Men's 2s top the tree at Christmas

Kelburne Men’s 2s v University of St Andrews Men’s 1s

19/11/2022 - 12:20pm

Kelburne 2s 4-0 St Andrews 1s

Scorers: Fergus Duncan, Ewan Carmichael, JG Shephard and Callum McCaffer

With race night, fast approaching minds might have been elsewhere pre-game. After 5 minutes, it was obvious that this might have been the case. Guys weren’t taking the game seriously, so up stepped captain Carmichael to remind the team that you need to focus on the job in hand.

Kelburne started slowly running with the ball at every opportunity, with the team shape all over the place, therefore allowing St Andrews to actually think they might have a chance against the league leaders.

The first 1/4 went past without any goals with sloppy play from Kelburne, allowing St Andrew to have too much of the ball. After a good talking to from coach Chris Caldwell, and a shuffle of the pack, including deploying veteran Don Tervit up front to add energy to the forward line who looked slow and uninterested in events happening on the pitch. Within 5 minute's Kelburne took the lead through Fergus Duncan playing his first game for the 2s with a nice touch to slide the ball under the St Andrews goal keeper. Kelburne then made it 2 with a short corner conversion from J Shepherd with a nice low shot to the beat keeper to his left hand side. Kelburne lead two nil at half time.

Another stern talking to at half time from Caldwell made sure the lads didn’t relax and allow St Andrews back into the game. Kelburne began to marshall the game and snuffed out the attacks, solid defending from Tervit, Brolly, Hunt and Robbie, kept the score to 2-0 in the home teams favour with some great composure. Mopping up the midfielders mess, for slow, sloppy passing. Slack play from St Andrews allowed Kelburne to score a third goal with a tap in from Callum McCaffer who couldn’t miss from 1yd out, from his firat touch of the match. Kelburne scored again just before the full time whistle to finish the game 4-0. Credit goes to Fergus who played his first game for the 2s and scoring on his debut.

The team finish the first half unbeaten in the league and top for Christmas. The team look to build on the great start in the new year but are well aware that they are still developing and in no way favourites for the league but have progressed well so far.
