Kelburne 3rd XI (9) vs Erskine Stuarts Mellville (2)
Being grateful for not having this game called off due to snow, the 3rd XI was keen to correct the errors made on Saturday against Ayr and return to the standard of previous games.
The first fifteen minutes of the game passed with neither side breaking the deadlock, despite a number of good chances for Kelburne. The opening goal came from veteran David Magee, who drew the keeper off the line and lifted the ball over him from the left hand side of the ?D?. This goal was made more entertaining by the futile effort of one of the opposing defenders trying to stop the ball going in and instead falling into the goal and knocking it over. The second goal came shortly after, when a deflected shot was put in by Jimmy McCrae after some deft passing between MJ and Chris ?The Legend? McNulty. Some good passing out of defence allowed the ball to be moved down the left hand side to find Alan Kennedy unmarked in the ?D? who, with a clean strike to the bottom left corner rounded off Kelburne?s action in the first half. Mellville?s first and only goal of the first half came from a free hit just outside the ?D? managing to find an unmarked attacker at the back post who flicked it into the goal.
After yet another inspiring half time talk from Jeff Cairns, Kelburne stepped up the pressure and it wasn?t long before Gary Ramsay found David Magee at the back post from a free hit to put the score at 4-1. The seasons top scorer added another two to his tally within 5 minutes the first of which was a flick over the keeper at the near post. The second of which was an exhibition of skill as he dribbled past 3 defenders and then around the keeper before calmly putting it in the goal. Mellville managed to pull another goal back to make the score 6-2 before their lack of fitness and shape left large gaps, allowing Gary Ramsay to make a long run out of the Kelburne half and providing a 3 on 1 situation with the keeper for a simple slip left to McNulty and an easy finish. Jimmy McCrae added Kelburne?s 8th goal of the game, but not before Jeff Cairns deflected a drag flick off the line from one of Mellville?s few short corners. With the last touch of the game, a pass from Jimmy McCrae found MJ unmarked in the ?D? who deflected the pass into the goal to finish off a good all round performance. Credit to must also go to the younger members of the team: Simon Urie, Ryan Edgar, Craig Morton and Gary Ramsay, who all put in solid performances.
