Greenock Ladies: 5
Kelburne Ladies 3s: 0
Inverclyde Academy, Saturday 18th September
Sometimes, the score line does not tell the whole story. This was one of those times!
This week's Kelburne squad consisted of only 3 adults, with the remainder of the team aged between 11 and 14. Away fixtures are always a challenge when most of the squad play school hockey in the morning, and the 1:30pm pass-back in far-far-away Greenock proved to be Kelburne's undoing on this occasion. Kelburne's chances of success took a further knock by this week's goalkeeper shortage, thanks to a bizarre weightlifting related incident...
Kelburne, captained by Abi Reilly, were forced to start the game with only 9 players, as Briony Coyle, Hayley Skimming and Ellie Halliday were still in transit from their morning games. By the time they arrived, 20 minutes into the first half, Greenock had already put 5 goals past Kelburne's hapless stand-in keeper (who shall remain nameless to spare her blushes). However, once the cavalry had arrived, the Kelburne girls were able to shrug off their disastrous start. The second half was a tightly-fought battle, with several chances at both ends, and Kelburne were very unlucky not to pull a couple of goals back. The game finished 5:0 to Greenock, but the game would have been very different story had Kelburne been able to field 11 players, including a goalkeeper, from the start.
Once again, the inspirational Kelburne youngsters were able to take everything that was thrown at them, and never once looked like giving up - even when it seemed like all circumstances were against them. Beautiful passing moves, silky skills and a team spirit that gets stronger every week - possibly the most exciting group of youngsters Kelburne Ladies have ever known. The girls have a week off before taking on Western Wildcats in the cup - lets hope they get the result their efforts deserve!
