Kelburne Ladies' 2s Beat Ayr 1s 2-1

It was a bright and sunny Saturday afternoon on 9th November that saw a young Kelburne Ladies 2s take on Ayr Ladies 1s. With the return of a couple of more experienced players, the coach was looking to win the game. Kelburne dominated possession in the first half, with some good linking play between Abbie Irvine and Sara McGlennon down the left wing which resulted in one of many short corners. The straight was saved by the goalie. Morven McEwan and Charley Austin worked well in midfield and the build-up play resulted in Maddy Bower picking up the ball at top D and scoring with a reverse hit. The defence of Freya Halliday and Rebecca Finney were largely involved in clearing up loose balls and building up play from defence. The second half saw Ayr approach the game with more determination, however, GK Rhiannon Smith made some great saves to keep Kelburne in front. A ball cleared from defence was pounced upon by Laura Carlton who dribbled skilfully towards the D where she passed wide to Isla Taylor at the back post who volleyed it past the goalie making it 2-0 to Kelburne. As the Ayr team looked to get a goal back, the midfield of Jen Owen and Jessica MacKenzie worked tirelessly to break down play and help the defence. Despite Kelburne fighting off Ayr’s attack, an unlucky short corner given against them in the last 5 mins saw Ayr take a strong straight strike and score. The final score was 2-1 to Kelburne which was an excellent result for the young team against the experienced Ayr team and gave them a positive mindset for their away game vs St. Andrews the following day. Well done ladies!
