Ladies draw in Rome

Kelburne Ladies earned a point from their first match in the European Club Hockey Trophy in Rome.

Making their European debut as a club the Ladies faced Irish side Loreto in their tough opening fixture.

Loreto took an early lead but the Burne responded when internationalist Katy Mckay swept home the equaliser from a short corner routine.

Both teams pressed for a winner and fellow internationalist Laura Wrightson put Kelburne ahead when a move involving Adele Desty and Katy McKay resulted in Laura sweeping the ball home at the back post.

Cath Rae kept Loreto out until near the end of the match when she was finally beaten by a penalty stroke.

Kelburne can take heart from this fine start and now look forward to playing Russian side Izmaylova Moscow in todays crunch encounter, a win in this match will give the Kelburne Ladies a shot at a medal in Sundays play off match.
