Kelburne Men's 3s Beat East Kilbride Men's HC 7-1

On Thursday 29.9.18 - East Kilbride start the game at Glasgow Green passing the ball straight to a Kelburne Defender. For the first 5 minutes or so, both teams are keen to get the ball playing up the pitch, Kelburne quickly won a Penalty Corner which Phil Nijsen scored Kelburne's first goal, a drag flick from the top of the "D" into the top left corner of the net. Within a minutes of the first goal by Kelburne, East Kilbride get a lucky ball and take it up the pitch and takes a two on one shot at goalkeeper Matthew Retson which only just touches the inside of his kicker putting the ball by behind the Goal Line for a Long Corner. Not long after Chris Nelson scores a second goal for the Burne making two - nil with a back hand volley between the left hand of the keeper and the post. At this point it was clear to see that Kelburne were the better side in this game. With a few minutes to go of the first half, Kelburne take another shot at goal with first shot being saved by the goalkeeper, Owen Donnelly makes the score line three nil pushing the ball past the goalkeeper while he is on the ground.

Half time score: Kelburne 3 East Kilbride 0

Kelburne started the second half by returning the ball back to an East kilbride Defender. From early on in the Second half it was clear to see that Kelburne had control of the game. After a short while of being in the D, Kelburne managed to win another Penalty Corner. Injected by Stevie Berry, dummed by Phil Nejsen and hit into the back of the goal by Bob Martin - adding a fourth goal to the score line. Within moments of the fourth goal being scored, Connor Cusack-Maclean added his name to the score sheet from receiving a pass from Owen Donnelly from the 23-metre line adding the 5th goal. After Kelburne scored their 5th East Kilbride were getting more of the ball and pushing towards the Kelburne D. However, after making an attack at Kelburne, Kelburne managed to pick up the ball and make a counter attack leading to the second goal from Bob Martin, a back hand from the right hand side of the goal at a tight angle. After Bob Martin scored the sixth goal East Kilbride pushed to the Kelburne D and managed to pull a goal back just passing under goalkeeper Matthew Retson's stick while diving towards the ball. In the final seconds of the game Phil Nijsen added a second goal to his name, just before the final Whistle. Final score Kelburne 7 - East Kilbride 1. Fantastic game both on the attack and defensive.

Kelburne Ladies' 2s Lose to Falkirk & Linlithgow

On Saturday 6.10.18 - The younger Kelburne women’s 2s team had first pass back against the more experienced Falkirk and Linlithgow. It was a tough first half from the very first whistle with Falkirk and Linlithgow dominating throughout. Kelburne defended well and goalie Lynn Houston gave an outstanding performance, but it was a tough score line at 0-9 at half time. It was a game of 2 halves, Kelburne came out defending stronger with many more counter attacks against Falkirk and Linlithgow. Jen Morgan took an injury to the head, but came back on to finish the match. Falkirk and Linlithgow didn’t manage to convert their short corners into goals, and again an amazing performance from goalie Lynn. After a hard fought second half the score line finished at 0-11 to Falkirk and Linlithgow after a fantastic effort from both sides. Kelburne’s women’s 2s next game will be against Edinburgh hockey club at home.

Kelburne Ladies' 3s Beat Uddingston 2s 3-2

On Saturday 6.10.18 - Kelburne Ladies 3s versus Uddingston was a nail biting match from start to finish as the young Kelburne side fought hard for their first win of the season. From the pushback, the Kelburne midfield of Morven, Eve and Abbie used their skills to keep possession of the ball with the more experienced Kelburne players leading by example to minimise Uddingston’s attacks on goal. With Jen Owen up front, Kelburne put early pressure on the Uddingston defence and quickly secured a short corner which Jen blasted past the keeper. Uddingston responded quickly and, within minutes, won a short corner which, despite brave defending from the Kelburne side, they slotted into the goal. Another Uddingston goal quickly followed. But the Kelburne side demonstrated real resilience and determination as they worked skilfully in midfield to drive the ball up to Jen Owen who crossed the ball to Lucy Macmillan just outside the D. She worked past two defenders and slotted the ball past the Uddingston keeper. Half time 2-2. The second half was end to end as both sides fought for the match. Isla Taylor had a great early strike which went just wide of the post. Freya Halliday, in her first match for the Ladies 3s, worked hard in defence alongside Carol, Fiona, Esme, Amiee and Mya to keep Uddingston at bay. Kelburne continued to press for the goal with Iona linking up well with the midfield leading to Charley Austin securing a short corner which Jen Owen shot low and hard past the Uddingston keeper. Uddingston fought back and only some expert defending at short corners kept the Kelburne side in the lead. Excellent time management from Jen Owen saw the Kelburne side close out the match and secure their first win of the season. This was a well-deserved victory for the young team after a few tough weeks. They strode off the pitch with beaming smiles and enjoyed their well-earned match teas and bananas! Kelburne U15s Play Uddingston U15s in Friendly

On Sunday 30.9.18 - the Kelburne Youngsters played their first U15s match of the season in a friendly vs a young Uddingston side at Uddingston’s home ground. It was an exciting and tense 4 quarters of the game as the two sides fought for the win. Both of the Kelburne U15s sides played some excellent hockey and for the most part domineered the game with some strong passing up and down the park, but despite some well executed short-corners, they couldn’t get past the young Uddingston goalies. The Final Score for each of the two games played was not a true reflection of the game, Kelburne 1-2 Uddingston.

A great opportunity for youngsters to develop and improve their hockey skills and to have the all-important ‘game time’ to take them to the next level.

Thank you to all the coaches and umpires on the day and to Uddingston for hosting and organising what was a great afternoon.

Kelburne Mens' 5s Beat Hillhead 4s 2-1

On 29.9.18 - Kelburne 5s verses Hillhead 4s was an exciting match from start to finish. From the start Kelburne worked extremely hard, keeping possession of the ball and frustrating Hillhead. The more experienced players in Kelburne’s defence and midfield led by example, limiting shots on goal for Hillhead but when called upon, goalkeeper Fionn Wilson made some great clearances. Kelburne were taking the game to Hillhead and Hamish Walker was a great example of that positive attitude, his driving run into the Hillhead circle and them being fouled earned Kelburne another short corner. Kelburne were then rewarded for their efforts when Dick Donaldson pulled the strings, combining well with the menacing Don Tervit to expose the Hillhead defence. With 10 minutes of the match remaining Sam Hunt displayed some nice skills in the Hillhead circle to force a foul and win another short corner. This time Don Tervit made no mistake, placing his shot perfectly to give Kelburne the lead. It was a tense end to the match and young goalkeeper Rowan McClure made a stunning save to turn the ball around the post. Hillhead then won a series of short corners but the shear determination of the Kelburne rear guard blocked everything thrown at them to ensure a very fine victory for Kelburne. All the youngsters played an integral part in this excellent Kelburne victory.

Kelburne Ladies' 3s Miss Out to Stepps

Saturday 29th Sept 2018 - Kelburne Ladies 3’s played a consistently strong game today being coached and encouraged by Jen Morgan, against a more experienced, and at times, overly aggressive opposition. Stepps put pressure on the young team from the start and an early shot on goal was skilfully cleared by Rebecca. Stepps pressed high to keep the pressure on the Kelburne defence which remained solid during each attack. All the mid field and defenders working well together to clear the ball on a number of occasions. Stepps continued to attack and were awarded 4 short corners in quick succession. Each time the Kelburne defence charged out at the attacking players with speed and confidence. The 5th short corner saw Stepps connect with a blistering number one hit which produced a fantastic save by Elaine. Carol cleared the ball out to Jen and Kelburne were on the break. Jen squeezed a neat pass through to Morven who then had a short run on goal making a shot which went just side of the post. With renewed belief that this game was not going all one way Kelburne took opportunities to intercept and gain possession. The constant high paced game continued with chances being created at both ends of the pitch as Ailsa, Ally and Jodi supported in defence , Niamh, Eve, Jessica & Fiona worked hard in midfield while in play, and Emma, Abbie, Lucy, Jen and Charley looked opportunities to pressure Stepps near the goal. Tenacity and determination meant the half time score line was 0-0. With renewed energy the first 5 minutes of the second half looked like Kelburne had the upper hand. With a quick interception and turn of speed Stepps quickly had the ball in Kelburne’s goal area and won the first short corner of the second half. A clean corner saw Stepps take an early lead in the second half. The team showed maturity in quickly getting back into the game. A short corner for Kelburne resulted in a shot from Jen going just wide of the post again! In the closing stages of the game there was frustration from Stepps as they continued to press high at every opportunity only to be outrun or manoeuvred. In the final minute of the game Stepps continued pressure resulted in being awarded a short corner. The whole Stepps team surrounded the Kelburne goal area to try to score another goal. The defence reacted quickly to the injection and then experience Stepps forward struck the ball high into the top right hand corner of the net. The opposition were foiled again as the shot was spectacularly saved by Elaine’s ketchup coloured glove. Final score 1-0 to Stepps. Onwards and upwards for this team who next play away to Uddingston on 6th October at 4pm.

Team West takes Gold in U18s and Silver in U16s at Scottish Inter Districts

Great Results for Team West at this weekend's U18s & U16s Boys' Inter-Districts

Congratulations to our Kelburne youngsters and all in team West, fantastic performances from extremely talented players. It was a well-fought tournament at Peffermill in Edinburgh with some outstanding play from the U18s & U16s throughout the weekend.

Boys’ U18s:

Team West U18s won all their games stacking-up extremely well over East and Midland to take Gold. Well done to our own club players: Logan McClure (GK), Finlay Halliday and Niall Taylor. An outstanding performance from all in team West.

Boys’ U16s

The U16s team West played an outstanding tournament with some convincing scores taking Silver. Well done to our own youngsters: Rowan McClure (GK) and Fergus Noble.

Charleston Cycles Kelburne Ladies' 1s Miss Out vs ESM

On Saturday 22.9.18 - A very young Kelburne side travelled to Edinburgh to play their 2nd game in National League 2. Kelburne knew this would be a challenging game as their opposition have won all of their games so far and enjoyed a strong season last year, however the side were prepared to work hard. Kelburne started the game really strong putting the home side under pressure and winning a few short corners that they unfortunately did not capitalise on. The home team were mostly relying on breaks and managed to win a couple of short corners. The experienced side converted their second. The half ended 1 nil to the home side largely against the run of play. At the restart It was evident that Kelburne wanted to continue their strong performance and with in just a few minutes some lovely play involving many of the side found a short corner being awarded in the home team’s circle. A drag flick from Lucy Bliss at the top deflected off the runners stick sending the ball looping into the top left corner of the goal levelling the score early in the second half. Kelburne continued to dominate the game however the possession and play in the home team’s half did not convert to goals. As the second half continued Kelburne began to tire and the depleated bench began to tell on the team. ESM attacked down the left side of the field and entered the circle with players crowding the young Kelburne keeper, Emily Irving, who pulled off a number of amazing reactive saves however the ball trickled over the line. Kelburne reacted well and continued to push for an equaliser. Having been denied a number of short corners the young side found themselves down to ten men when two wayward tackles resulted in injury to both Cara Bruce and Jesse Cuthbertson. Capitalising on this ESM broke up the field once more and won themselves another short corner. ESM slipped the ball left and shot from an angle. This was blocked by the youngest member of the squad, Jenna Brolly, who then found herself on the receiving end of another crunching tackle however this was awarded as was another short corner which the home side converted to end the game in a 3-1 victory.

Kelburne Ladies' 2s Lose Out to Grange Ladies

On Saturday 22.9.18 - Kelburne had the better of the early exchanges but without creating any clear opportunities. The first chance of the game fell to grange however the outcome was unsuccessful and was saved by Lynne Houston before Kelburne cleared it, after a scramble in the D. The next period was an even contest with both teams creating chances and opportunities after good exchanges. The good period led to Kelburne gaining their first short corner but with no success. With the first half coming to a close, Grange picked up their first short corner but couldn’t get the shot on target. They had another attempt at goal but it was yet again saved by Lynne Houston. The second half Grange picked up another short corner but had no success. A shot at goal lead to another short corner for Grange again with no outcome. There was another short corner for Grange with another fabulous save by Lynne Houston. Grange scores 20 minutes into the second half from a short corner. Grange had numerous chances at short corners with no outcome. Dalia Stewart created a short corner for Kelburne with no goal however another short corner was given. There was some really good passage of play by Kelburne. A short corner was given for Kelburne with no success. A short was given to Grange and they managed to score within the last couple of minutes. The Final Score was 2-0 to Grange, however, the score did not reflect the actual game.

Boys’ U16’s Inter Districts - Team West took SILVER in 2017

Kelburne Ladies 1s Beat Edinburgh Cala 1s 5-2

Saturday, September 8th saw the opening game of the season in National League Division 2 for the Kelburne Ladies 1s against Edinburgh Hockey Club Cala Ladies 1s. Having taken the opportunity to get some solid pre-season fitness and training under their belts during the summer break, the ladies were keen to get the new season underway. Head Coach, David Westwood, took the opportunity to introduce some new faces, with Holly Hendry and Philippa Saddler making promising debuts, alongside more established players. Kelburne took a little while to settle into the game and Cala looked the more dangerous team from the start, forcing Kelburne goalkeeper Emily Irving into action with some good saves. However, Cala’s eagerness saw them begin to make mistakes, fatally in the D which saw Kelburne win a penalty corner, stopped with precision by Catherine McLauchlan and converted through a reverse stick strike by midfielder Lucy Bliss. Bliss then converted her second with a drag flick at waist height leaving the goalie the only option of watching the ball fly past her. Cala quickly went onto the offensive and pulled one back much to the angst of the watching supporters. However, with a tackle on Drew Berry that saw her brought down in the box, opportunity presented itself and Berry calmly converted a penalty flick. Half time score 3-1 Kelburne.

Revived, a rejuvenated Cala again went into the offence and some frenetic action in the D saw an almost unavoidable deflection by the Kelburne defence, causing an own goal. The scoreline was quickly adjusted again however by Megan Ralph with a beautiful unmarked run and a strong strike to beat the goalkeeper, giving the Kelburne Ladies a little more breathing space as the match marched towards the full time whistle. The spectators were hungry for more and, with an encouraging cheer of “one more goal before we go home” thrown out from the stand, Jessie Cuthbertson took up the challenge and, in the dying seconds of the game, deftly slipped goal no.5 past the keeper! Final score Kelburne 5 - Cala Ladies 2

Noble Signs Kelburne Men's 2s Beat Ellon Men's 1s 6-1

On Sunday 16.9.18 the men's 2s played out a scrappy game in Aberdeen against Ellon mens 1s to begin their defence of the district cup. The game started slowly with Kelburne failing to threaten inside the opposition D. The deadlock was eventually broken with a neat finish from J.G Shepherd. Gary Brolly and Phil Nijsen chipped in with 2 impressive drag flicks to take the score to 3-0 heading into half time. Kelburne began the second half with the intentions of killing the game off early on. Callum McCaffer prodded the ball into the back of the net after a scramble in front of the Ellon goal. J-G scored his second of the game with a powerful reverse stick strike beyond the keeper. Ciaran Wilcox found himself at right place at the right time to tap in Kelburne's 6th all but ensuring the win. Ellon managed a late consolation from their only short corner of the game, a great strike past Logan McClure in goals. The 6-1 victory sees the Noble Signs Kelburne men's 2s into the next round of the cup as they hope to retain their trophy.

Pro-life Kelburne Ladies 2s vs Stirling Wanderers

On Saturday 15.9.18 - Superb play from around the pitch, the score never reflected the way that Kelburne played, putting up excellent defence and skillful play up and down the mucky park with admirable leads left Kelburne with a unfortunate score line.  1st half: Starting the first half, with confidence Kelburne had the first chance on goal, this was a great strike by Jen Morgan and just skimmed by the post, soon after Jen took a ball to the forearm and sat out for 5 mins to ensure there was no serious damage .  Stirling were high pressing and managed to sneak their way into the circle and that put them 1-0 up.  Stirling had another strike on goal, 2-0 up.  5 minutes later, despite disputes between the umpire and players, Stirling managed to make the score 3-0.  Stirling managed to squeeze in a short corner just before half time however it was well cleared by the defenders. 2nd half: Kelburne was still feeling confident going into the second half and managed to get 2 short corners in a row, unfortunately this had no effect to the score.  Kelburne had 5 more short corners but again there was no change to score.   Stirling managed to get another strike on target, but Lynne Houston made an excellent save.  Stirling managed to score twice within the space of a couple of minutes, putting the score 5-0.   There was strong defending and some formidable saves from Kelburne but unfortunately, persistence from Stirling managed to get another shot in the back of the net, score was 6-0   Throughout the game Kelburne managed to keep their heads and kept composure until the end.

Kelburne Ladies 3s Lose out to Loch Lomond in Cup Match

On Saturday 15.9.18 - Our young side had a confident start to their Cup game. It was great to have Jen Owen back in super form and creating lots of pressure in the opening minutes, linking up well with midfield. Kelburne looked confident with their first long corner but the resulting shot on goal was just wide. Kelburne’s young side continued to push forward with Morven and Eve maintaining a lot of possession in midfield. Good play up the wing created more chances with the ball being driven in hard but Kelburne were unlucky not to capitalise on these chances. With Carol and Fiona strong in defence, Loch Lomond failed to create many chances and their first short corner was quickly cleared. Abbie took the ball for a run up the right wing and after completing a ‘nutmeg’ she fired the ball across the D. A short corner followed which Jen struck well and a quick deflection was well saved by the GK. A short corner to Loch Lomond was quickly dealt with by our defence with Carol leading by example and clearing the ball to the halfway line. Kelburne continued pressing and another short corner was saved well by their GK. The team had great possession throughout the 1st half. At halftime the game remained scoreless and the seagulls were circling at this feast of Hockey. The 2nd half began with Lindsay being called into action with a good save. Kelburne continued to press with accurate, quick passing and a short corner needed the defence to send Jen’s shot wide of the goal. The team continued to link up well and great tackling by Charley on the wing created more possession for the young side. The defence held strong under sustained pressure with brave stops from Carol and Eve tracked back well to assist and clear the ball. Against the run of play Loch Lomond managed to penetrate the Kelburne defence and scored their first goal at close range. Loch Lomond took a lot of confidence from their goal and increased pressure but the ball was won back well in midfield. Another shot from Loch Lomond was saved well on the line by Lindsay in goal. Kelburne kept pushing up and won a short corner in the final few minutes of the game. Charley had an accurate and strong shot on goal bravely saved on the line. Loch Lomond quickly retained possession and a short corner was awarded in the last minute of the game which allowed Loch Lomond to score with a deflected shot. The game finished 2-0 to Loch Lomond but Kelburne yet again impressed all those watching by their tenacity and determination to control the game and drive forward at every opportunity. With her fantastic leadership and strength in defence Carol was a well deserved MVP 🎉

Kelburne Men's 4 & Men's 5s Battle it out in Kelburne Derby

On Saturday 15.9.18 - With the first Kelburne Derby of the season, it was pride and honour at stake along with 3 points for a victory. The 4s started well and opened the scoring early through Colin Fairbairn. Yet the 5s soon got back on level terms when Dick Donaldson level d from a Short Corner. Soon it was 2-1 to the 5s when Don Tervit followed up on another Short Corner. With both teams battling for midfield supremacy it was frantic but neither side could add to the score before half time. Kelburne 4’s Captain, Ryan Wood, changed things tactically for the second half. This seemed to work as they started strongly and were soon on level terms. Shaun Jardine-Malone finished off a slick Short Corner move. Soon it was 3-2 to the 4s as John Miller finished off a flowing move. With the 4s on top they made the pressure count with a fortuitous 4th when Colin got his 2nd of the match with a reverse sweep which took a deflection off a defender’s foot, this wrong footed the keeper. The 5s started to get back into the game, putting pressure on the 4’s defence. With a couple of minutes remaining Don got his 2nd making it 4-3. There was no further scoring with the 4s beating 5s in a close and hard fought match.
