5th XI defeat Glasgow Students

Kelburne 5 XI 2-1 Glasgow University II XI

The return of Ewan Crawford, Steve Bain and Ian Kerr was welcomed by the Kelburne 5's for a match that everyone knew was going to be a tough challenge against the ever fit, physical Glasgow University II's at Bellahouston on Saturday afternoon.

On the back of two disappointing results, player coach Steve Bain was keen to contain the University with his squad which contained eight schoolboys.

Despite dominating most of the play in the first ten minutes, Kelburne were unlucky to loose a goal in the twelfth minute. Skipper Willie Allan led from the front in the reply with his usual tireless effort, supported in a midfield by combinations of Lucas Farndale, Donald Campbell, Ian Kerr and Martin Byrne, and was rewarded with a goal from a penalty corner after twenty one minutes.

The back four of Steve Bain, Ewan Crawford, and father and son duo, Ronnie and Ed McGuire were subjected to a fierce onslaught of pressure just before half time with keeper David Ogilvie pulling off a number of top class saves.

Half time 1-1

Kelburne continued to do everything to contain the opposition in the second half with everyone playing their part. Grant Toghill won his side a penalty flick in the 16th minute of the second half following a superb run into the D.

Steve Bain stepped up and slotted a classy penalty flick past the helpless keeper.

The game finished with end to end play, forwards Grant, Sandy Sneddon, and youngsters Aiden Fitzgerald and Jack Jamieson working their socks off against opposition defenders who, in Aiden and Jacks case, were at least one and a half times taller than them.

Coach Steve Bain applauded everyones supreme effort in beating a very challenging side. This excellent win moves Kelburne up to 4th in division 2 and they look forward to their next challenge against Western 5's next Saturday hoping that Ian's mum will let him play again.
