Kelburne Ladies 3s v Ayr Ladies 2s

It was a cold, wet afternoon at Linwood and the Kelburne girls knew this would be a difficult shift as they were starting with only 10 players on the field. Despite this the girls started in positive mood and looked bright. They quickly put pressure on the Ayr defence with some confident play. The arrival of Elaine Fleming then took Kelburne to a full team. A lifted ball resulted in Kelburne being awarded a free hit deep in the Ayr half.  Jen Owen played a lovely shot in to the circle but unfortunately for no reward on this occasion. The Kelburne defence of Emma 'the diver' Ryan, Michelle Bain & Taylor Bain were solid in their defensive duties, ensuring Ayr did not trouble Eilidh Fleming in goal. Eilidh was only required to make a first save after 20 mins. A couple of crucial clearances off the line came from Emma & Michelle making sure Ayr did not take the lead. Young Kathryn Meenan showed great skill down the right, driving past her opponents to win a long corner but Kelburne were unable to take anything from this. The family link paid off with Michelle & Rachel Bain (mum & daughter) showing great awareness of each other's play to link up well on the left side. Ayr won a long corner which seen an amazing clearance off the line by Suzette Austin. The defence stayed strong under a period of pressure by Ayr to keep the score even at half time.

Half time score Kelburne 0 - Ayr 0

A few minutes into the 2nd half saw Ayr take the lead after a momentary lapse in concentration from Kelburne. But keeping their heads high the girls very quickly managed to win a short corner with Emma passing out to Jen who put the ball sweetly into the Ayr goal with her trademark super strike. Kelburne continued to pressurise the Ayr defence with shots by Emma & Suzette going just wide. Ayr took the lead once again from a short corner. They had another chance to go further ahead but Michelle was on hand once again to clear the ball off the line. Kelburne advanced once again with Suzanne Allan playing a lovely ball through for Jen to win another short corner. The ball went out for a long corner to be awarded and Emma dribbled the ball past several players into the circle, where after a beautiful dive she still somehow managed to get a shot away and into the Ayr goal. Immediately Ayr broke forward, catching Kelburne on the backfoot as they were pushing for a winner. Thankfully Eilidh was on hand & protected her goal well, seeing the Ayr striker put the ball wide of her post. With a minute or so to go Kelburne were looking for another opportunity for a winning goal and Denise Hipson played a lovely square pass to put Kathryn through for a 1 on 1 with the Ayr GK but unfortunately for Kelburne she pulled off a great save. The final whistle was then blown.

Full time score Kelburne 2- Ayr 2

This was a fantastic display by the girls today and another great team effort with everyone playing an important part. The girls were unlucky not to come away with a win today but they should all be very proud of their performance. Donald Campbell provided the girls with excellent coaching from the sidelines. A word of thanks to him and to Ron Martin for umpiring. Next week sees the girls take on East Kilbride 2s at home.
