As the start of the new season approached many new faces were welcomed to Kelburne along with welcoming back some old ones. With our Goalie away cooking up a culinary storm, Elaine Torry (ET) returned to the ?Burne in her goalie kit, controlling the team from between the posts. With a good warm up under our belts we were ready to begin the 1st game of the season when the Bellahouston water cannons helped by a severe side wind soaked every single member of the team and their supporters. Not allowing this to dampen their spirits, the Kelburne girls stepped onto the pitch ready to go. Without a goal keeper, MCCW were able to overload the Kelburne defence from the beginning, but a strong back line of Ellie Halliday, Jen Morgan, Briony Coyle and Hayley Skimming kept their composure and soaked up the pressure. Unfortunately after only 7 minutes in her first game in the Kelburne colours, Gail Johnston had to go off with a pulled hamstring but was ably replaced by Molly Godfry. Eventually MCCW broke through and were awarded a penalty corner, with great reactions from ET the first shot was sent back to top ?D? but was unfortunately picked up by a striker and hit straight into the bottom corner. Not allowing heads to go down Kelburne fought on but struggled to get the ball up to the other end of the pitch to create chances.
First Half - Kelburne 0 - 1 MCCW (B)
With an inspirational team talk at half time from Captain Morgan and a few position changes, the Kelburne girls went back out with great determination. Within the first 5 minutes it looked like a whole new team had stepped out with the ball being played from player to player and pushing up towards the goal. The forwards, Kirsty Harper and Rachel Ewing, were running the defence ragged but just couldn?t get the ball into the ?D? to pressurise the newly arrived goal keeper. A fast break from MCCW saw goal number 2 come out of nowhere and the defence were left standing watching the ball go over the line. With MCCW pressurising the defence once again Briony Coyle made a heroic block at the top of the ?D? only for the ball to come flying high and strike her on the side of the face. Unfortunately she was unable to play on but we are hopeful that she will make a Kate Walsh style return in the not to distant future, stronger than ever. With a quick reshuffle of positions newcomers Morven MacEwen and Abi Robb showed their drive and pushed the team forward, and with the help of Emma Barlow and her silky skills Kelburne were awarded a penalty corner. A strong push out to Ewing to stop at top ?D? was pushed in for a straight strike from Barlow that skimmed past the post. With increasing determination the Kelburne girls continued to assault the MCCW defence, Susan Deanie trying to find a pass into the ?D? managed to play the ball off of a foot for another penalty corner, this time a change of tactic saw the ball saved by the keeper and a scramble to get the ball in the back of the net but to no avail. In a rare moment of loss of concentration MCCW broke down the middle of the pitch and as the Kelburne defence struggled to get back to make the tackle the ball went screaming into the net past the keepers out stretched foot. With the clock counting down Kelburne pushed for one last attack and were rewarded with another penalty corner. Barlow slipped the ball left to MacEwen for a good strong strike on goal that the keeper just managed to get her foot on to deny Kelburne even one goal in their first match of the season.
A superb performance from all the girls - the result does not reflect the great hockey that was played.
A special thanks to Raymond Nelson for his umpiring and to the ?soaked? supporters.
