Hillhead 6th Xi 1 ? 4 Kelburne 5th XI
The gents 5?s have had a season of mixed fortunes and Saturday?s
game was no different , with the weather taking control of the
situation and some of the Kelburne Youngsters in Danger of frostbite as
the wind drove the sleet and rain across the pitch. With Terry Morgan
John Ferguson and Alan Bryce already missing there was confusion in the
ranks when it was discovered that Steve Bain was also absent and this
meant that Jeff Cairns , Euan Crawford , Willie Allan and Donald
Campbell were the Experienced players that were going to have to be
relied upon together with some support from Josh Cairns , Alan Forsyth
and Jon Rooney who were looking for a run out before their U18 Cup Final
on the Sunday . The early pressure was however all on the Kelburne
defence as Hillhead refused to give the Kelburne team time to settle
and with the early play disjointed the outlook was as overcast as the
weather .Fortunately the youngsters Lee Morton, Ryan Edgar and Ross
Lee with the lively support of Willie Allen and the ever improving
Ross Middleton along with the other youngster Miles Godie were
playing some great hockey and managing to take the game to Hillhead and
even forced two penalty corners prior to half time ,but the usually
reliable Jeff Cairns was unable to convert the chances into goals and
it was left to the mercurial David Forsyth to waltz past 5 defenders and
leave the Hillhead goalkeeper helpless with a great finish in the
corner . Hillhead responded immediately and scored an excellent goal
from their first Penalty Corner of the game , but Kelburne hit back just
on half time when amid confusion in the Hillhead defence Mark Connor
nipped in and restored Kelburnes lead.
The second half began with Kelburne forcing Hillhead back on the defensive and they really should have taken advantage of some of the chances created by the strong running of Willie Allan combined with the inter passing of Ryan Edgar ,Ross Lee and Jason Cairns .
Both teams exchanged chances but it was Josh Cairns who took control and completed the scoring with two excellent strikes from well worked Penalty Corners to put Kelburne three up .This caused Hillhead to storm back into the game but in the end Kelburne were happy to hold on to their three goal advantage with young Greig Cunningham coming to the rescue with some excellent goalkeeping .
The 5?s find themselves climbing out of the bottom half of the league as the end of the season approaches and can look back at some excellent performances from the youngsters many of whom will be moving up the teams next year.
No doubt the veterans will all be back looking for a game at Bellahouston this week as the 5?s take on Hillhead 5?s to try to stop them winning the League.
