Men's 3s put up a fight against Hillhead 3s

Kelburne Men’s 3s v Hillhead 3’s

17/9/2022 - 12.15pm

Kelburne 3s 1 - 6 Hillhead 3s

Scorer: Dick Donaldson

The 3rd XI faced a tough start to the season against the reigning West Division Champions, Hillhead 3’s, at a sunny Glasgow Green. This was a new look 3rd team with a mix of some experienced heads and some young players who were experiencing this level for the first time.

The game started in a frantic fashion with Hillhead dominating possession whilst Kelburne looked to settle into the game. Hillhead had the better of the opening exchanges with some smooth passing but we’re kept at bay through a mixture of good defending and some missed opportunities. Early in the first half and Hillhead took the lead through open play before managing to bundle home a short corner at the near post. Kelburne then settled down a little and some great interchanges in the midfield brought the ball to Dick Donaldson who scorer a fantastic reverse hit in to the bottom right of the goal. Kelburne then had an opportunity to equalise through a David McGee short corner but a toe from the goalkeeper turned it wide. With the first half coming to an end, Hillhead managed to grab another short corner and managed to bundle the ball home after a good save from Rowan McClure.

Half Time - 3-1

The second half started in a calmer manner with the word at half time being to hold the shape and look for the easy ball. The chances were a mixture with some good runs from Kelburne leading to another short corner that broke down and was counter attacked by Hillhead to make it 4-1. Tiredness set in amongst the Kelburne team and this allowed the more experienced Hillhead team to build the pressure. After a couple of last minute tackles and goal line clearances, finally Hillhead broke through, twice in quick succession, to score two simple chances and for the game to finish at 6-1 to the defending Champions.

A tough start but a performance to build upon and that will hopefully yield results as the season goes on. The 3s are not in action next week due to the September weekend but will be back on duty the week after where they will look to continue their development.
