Kelburne prepared for this matchmissing 2 regulars (Ewan Carmichael and Craig Morton), but still managed to field a strong line up. The match?s pattern was established in the first few minutes with Kelburne exerting heavy pressure on a competent Inverleith defence with no sign of a breakthrough. Rather against the run of play after 10 minutes an Inverleith forward latched on a long ball out of defence and outstripped a surprised Kelburne defence to which in the end conceded a short corner which the Inverleith striker managed to pass into the back of the goal. The first half continued with Kelburne spurning several good chances to equalise. Miles Goldie?s good looks were threatened when a ricochet hit him on the cheekbone and ended his participation in the game. Before half time another breakaway by Inverleith allowed them to go another goal in front.
Half time Kelburne 0-2 Inverleith
The second half started with a much changed Kelburne set up as the team looked to turn over the 2-0 deficit. However, before they could get into their stride Inverleith struck with a third goal when their umpire failed to award a free hit to Kelburne when the ball hit an Inverleith?s forward?s foot. Inverleith goalkeeper was having a good game and despite constant Kelburne pressure Inverleith looked the more likely to score on their dangerous breakaways. Only some last minute interceptions from the reorganised defence and a smart save from Mark ?Robbo" Robertson prevented Kelburne going further behind. With 20 minutes to go Kelburne appeared to up their pace and were at last rewarded with 3 goals from Fraser Hutchison, Colin Bryce and an excellent solo effort from Harry Godfrey against the loss of another disputed goal and fought back to 3-4. Unfortunately, their all out attack left them open at the back and Inverleith added a fifth goal. The small, but vocal home support was not impressed by the Inverleith umpire, who gave cards both to skipper Fraser Scott and Gordon ? Beast? Menzies in the last few minutes, and congratulated him near the end of the game on his 3 second half assists.
Final score Kelburne 3- Inverleith 5
A bad day for the league leaders who will need to take more of their chances in future if they are to stay at the top.
