Queensland won the tournament last year and are favourites for this year's event. Our team was looking forward to the tussle against a fairly physical, competitive side. It began well with a brilliantly worked field goal finished off by Ian Littlefair. We didn't sit back but continued to press up the right side and put the Queensland circle under pressure. Geoff McNeill slapped a hard shot into the D and Bob Le Merle finished it off by smashing a knee-high deflection into the goal. Two-nil up against the favourites!
Still in the first half, more pressure resulted in our first short corner, but both main strikers were off the pitch. Up stepped Alan Bryce to stop and hit a beautifully worked goal right of centre. Pinch me someone. Three-nil up against the champions and still 45 minutes to go. A combination of substitution disruption and Queensland's injured pride pushing them to even greater efforts meant the balance of the game changed. They clawed back a very scrappy goal with 10 minutes of the first half left and then caught the disrupted defence with another slick passing move to score another. Half-time saw us 3-2 up.
Second half was backs to wall time with the occasional foray upfield. This eventually resulted in a very late third Queensland goal - about 1 minute left. We were disappointed not to have won, but were pleased to have taken a point from Queensland. It all depends now on the games tomorrow (0830 start) to decide who goes through to the playoffs on Friday.
