Rottenrow 1XI ? Kelburne 5XI
It was with a significant degree of trepidation that the Kelburne Fives Squad left the clubhouse on their way to face league champions Rottenrow at Scotstoun on Saturday in their final game of the season. Rottenrow, already crowned West Region Division two winners, have issued a number of thrashings to more experienced teams during their passage to victory this year including a 13-0 drubbing which has contributed to their 145 goals from 21 games.
The Development Squad were also missing Keeper David Ogilvie and Captain Willie Allan who could not make the game due to David?s impending marriage which was taking place thirty minutes after this afternoons pushback.
Today?s goal keeper was Jonny Barlow, the defence combinations were James MacPherson. Edward McGuire, Martin Byrne, Donald Birthday Boy Campbell, Alan Bryce and Player / Coach Steve Bain. The midfield combinations were Dick Donaldson, Neil McIntyre, Ronnie McGuire, Billy Anderson and Lucas Farndale. Upfront were Ian McIntyre, James Wood, Grant Toghill and Jack Jamieson.
From the pushback Rottenrow set the scene, this extremely fit, fast, physical side were determined to display their prowess by giving the development squad a hard time, and keeper Barlow was in action pulling of the first of many excellent saves after only three minutes. Constant pressure by Rottenrow resulted in a brace of goals at ten minutes in quick succession.

In his half time team talk Player / Coach Steve Bain identified that whilst the team were just about holding up, as people were tiring in the warm Saturday afternoon sunshine, he wanted to play three quarter court hockey.
Kelburne battened down their hatches and defended the Rottenrow onslaughts with real vigour, they even managed to get the ball into the opposition D a couple of times to win short corners but they were unable to convert the opportunities due to the speed of the opposition off their goal line!
Kelburne?s tactics continued to contain the game until the 65th minute when Rottenrow pounced for another brace of goals.

In his post match wrap up Bain stated that today?s performance was excellent given that other more experienced teams had failed to contain the league champions as well as the youngsters had. Jonny Barlow was named man of the match. He went on to congratulate the squad on their seasons performance, particularly when you consider that half of today?s squad were in their first year of senior hockey and four were still only aged between twelve and thirteen years old.
Bain went on to thank all of the experienced adult players for their superb support during the year. He hoped that any of the youngsters on district or national duty over the summer learned from their summer experience and came back next season stronger, fitter and hopefully a little taller. He also hoped that the older players would attempt not to grow in any other direction.
The Fives offer their congratulations to their super keeper David Ogilvie and his new wife Angela on their marriage and wish them lots of happyness in their time together.
