Congratulations to Kelburne Director of Hockey and 1st XI Coach Derek Forsyth who has been appointed assistant coach to the Senior Mens squad as they seek a place at next years World Cup.
The squad that will include many of the Kelburne 1st XI squad head off to Invercargill in New Zealand for the World Cup Qualifier in November, where they will face the host nation, Malaysia, China, Austria and Wales, it will be a big ask for Scotland to qualify as only one team will progress to India next year.
Below is Press Statement from the SHU issued 03/09/09
RUSSELL Garcia, a former Great Britain Olympian and Scotland under 21 coach, has now been given the position of temporary coach to the senior squad following the resignation of Jon Royce.
Royce tendered his resignation after Scotland's failure to gain promotion from the European Nations Trophy in Wrexham two months ago. But by achieving fifth spot, the Scots claimed the last place in the Hero Honda World Cup qualifier in Invercargill (New Zealand) in November.
Garcia said: "I'm happy to be taking on this role and I'm taking a long-term view on it by giving younger players the chance. As well as trying to qualify for the World Cup, it'll be a stepping stone for the next Europeans in 2011 and the Commonwealth Games in 2010 and 2014."
Garcia steps up for the qualifier only, with the post of senior coach being formally advertised after Invercargill. Garcia will have Azzurri Kelburne coach Derek Forsyth as his assistant.
Forsyth held on to fifth place for the Scots under-21 side for several years and took the youngsters to the 1993 Junior World Cup for the first time, finishing a creditable tenth.
