Western Win against Women's 1s

Western (A) - Sat 24 Oct

Western 5
Kelburne 0

Final score 5-0       (half time 1-0)

On a misearable saturday afternoon at bellahouston, with a scoreline that flattered the oppostion, nothing could brighten the spirits of the 1 XI as they were defeated 5 goals to nil by their nemesis western.

The game got off to a nervy start with western pressing early and deep into the the kelburne defence. Western took some early shots narrowly missing the target. However it wasn't long before western received the first of many penalty corners and it was their third one lucky that saw the ball go pelting past the defence and into the goal, making the score 1-0. This was to remain the score for the rest of the half, however if it were not for the outstanding performance of keeper Kath Rae and the corner defence team this scoreline may well have been considerably higher. In saying that, kelburne were not without their chances, good build up play from the youngsters in the team put pressure on the western defence, but in good old kelburne tradition, the ball did not see the back of the net. First half ending in 1-0.

With high hopes for the second and half and the score only 1-0, the kelburne side could still see a win within their grasp. Despite an early goal from western again from a penalty corner, kelburne seemed undeterred and continued to work hard. With the score standing at 2-0, western were awarded a penalty flick however, keeper Kath Rae continued her excellent form by making yet another fantastic save. Kelburne took confidence from this and the game continued with both teams having equal pressure and opoortunities to score.

It wasn't until the last 10 minutes of the game that kelburne saw their hopes of a win dashed, as western made it 3-0 from a fast break leaving the kelburne keeper without a chance. The onslaught continued with western scoring just 5 minutes later. Kelburnes confidence was shaken and it was with perhaps a lack of concentration in the team (or maybe the disbelief on how western were so dignified in their celebration of the goals) that allowed the final goal into the back of the net.

A very disappointing result for the ladies 1XI and not a true reflection of the good performance of many players in the team.
