monarchs long balls.

The second quarter had started slow with Kelburne not making the connections they were making in the first quarter. This meant Monarchs were starting to create chances. With Monarchs pushing Kelburne back into their own “D” it was just a matter of time before they would manage to convert. Monarchs managed to win their first corner after Kelburne were slow to set up and long ball from the back went straight into the Kelburne circle which was followed by a sloppy tackle. The ball was injected to top Circle were Boag manged to fire the ball top right into the net. Monarchs gained momentum from the goal and were continuing to push hard and were becoming more physical to try and equalize before halftime. Their opportunity came with a strike from top circle which Kelburne’s keeper Logan McClure manged to stretch low left to stop the shot. Scott Peters who controlled the rebound perfectly to turn out of trouble and clear the ball.

Half-time Kelburne 2 – Monarchs 1

The second half continued to be a battle for both teams trying to get the next goal. Monarchs were continuing to throw long aerials and long crash balls into the Kelburne half, but they weren’t managing to convert into chances on goal. Kelburne were starting to put together great phases of play which manged to create another short corner for them. This one went to Jay Berry who made the Monarchs keeper pull out a great save to push the ball wide. As the quarter started to develop more harder challenges were going in. It boiled over when Miles Goldie had an altercation with a Monarchs player which saw both receive a 10-minute yellow. Monarchs reacted better to playing with 10 men and started putting pressure on the Kelburne defence. The next opportunity came from a Monarchs short corner where Boag flicked the ball and McClure produced a top quality save high to his right to deny Monarchs equaliser. This was short lived as shortly after, Monarchs won another corner. This was a poor injection but was taken to left of the goal where a quick reverse was hammered into the bottom corner. Both teams got back to full strength just before the end of the quarter. The last quarter was fast paced with Kelburne creating majority of chances. The breakthrough came with Dylan Bradley stealing possession and attacking the “D”. Dylan pulled the keeper out and slid the ball underneath him for Jay Berry to deflect into the empty goal. This newfound momentum pushed Kelburne on to create another attack on the Monarch circle. Tommy Austin started the attack with great skill bringing him over the 25 where he found Berry in the “D” who manged to work it round the keeper for Andrew McGrane sliding in back post to score his second of the game. Monarchs were fighting to get back into the game but with great saves from McClure kept the momentum with Kelburne. Kelburne continued to push with a great move down the left side of the pitch that allowed Jay Berry to attack the circle. Unfortunately, he was fouled which led Kelburne to be given a penalty flick. Iain Scholefield stepped up and slotted the ball bottom left. This didn’t stop Monarchs as they continued to play balls into the Kelburne circle which they were rewarded with consolation goal.

Full time Kelburne 5- Monarchs 3

Overall, it was a very exciting game which was enjoyed by a great Kelburne support which the team are very thankful for.

Four in a row for the Men's 2s!

Kelburne Men’s 2s v Grange Men’s 3s

8/10/2022 - 12:20pm

Kelburne M2s 2-1 Grange M3s

Scorers: JG Shephard and Andrew Duff

The east end of Glasgow`s Theatre of Dreams, pitch 2 at Glasgow Green was the venue for Kelburne Men`s 2`s 4th game of the season.
Easter may be long gone and a distant memory to most, but there happens to be another `Resurrection` taking place and it`s based around a group of Kelburne players, who under coach Chris Caldwell are growing in self belief and confidence every week.
Under a cloudy, patchy blue sky and mild dry conditions, pitch 2 `almost` reminded you of the green, pristine lawns of the Masters golf course at Augusta, everything was perfect, the stage was set for both teams to go out and give their best. There was definitely a sense of anticipation stirring amongst the watching Kelburne supporters and a quick poll on the final score line came back with 3-1, 4-0 and 5-2 to Kelburne.
No pressure then!
The confidence from the supporters comes off the back of a very impressive win the previous week over Dunfermline Carnegie M2`s, but notably the make-up of the team has changed every week with Coach Chris Caldwell not able to pick the same squad twice since the start of the season.
The squad of 15 for today`s match is worth looking at in more detail in terms of its composition. Youth is taken care of in the shape of goal keeper Ally Glen 14, who in the first 2 matches of the season has been outstanding, making crucial saves at critical times to keep Kelburne`s chances alive. Next up Adam Jack 14, who is developing into a very skillful player with close ball control and an ability to go past defenders with ease. Next up Tom Hunt 14, defender, Team boy, budding journalist and for his age not short of confidence when playing under pressure at the back. Last, but certainly not least, player of the month Scott Love 15, whose is fast becoming one of the go to players who is driving this team to greater heights through his amazing work rate and good decision making. Scott`s dad Gordon Love, has we hear, put another order in for a new pair of trainers, as Scott is currently wearing out a pair a week with the amount of running that he does during games.

Youth has to be balanced with experience and this team has it in spades, even bucket loads and possibly by the proverbial dumper truck. In fact, they probably have too much experience.
Don Tervit, Adam Bain, Ewan Carmichael, John G Shepherd and Stevie Berry, have all been there done it and bought the t-shirt when it comes to playing at the highest levels of the game and although `old father time is snapping away at their heels` they continue to be great servants to Kelburne Hockey club,
With the likes of Martin Byrne, Gary Brolly, Mark Connor, Calum McAfferty, Calum Stewart and Andrew Duff coming back into the fold, all the ingredients are there to put together a recipe for a well-seasoned, balanced team that Gordon Ramsay would be effing proud off.
Grange 3`s turned up to todays match with a squad of 14 players and their team had a similar make-up to the Kelburne Squad, blending youth with experienced older players.
Get us back to the match you say… yep we are getting there, the build-up is everything in good story telling, I hope, here we go…..
Game on - First Quarter
The game started very `cagey` with Grange setting their stall out from the start and retreating to a half-press when Kelburne had the ball in possession in their own quarter. Perhaps these `cautious` tactics were the result of recent matches that Grange had lost and also `shipped` lots of goals.
This was something different for Kelburne to deal with, as in previous games they had not been given this amount of space and time on the ball at the back. The opposition half became `packed` with 11 Grange players sitting back and keeping space and opportunities for the Kelburne midfield and forward players to a minimum.
The slow pace to the start of the game, combined with the Grange tactics lead to some `nervous` play in the Kelburne ranks and both teams struggled to retain possession and generate any good passages of play to take control of the match in the early stages.
Grange continued to play `low risk` hockey with little or no desire to put bodies forward into the Kelburne D in numbers. The ambition to play on the front foot and attack was all coming from Kelburne and it was not long before a long pass into the Grange D led to a trademark, touch, quick turn and lightning snap shot from Andrew Duff which went wide and high of the Grange goal. This was surely an alert to all of those watching of more chances to follow for Kelburne.
Adam Bain started to influence the game more (as all the best players do) by playing longer accurate passes with high ball pace, to bypass the compact Grange front line defence, to link up with the Kelburne forwards who were working hard to make good leads into space off their markers.
With little action of note from either team the first quarter ended with umpire Dougie McEwan checking with his co-umpire Raymond Nelson that the first quarter had indeed ended due to what appeared to be a watch malfunction. Later confirmed by Dougie McEwan as an 18 minute and a bit, or there abouts quarter.
Nil-Nil end of 1st quarter, suffice to say the Kelburne support were hoping for more action in the Grange D in the second quarter.
Second Quarter
Grange have the push-back, and with the Kelburne players ears still hot from the 2 minute opportunity that coach Chris Caldwell had to relay his thoughts. There was an immediate impact on the pitch from Martin Byrne whose quick reactions enabled him to intercept a poor pass from the Grange player and make a fast break from the half way line into the Grange D and get a reverse stick shot off which was well blocked by a Grange defender.
Grange continued to lack ambition going forwards and struggled with making any headway into the Kelburne half. None of their midfield appeared to be able to match the work rate from Ewan Carmichael and Scott Love, with both showing a great desire to receive the ball and link up play with their team mates.
Another excellent long ball into the Grange D was picked up by Scott Love who cleverly draws a stick tackle from a Grange defender to win a penalty corner for Kelburne. Scott then fluffs the push out but makes up for his initial error by shortly after winning the ball back and Kelburne have their 2nd penalty corner. J G Shepherd manages to get a powerful strike off from the top of the D from the corner but the Grange keeper makes a good block and a long corner is awarded by Raymond Nelson, but again nothing comes from it for Kelburne.
Adam Bain`s experience and game management were now really coming to the fore, and Kelburne were starting to dominate the game, particularly through their greater work rate.
Great interplay in the middle of the pitch between Scott and Tom ends with a pass into the Grange D for forward Stevie Berry to attack but is snuffed out by the tight Grange defence.
Kelburne continue to press forward with this time Duff and J.G. combining in mid-field allowing J.G. to make a strong driving run into the Grange D to win penalty corner number 3, but Grange defend it well again and the Umpire Dougie McEwan blows his whistle to end the first half, this time with no apparent watch malfunctions.
Kelburne will be very frustrated with the 1st half and coach Chris Caldwell would have wanted his team to have made the Grange goal keeper work a lot harder for his `corn`.
Meanwhile goal keeper Ally Glen has had his feet up smoking a pipe while enjoying a small brandy and re-runs on his mobile phone of the greatest St. Mirren goals ever scored, as Grange have had no attempts on goal in the whole of the 1st half.
As the old saying goes it looks like it could be a game of 2 halves or maybe 4 quarters. Its all to play for, but at the moment it only looks like one team wants to win it, but it could still go either way, time will tell. Have I missed any standard quotes ?
Will coach Chris Caldwell take the opportunity at half time to changes things up or leave it as it is and see if his team can continue to create chances to get the goal that they deserve.
2nd Half
Kelburne have the push back and make a quick start with another Adam Bain pass finding Martin Byrne in the Grange D who wins penalty corner number 4. This time Mark Connor takes the push out but also `duffs` it, but Kelburne somehow manage to win another penalty corner, number 5.
This time Adam Bain takes on the role of pushing the ball out for the penalty corner and the ball is fizzed off his stick like a rat down a drain pipe to J.G. who decides to stop the ball himself and fire a magnificently struck shot beyond the Grange goal keeper and into the backboard of the goal. The noise of the ball hitting the backboard reverberates around the Glasgow Green Scottish National Hockey centre and the Kelburne fans erupt in celebration. Finally Kelburne get the goal that their sustained attacking play deserves.
He may not be 6 feet 4 inches tall, or blond, or have a Norwegian name but J.G.`s scoring rate to the start of the season so far is phenomenal. Game 1 2 goals, Game 2 1 goal, Game 3 1 goal and here we are again with another fantastic strike to add to his tally and put Kelburne into the lead.
The goal appears to raise the temperature in both teams and all of a sudden tackles start to fly in, the physicality goes up and the games intensity goes up several notches. Game on.
Kelburne win corner number 6 after a sustained high press and it looks like Grange might start to buckle, but this the drag flick from Martin Byrne is dealt with by the Grange defence.
The older Grange players start to make too many poor challenges on the Kelburne players and it appears that it`s only a matter of time before Kelburne add another precious goal to their collection.
Further pressure leads to penalty corner number 7, with Grange yet to have any. Adam again pushes out with great technique to Tom to stop and lay off for Stevie Berry to get a good shot off which Grange somehow manage to deflect over the bar.
Deliberate foul by a Grange player in their 25 gets an award of a nice bright green rectangular card with round edges from umpire Dougie McEwan. Grange down to 10 players. Surely Kelburne can now kill this game off.
All of a sudden there`s a `stramash` a `rammy` a `bunnel in` a coming together between a Kelburne and Grange player in the Grange D, several players from both sides get involved but umpire Dougie McEwan quickly gets control of the game back and speaks to the captains of both teams. Final Warning to all. Kelburne through all this have been awarded penalty corner number 8.
Grange now on the ropes, Henry Cooper once caught Ali with one of his legendary left hooks, and Ali only survived the round by having the excuse of a cut glove. Can Grange find that cut glove or something to save them now.
Penalty corner number 8 but nothings comes of it for Kelburne. The end of the 3rd quarter finishes with the Kelburne youngsters Hunt, Jack and Love working together well with some intricate short passing and movement through a group of Grange players. Whistle blows and one quarter left to play. Still only 1-0 Kelburne, but Grange while it stays one nil still have a `punchers` chance to get back into this game. Can Kelburne finally close this game out, will this match report ever end…..
4th Quarter
Grange have the push back.
Grange finally get into the Kelburne 25 for the 1st time since, well a long time, a very long time, but it peters out and Kelburne get the ball quickly up the right hand side of the pitch, which leads to a free hit in the Grange 25. Quick thinking from Kelburne and a tiring, mentally and physically Grange player is not 5 metres and umpire Dougie McEwan awards the penalty corner number 9 to the Kelburne team. Another great flick from Martin Byrne from the corner but the goal keeper saves and the second goal for Kelburne is proving as elusive as finding Lord Lucan.
Adam Bain, Mark Connor and club legend Don Tervit appear to have had a `vice like` grip on this match from the Kelburne defensive point of view and it looks like Grange could play all day and all night and never win a corner.
Next passage of play and Grange have their first penalty corner of the match and score. Kelburne 1 Grange 1.
The watching Kelburne support all groan in disbelief, but their still time left in this match, can Kelburne now lift themselves again and show the character that has been present in their first 3 matches of the season.
Absolutely…
With the game now on a knife edge another accurate long pass from Adam Bain up to Andrew Duff who in turn finds Stevie Berry in the D who wins penalty corner number 10. J.G. produces another great strike but the ball goes wide of the goal.
The game is now end to end and the Grange tails are up, they must feel that they can still win this match. Meanwhile the Kelburne supporters have finished chewing the nails on their fingers and have started chewing on any other body parts available.
After some pressure from Grange Adam Bain takes charge again and fires the ball down the length of the pitch high into the side line to relieve the pressure on the Kelburne defence and calls on the rest of the team to press high up the pitch and `squeeze` the Grange team into the corner.
Martin Byrne steps off from the Grange player taking the side line hit, the requisite 5m. The Grange player tries to relieve the pressure on his team by going a high long scoop out from the side line. As the ball rises off the Grange players stick Martin makes a huge leap upwards like Michael Jordan rising to make one of his famous dunks, and stops the ball in the air with his raised stick. Martin makes the decision in nanoseconds to play the ball into the Grange D to find the ever reliable Duff who wrong foots the Grange defender by changing the direction of the ball with his first touch to set up the ball such that he can hit it with a reverse strike and the ball, almost in slow motion for the Kelburne supporters, flies into the bottom right corner of the goal with the Grange goal keeper left looking at the rebound of the ball on the way back out. A thing of simplicity, beauty and skill hone by many hours and hours of practice, what a goal. 2-1 the Kelburne.
Grange to their credit still trying to get back into the game and apply further pressure to the Kelburne defence, but the wily J.G. takes a hit to knee and takes his time getting back to his feet, play stopped and the last blast of hot air from Grange fades into the ether.
Whistle blows for full time, another hard fought and thoroughly well deserved 3 point for the Kelburne Men 2`s side.
Special mention to both Umpires Dougie McEwan and Raymond Nelson, two old heads who umpired the game very well and kept the game flowing.
Final Words fromm Coach Chris Caldwell after the game on his teams performance.
`Boys battled through some tough periods of the game, not their best performance we done enough to win the game.

Encouraging to see the u16 players control the 2nd half and we are now looking forward to tomorrows cup math in Edinburgh against ESM. Chris Caldwell may not yet have a sheepskin jacket or work his way through a weeks supply of chewing gum during a game but his influence on this team is shining through for all to see.
MOTM Adam Bain
Most dangerous time for any player, the WARM UP, just ask Gary Brolly.

Goals Galore for the Ladies 2s

Kelburne Ladies 2s v Glasgow Accies Ladies 2s

8/10/2022 - 4:20pm

Kelburne L2s 4-0 Glasgow Accies

Scorers: Jen Morgan, Jen Owen (2) and Jazzlyn Sandhu

With a 4:20pm push back on Saturday 8th October, kelburne ladies 2s looked to make it two out of two this season against Glasgow accies 2s. It was the girls first match back after a few weeks off, and they proved the break hadn’t stopped their momentum!

As the match got underway, the players made their intentions of a win very clear. The midfield worked hard to apply pressure to the opposition and maintained this high intensity throughout the first half. The dynamic movement of the players was causing Accies problems, and the first chance fell to Jen Owen who struck a shot that was well saved by the Accies keeper. Kelburne continued to pass the ball well and a well worked move saw Jen Morgan open the scoring. With the first goal under their belts the girls were hungry for more, and Jen Owen doubled the score with a well placed finish. Kelburne continued to make the play and Alice Ferguson struck an impressive shot on target from just inside the D, but it wasn’t meant to be as the shot was parried away by the accies goalkeeper. With Kelburne now well in control the whistle sounded for half time.

The game resumed after half time with excellent interchanges between midfielders Esther Walker, Jazzlyn Sandhu , and defender Bella Martin. This ensured the ball was played up the line more often and gained the girls territory as they looked for the killer goal. After a period of sustained pressure Jen Owen scored a great goal from an Alice Ferguson centre, that made the scoreline 3-0. Quickly after, skillful play from Jazzlyn Sandhu earned the midfielder yet another goal for kelburne. Accies raised the pressure trying to steal a goal before full time, but it just wasn’t their day.

The girls look to continue their streak next week against Giffnock.

The ball keeps rolling for the Men's 2s

Kelburne Men’s 2s v Dunfermline Carnegie Men’s 2s

1/10/2022 - 12:00pm

Kelburne M2s 3-2 Dunfermline Carnegie

Scorers: JG Shephard and Andrew McGrane (2)

Coach Chris Caldwell took his Kelburne Men's 2XI side away to Dunfermline Carnegie on Saturday. The now close knit and ever developing squad was in high spirits after the previous weekend's superb 3-1 win over Watsonians. Coach Caldwell asked for the team to continue their progression in performance with another controlled display, which would be vital if any points were to be taken.

The first quarter saw the home side apply pressure to Kelburne from the start, opting to try crash balls into the 'D' from the right hand side, with the visitors struggling to make the ball stick higher up the pitch. This resulted in a few short corners being conceded. However, the Kelburne defensive team were determined not to concede from these corners, which was a theme that would continue throughout the match.

Eventually however, after starting to come into the game, Kelburne took the lead in the 2nd quarter, through a well worked short corner of their own. A strong and accurate injection from player of the month Scott Love coming out to JG Shepherd, who used his experience and composure to calmly strike the ball inside the Keeper's right hand post. The teams then went over for their half time chat, with the coach asking for more from the players. Saying that if they wanted to get anything from the game, which was now being played in periods of heavy rain showers and wind, they would need to suffer together when necessary and earn the result.

Into the 3rd quarter, the score was levelled after Carnegie enjoyed a good spell in the game and broke down the stubborn 'Burne defence. A more balanced game continued, with both teams having chances and breaking down play well when required. With both teams feeling that the points were there to be won, the visitors pushed forward again in the relentless rain and managed to score a 2nd goal after a some brilliant counter attacking hockey to go 2-1 ahead through promising youngster Andrew McGrane.

Some sloppy turnovers from Kelburne then allowed Carnegie to yet again score an equaliser. With all to play for, the home side adjusted their system and pushed for a winner. The determined Kelburne short corner defensive team were again called into action multiple times in the 4th quarter. They managed to shut the offensive team out with some fantastic saves from Goalkeeper Lewis Berry who was protected and supported from his backline.

With the match looking to finish 2-2, the in form Martin Byrne managed to take instruction from the ever present veteran midfielder and captain Ewan Carmichael to block a Carnegie attack. This set Kelburne on a dangerous counter, ending with the ball in the net. Andrew McGrane sealing a brace of goals for the day, earning his side a well deserved victory and 3 points to take back to Paisley.

Next weekend, Kelburne Men's 2XI host Grange 3XI on Saturday at 12:20pm at Glasgow Green. Which promises to be another battle for vital points in the league. The following day, they travel to East Fettes for a 3pm push back to take on ESM in the cup.
