Gordon Shepherd named Bromac Kelburne Coach

IMG_1297.PNG

The club are delighted to announce the appointment of Gordon Shepherd as the new coach for the Bromac Men's 1st XI squad. As the current Scotland Senior Ladies coach, Gordon brings with him a wealth of experience and this will complement the squad as they look to build on last years success. Previous to his appointment as Scotland Ladies coach, Gordon had a successful spell with Clydesdale Men and spent 4 years as Senior Men’s assistant coach, during which he worked with several of the current Kelburne squad.

With the club returning to the EHL and looking to be successful here and continue our run of 12 successive league titles,  the process of recruiting a new coach has been an ongoing process, with President Mark Fulton commenting,

“As a club we identified the need to recruit an off-field coach to take the squad in a different direction whilst also building on the treble-winning success of Chris Nelson and Iain Scholefield during last season. We are very confident this marque recruitment of Gordon will provide further benefit to the squad of players at our disposal and keep us at the forefront in the coming years ahead.  From our first meeting with Gordon,  it was clear there was a shared vision for the direction of the club and everyone at Kelburne is very excited to have him on board”

Speaking about his appointment, Shepherd said

I am delighted to be working with Kelburne to further develop what is an already successful club. There is a good group of experienced players and talented youngsters and this makes for an exciting blend. I intend to challenge all the players to drive for more success domestically and also at European level.”

Preparations for the new season are well underway, leading up to the start of the season and the EHL in October.

Kelburne Juniors Summer Camp 2016

IMG_2273.JPG

Kelburne hockey clubs home ground at Whitehaugh hosted 60 junior members this week during the annual summer coaching camp.  Organised by club president Mark Fulton and coached by experienced senior players, the juniors were put through their paces in an action packed week.

With a focus on the Teaching Games for Understanding approach, the young players were supported as they developed their creativity and decision making during games based sessions.  Jockey Coach Rachael Ewing-Day said, 'It's been great to see the youngsters come on both technically and tactically as the week has progressed, the future is bright for the next generation at Kelburne'.

Sessions saw the players physically develop their fitness, co-ordination and agility while working together in teams to develop their social skills.  Mentally their decision-making, concentration and and problem solving abilities were challenged as the coaches provided opportunities aimed to prepare them emotionally for the challenges of playing the directly competitive game.

Kelburne Juniors Jessica, Caitlin and Cameron MacKenzie said, 'We have been to the camp many times and we really enjoy our time here... During the camp we do fun activities like hockey games, challenges and matches.... we improve our fitness during other games like rounders and water fights.'    'Kelburne is the perfect place to learn and its worth the week as you become better than you ever thought you could be.'  'We have a tournament at the end of the week and there are prizes to be won... the theme this year was the olympics where the task was to dress up.'

In celebration of the olympics the Paisley team convinced Usain Bolt to fly out prior to defending his titles to make the  presentation to the Juniors.

The camps run at Kelburne Cricket Club, Barshaw Drive, Paisley, Monday to Friday from 10am - 3pm. It costs £55 for the week with the next camp is scheduled for Easter 2017.  For anyone looking to join there is junior training on a Saturday mornings from 9:45am-11:00am, see the junior section in our website for further details, www.kelburne.co.uk

Former Burne Stars in International Success

Scotland Senior Men kicked off their build up to the World League Tournament in September with a confidence boosting win in an International event featuring France, Poland and Italy. The squad featured a number of ex Kelburne players including William Marshall, Ed Greaves, Kenny Bain, Michael Bremner and David Fosyth. All were key performers in the team's victory. A report on the trip can be found below.

http://www.scottish-hockey.org.uk/2016/june-2016/scotland-win-4-nations-tournament.aspx

The tournament was particularly special for both Kenny Bain and Ed Greaves. Bain represented Scotland for the 150th time and with time on his side will no doubt add many more. At the other end of the spectrum, Ed Greaves made his debut for the Senior side, finding himself amongst the goals. Ed who now plays for Loughbrough, where he attends University, worked his way through the ranks from youth player to 1st team regular and all at Kelburne would like to congratulate Ed and Kenny on their achievements.

Ladies in U21 Action.

Scotland U21 Women took part in a 3 game series against Ulster U23 last week at Glasgow Green. The games featured our own Drew Berry and Ellie Halliday. Great to see their hard work paying off with selection at international level.

Reports from all the games can be seen at the links below.

Ladies Starlet in International Action

Attachment-1.jpeg

June 17-19 saw the Scotland U16 Girls Development Squad undertake their final international of the season, a 3 match series against an older, very experienced Ulster U16 girls squad, at their home pitch, the Glasgow National Hockey Centre.

The first match took place on Friday afternoon at 4pm.  Ulster was quick to take charge and dominate the play in a very fast paced, physical game, which seemed to take the young Scotland squad by surprise.  Kelburne striker, Lucy Bliss, scored Scotland’s first goal to equalise 1-1 but after a promising first half for the home squad, the score finished with Ulster victorious 5-2.

The Scotland squad were down but not out and, instead, went back to the  Glynhill to review their performance and discuss improvements.  Their hard work and determination nearly paid off as the second match, on a sunny Saturday afternoon at 4pm, finished in a nailbiting 3-3 draw (a further Scotland goal was disallowed).

However a draw wasn’t good enough for the determined Scotland squad and again, the girls spent their evening and the next morning preparing for the third and final match on Sunday ahead.  A team meeting analysed video of the match to hone their strengths and identify weaknesses in their opposition with the full match warmup spent rehearsing their plays.

Under Sunday's grey skies and light drizzle, Ulster tried again and again in vain to gain the upper hand, winning a series of short corners, which they subsequently failed to convert. However, the Scotland resolute remained firm and the girls working hard, finished the test series with a 3-0 victory (an Ulster goal in the dying minutes of the match was disallowed).

A great weekend of hockey to bring the U16s Girls international season to a close.

Lucy is currently age 13.  She started her playing career as a Kelburne jockey at age 9 (pictured below with some Kelburne rising stars!) before progressing into the Ladies 3s where she has played for two seasons.

Kelburne Juniors in International Action

Over the past 2 weeks Kelburne players have been representing Scotland in International action.

On the Men's side Finn Hailliday made his international debut at U16 level in a series against Wales at Glasgow Green. Playing in 2 out of the 3 games he looked at home in the surroundings and we are sure he will add to these appearances very soon.

On the Ladies side, Lexi Sabatelli captained the U16 girls to a 3-0 series victory, also against Wales. Producing a strong performance throughout the games, Lexi was able to transfer her fine domestic form to the international stage. She was joined in the team by Rachel Bain, who also performed well across the weekend.

Well done to all 3 from all at the club.

Second Match Ends in Stalemate

On day 2 of the  Eurohockey Club Champions Trophy at Glasgow Green, Bromac Kelburne were held to a 1-1 draw by Swiss side Rottweiss Wettingen. The result now means that the Paisley side must beat Irish outfit Banbridge to progress to the final on Monday. The Irishmen soundly defeated HC Minsk 4-1.

The first half Kelburne was a very tight affair with Kelburne not able to break down a very well-drilled, street-smart Rottweiss team. Somewhat against the run of play the Swiss won a penalty corner which they duly dispatched (Nicolas Steffen) after two re-bounds to take an unlikely lead. Kelburne continued with their patient passing but weren't able to make the breakthrough before halftime.

As with the first game against Minsk Kelburne flew out of the blocks in the second half, immediately putting Wettingen under pressure and getting behind their defence in a way that was beyond them in the first half. This pressure quickly told as Lee Morton converted a Penalty Corner switch into the bottom corner to level the scores at 1-1.

The match then settled into a very even, back-and forth that produced few more clear-cut chances.

Today's game is a 4.45pm start against the Irish team Banbridge HC with a place in Monday's final at stake.

Men Start Euros with a Comeback Win

Bromac Kelburne's first game as hosts of the Eurohockey Club Champions Trophy in Glasgow started with a 2-1 win over HC Minsk, much to the delight of a large crowd at the sun-dappled National Hockey Centre.

A tense and fairly even first half ended 1-0 to the Belarussians whose muscular, high-pressing style stopped the Paisley team from playing some of their best hockey. Their only penalty corner of the half resulted in a clever execution to put the recently-arrived eastern Europeans ahead.

In the second hand half the complexion of the game changed completely with Minsk abandoning their high press and Kelburne upping the tempo of their passing even higher. This started to create more space for the Paisley team to impose their attacking skills on the game with Scholefield, Nelson and Lee Morton coming increasingly to the fore. But it was to be club legend Ross Macpherson who, after just 5 minutes, grabbed the equaliser from close range - incredibly 21 years on from being a scorer the last time Kelburne hosted a European tournament. With the momentum very much with The 'Burne more chances came: two penalty corners from Cairns were a whisker away before midfield general Iain Scholefield broke the deadlock and put his team 2-1 up. After a quick break a delightful through-ball found 'Scholesy' breaking beyond the opposition defence to round the keeper and finish high into the net.

After this breakthrough Kelburne maintained a controlled passing play for the remainder of the game and secured a vital first win.

Today's game is a 4.45pm start against the Swiss team HC Rotweiss Wettingen who drew 2-2 with Banbridge on day 1.

Victory Leaves Q-Bikes Kelburne 2nd Xi In Strong Position to Win League

Q-Bikes Kelburne 2nd Xi vs Inverleith 2nd Xi

With the previous weekends win of 8-0 versus the "Unaaay" the stalwarts of the 2nd Xi had high hopes of continuing their thunderous end to an extremely difficult campaign in the regional league.    Within the opening minutes of the game it was clear that the Burne' were on the upper hand with being able to maintain the majority of the ball possession, even though after a rocky start where an aerial ball fell to the speedy Inverleith forward who tried to round the 2nd Xi veteran Fergus Barrows who made an awe inspiring save to his left keeping the defensive record strong. This became obvious when Mark Connor received the ball at left back and fired the ball up to the halfway where a lurking Ben Peterson touched the ball over the Inverleith defender which allowed him to dribble to the circle and slotted the ball under the goalkeeper.  With the knowledge that the league could come down to goal difference the ever so eager Kelburne players were keen to score more goals, This inspired Andrew Duff who received a long ball from Mark Ralph who passed the ball to Andrew Bremner who cleverly disguised a pass back to Duff for an open goal.  Soon after obtaining possession again, Michael Nicol who was playing in Midfield slapped the ball to the top of the circle where the predator that is Ben Peterson smashed a reverse stick shot past the goalkeepers face into the back of the net.  After maintaining the majority of the possession and keeping composed with William Adams making some adventurous leads up the lines and linking well with the forward line he was able to pass the ball onto Duff who walked into the circle, and the opposition gave him too much time to shoot from the top which made the score 4-0.  Keeping up with rest of the players in the team inspired both of the young players Niall Taylor and Finn Halliday who connected with each other for Niall to take an ambitious shot against an on rushing goalkeeper, who made the save, this fortunately fell to Duff who shot instantly putting the ball in the net.  At this rate it was clear cut that Kelburne were not going to slow down and this momentum kept going with a solo effort run from Ben Peterson who received an aerial ball from Kelburne legend and ex coach Mark Ralph, which led to Ben strolling into the circle and shooting the ball past a helpless goalkeeper.  This game was a test of fitness and numbers as Inverleith had realized that their plan on not taking more players for the bench was a terrible idea as the squad Kelburne had brought were simply superior with the ball pace around the back from Fraser Scott and Craig Walker tearing apart the inverleith front line and with their experience keeping the composure and allowed us to play the ball to Matt McGinley who on the run linked with Ewan Carmichael who calmly lifted the ball past several defenders in a jaw dropping display of skill which some could say was comparable to Ronaldinho in his prime, and thunderously struck the ball with force at the keeper who brilliantly saved the ball but left the rebound to Ben who reversed the ball back post to a fully outstretched Andrew Bremner who dived and tapped the ball in to make the score 7-0. Half time

Q-Bikes Kelburne 7 Inverleith 0 After receiving an inspiration team talk from captain JG Shepherd at half time the team were motivated to score some more goals, and keep the clean sheet. With the youngsters in the team inspired they led the way with some incredible play breaking down the Inverleith defence and managed to get a short corner which allowed Ben to step up and throttle a drag flack through the goalkeepers legs.  At this stage in the game Inverleith began to just break down play, and had started to through Aerial balls at every opportunity to try and control the damage that kelburne were dealing upon them slowing down the goalscoring for the game. Due to this the speedy forwards of Inverleith had managed to pick up some miss-trapped balls which allowed them to get a few short corners against the Kelburne defence but these were easily saved from the experienced kelburne short corner defence team with honorable mention to Walker who somehow managed to charge out the ball and then smashed the ball up to the front line who in some clever play had ended up with Ben at back post pushing the ball in to make the score 9-0.  Through out the rest of the game there were more opportunities to both sides, but most were muffled from both keepers on the park making some great saves.  Within the dying moments of the game promising youngster Niall Taylor had found a foot within the D which led to the end whistle playing and the entire team coming up hoping for a 10th goal. After the first shot found a foot from the first runner a second corner was given. This next corner was up to drag flick specialist Michael Nicol who flicked the ball ferociously at the goal for it to come of the post and rebound straight back at him for Michael to first time volley the ball into the top corner where he brought the scoreline to 10-0 Final Score Q-Bikes Kelburne 10 Inverleith 0 For Q-Bikes Kelburne to win the league it will now come down to Grange 2nd Xi dropping points or a win on goal difference.

As a team we'd also like to thank the umpires over the season who without the games could not have happened, and also we'd like to thank the various spectators who have come to watch us play, we greatly appreciate the support from those who have. And special thanks to the various players who this season stepped in more often then not at last minute, without whom we could not have done this well.

Bromac Kelburne Youth Training Day Video

Saturday saw a great day of hockey with the Bromac 1st XI Men passing on their knowledge and skills the young talents of Kelburne. Thank you to all the parents and players that supported the event and we look forward to seeing you all back next weekend at the Euro Hockey Club Champions Trophy with the team's first game on Friday at 5.45pm vs Minsk.

Kelburne 2s go back to top of league with 1 game left

Kelburne had a lot to do to improve their chances of winning the league at their 'home' pitch against Edinburgh Uni 2's.

Kelburne started strong from their push back and within 3 mins created their first chance. Neil McIntyre turned strong to beat his man and pass to JG Shepherd at back post who deflected it wide. Kelburne did not lose hope and only a minute later created another opportunity. Michael Nicol managed to steal the ball high up the pitch and using his awesome skills to beat a few players then reverse it low into the corner. 1-0. Kelburne continued to push high up the pitch and they were rewarded for their efforts. This time JG unfortunate to not finish again with a great deflection but luckily Andrew Bremner was in hand to slot it in past a hopeless Edinburgh keeper.2-0. Kelburne lost a bit of pace and didn't manage to convert any more chances in the first half.

Halftime 2-0 Kelburne

The second half started as the first ended with Kelburne having little composure in the last quarter. It wasn't till great vision from Neil McIntyre who found Miles Goldie in space who played a quick 1-2 with Mark Ralph which ended up with Kelburne winning a short corner. The initial shot from Mark Ralph was blocked but Michael Nicol was on hand to hammer is second of the game into net. 3-0. This gave Kelburne a bit of momentum and started to move the ball about with ease. Only 5 minutes later winning another corner for Mark Ralph to hammer a straight strike past into the corner. 4-0. Kelburne managed to keep the pace high and shortly after managed to win another short corner. This one was blocked but with some great linking between Craig Walker and Michael Nicol created space for Miles Goldie to slip it in back post. 5-0. Kelburne knew they needed as many goals as possible to beat grange on goal difference so managed to dig deep and push on for more. The 6th goal came from another short corner where a flick from Michael Nicol found Andrew Bremner who deflected it over the keeper into the goal.6-0. With another short corner won by Kelburne gave the opportunity for a 7th. This time Michael Nicol needed no assistance finding the net. 7-0 the last goal came with only a few minutes to spare where a shot from Michael Nicol was blocked but JG shepherd managed to slot in on his reverse. 8-0 final score.

This has put Kelburne in a strong position to push on to win the league with their last game against Inverleith at Glasgow Green.
