Kelburne 5th XI 0 - 0 Greenock II XI
Kelburne 5th XI development squad travelled to Greenock to take on their county rivals in a West District Division 2 league match.
Match started with Greenock pressing the Kelburne rearguard, but they were well marshalled by Donald Campbell and Ewan Crawford in the central positions.
After the early onslaught Kelburne then came into the match, with skipper Willie Allan leading from the front his tireless running gave the Greenock midfield no time to settle. Lucas Farndale and Martin Byrne in the wide midfield roles started to press their Greenock rivals and both Ian Kerr and Martin Byrne came close to opening the scoring.
Young Aidan Fitzgerald entered the fray and it was plain to see from his initial touches that he is definitely one for the future.
The first half ended goaless.
The second half started with Kelburne doing the pressing and putting the Greenock rearguard under pressure with Sandy Sneddon, Grant Toghill and jack Jamieson all playing their part in Kelburnes dominance at this point.
Kelburne were then down to 10 men when veteran Duncan McInnes received a yellow card for a clumsy challenge in the Greenock "D".
Even though they were down to 10 men for 5 minutes the Kelburne youngsters stood tall and absorbed all the Greenock pressure.
When Kelburne got back to 11 men they forced a series of penalty corners that both Donald Campbell and Willie Allan came close with the Greenock keeper pulling off a series of top class saves to prevent Kelburne scoring, though Aidan Fitzgerald thought he had opened the scoring when it looked like he had bundled the ball over the line only for the umpire to wave play on.
As the young Kelburne side started to tire David Ogilvie pulled off a number of fantastic saves to keep his goal intact and the one time he failed to clear his lines Ronnie McGuire slid in to make a goal line clearance.
The match ended 0 - 0, this was a huge improvement in performance from the previous weeks and 12 Year Old Ed McGuire took the plaudits for his very mature performance on the right hand side of Kelburnes defence.
Every one of the team made a contribution and skipper Willie Allan was well pleased with the performance.
No game this week for the 5th XI and their next match will be on the 29th.
I just wanted to thank Suzie Fitzgerald for umpiring this match at short notice and umpiring it so well.
