Unlucky Ladies downed at Stirling

Kelburne Ladies 1s v Stirling Uni Women’s 1s

1/10/2022 - 2:30pm

Kelburne L1s 3-7 Strathclyde

Scorers: Simone Upman (2) and Charley Austin

The match started off to an unfortunate note with Stirling scoring 2 quick, yet rather simple goals which showed Kelburne were on the back foot. The first quarter Kelburne struggled to find themselves and it showed on the field where there was a lack of marking and all players ended up feeling rather aggravated by the low quality of umpiring towards both teams.

At half time, the situation was re-assessed and a few changes were made which saw Kelburne beginning to put up a fight after being 4-0 down. Two counter-attack goals were scored by Simone Upman, one being a solid back foot shot which had been one of the drills in the past weeks training, and the other being a reverse stick hit to send the ball soaring into the roof of the net. This lifted the team moral, however this was not enough to stop a few more simple goals getting past the Kelburne young, inexperienced goalkeeper, Lilly Davis. Despite the best efforts of all the Kelburne players who were all given rather specific roles to combat the Stirling side but it was not enough and after Kelburne managed to capitalise in a short corner to put their 3rd goal in by Charley Austin where she stayed calm and composed on the ball to put the set piece link up with Simone Upman smashing into the backboard, however it was too late and Stirling managed to hold and extend their lead for the rest of the game. The final 5 minutes of the game saw Kelburne replace their goalkeeper with an extra field player which helped them to put an end to the Stirling attack. The ladies all showed great character to continue fighting right up until the final whistle but a lot of work is still to be done.

The ladies now look ahead to Sunday the 9th where they will come up against lower league WIT in their first round Scottish Cup match and trust the week will be filled with positivity and good preparation.
