Tense match ends in penalty defeat for unlucky 4th XI

Kelburne 4XI  2 - 2  Clydesdale 4XI  (Clydesdale win 5-4 on penalties)

Saturday  the 4XI host Clydesdale 4XI in the first Scottish Reserve Cup clash of the season.

The match began at a pretty high tempo and it was clear from the start that this was not going to be an easy game with both team?s really up for it. Both teams were passing the ball around well and for the first fifteen minutes the game was pretty much even, that is until John Fergusson hit a terrific shot which flew past the keeper and rattled the backboard of the goal, 1-0 Kelburne !

Kelburne then looked to build on their good start with a second and changed things about by bringing Callum Blair, Jak O'Connell and Ross Lee into the game. However, Clydesdale where not going to lie down that easily and within the space of a couple of minutes they scored an equaliser which was quickly followed by a second to give them a 2-1 lead.

Kelburne did not let their heads go down and showed great strength of character to get themselves back into the game with some slick passing moves and excellent bursting runs from midfield. Just before half time Kelburne were awarded a short corner. The ball fell to one of  Kelburne 4?s top scorer?s, Mark Fulton, who after a great first touch fired the ball into the bottom left corner of the goal and out of the keeper?s reach, 2-2, game on !!

The second half begun with all to play for, both Kelburne and Clydesdale had a number of chances to score but neither team managed to capitalise. A great defensive display from Jimmy Currie, Ritchie Morgan and the Kelburne defence as well as keeper Danny Craig kept Clydesdale at bay but despite some great link up play between Willie Allan and the forwards, Kelburne were unable to convert any of their chances in the latter stages in the match.

The game finished 2-2, this match would be decided on penalties. Jimmy, John, Willie, Fulton and Steven Robbie were the five who were brave enough to volunteer to step up and take a penalty flick.

Jimmy led by example scoring his penalty with ease. John and Fulton then followed up with two great penalties. Steven was next but was extremely unlucky when he slipped his penalty flick a fraction wide of the post. Fortunately and much to the team's relief Clydesdale also missed their penalty. Despite this Willie was also unlucky after the Clydesdale keeper guessed the right way to save his penalty. It looked all but over as the Clydesdale player stepped up to take the penalty which could win his team the match, he went straight down the middle but Danny guessed right and through some odd but effective goal keeping (trapping the ball between his legs!) kept us in it!.

The cycle began again with the same five taking a second set of penalties. Clydesdale took the first penalty this time. The player showed great skill by putting his flick in the top right hand corner. Fulton was next up to the spot .but unfortunately a fine save from the Clydesdale keeper prevented him converting it. Hard lines for Kelburne, but high drama at the Belladrome !!!

The 4's return to league action next Saturday 30th October in an inter-club grudge match v the 3XI at Bellahouston.
