The first game of the New Year for the Ladies III's saw a nice mix of youth and experience take to the pitch with Jen Morgan offering coaching support and guidance from the sidelines. Jen Owen led her team out keen to win crucial points to avoid the relegation zone. The girls started a bit hesitantly, taking time to get into their stride after the Festive break. Early play was fairly even seeing Kelburne win a short corner at one end and quickly requiring Ailidh Fleming to make a save and Lynn whipping a shot out of play to prevent Giffnock taking advantage of a scoring opportunity. The Kelburne girls quickly picked up the ball and pushed forward with some nice passing ending with Emma Ryan scoring her first of the day. Buoyed by taking the lead the Kelburne girls got into their stride stringing some nice passes together resulting in shots on goal from Ellise Berry, Rachael Ewing and Christine McCrimmon - only a good save from the Giffnock goalie kept Christine's out of the net. Unfortunatel a lapse in concentration by the Kelburne defense saw Giffnock sneak in an equaliser just before the break.
Half-time - Kelburne III's 1 - Giffnock III's 1
Following a tactical team talk by Jen Morgan at half-time the girls were fired with enthusiam and started strongly with some good attacking play. The first goal of the second half came from a reverse hit by Rachael Ewing which screamed past the goalie and into the back of the net. This was quickly followed by goals from Christine and a second for Miss Ryan.
Giffnock responded to this early onslaught by pushing forward earning 2 short corners in quick succession, Ailllidh saved the first and Lynn Houston managed to clear the second off the line but Giffnock persevered and managed to push the rebound over the line. It was Giffnock's turn to take the reigns and Aillidh had to pull off a string of saves to prevent Giffnock increasing their tally.
Kelburne responded with some nice passing from Ellie Halliday and Hayley Skimming leading to a shot on goal by Rachael. This period of Kelburne pressure saw a short corner being won then Christine making the dominance count with her second and Kelburne's 5th goal of the day.
Giffnock retaliated quickly and scored on the break to make the score 5 - 3. The Kelburne girls weren't going to sit back and settle for this result and continued to press for more goals. Christine was seen sprinting into the Giffnock half to reach a long pass and with only one defender and the goalie to beat she was disappointed to loose the ball (and the chance of a hattrick) in a strong tackle from the Giffnock player. Some nice play down the left saw Drew Berry making a pass to Bethany Allan who dribbled into the D and pushed the ball towards the goal - the ball went into the net making the score a heady 6 - 3 to Kelburne, leaving Ellise and Bethany to argue about who had the final touch on the ball. The consensus of the excited crowd was that Bethany scored - sorry Ellise!
The pace of the match didn't relent as both teams continued to push for more goals. Jen Owen, keen to get on the score sheet, pushed forward and whipped a 7th goal into the back of the net. Giffnock didn't give up and were awarde a short corner just before the final whistle blew, the Kelburne defence quickly cleared the ball out of the D to end the match.
A much needed and well deserved victory girls, keep up the good work.
