Kelburne hockey clubs home ground at Whitehaugh hosted 60 junior members this week during the annual summer coaching camp.  Organised by club president Mark Fulton and coached by experienced senior players, the juniors were put through their paces in an action packed week.

With a focus on the Teaching Games for Understanding approach, the young players were supported as they developed their creativity and decision making during games based sessions.  Jockey Coach Rachael Ewing-Day said, 'It's been great to see the youngsters come on both technically and tactically as the week has progressed, the future is bright for the next generation at Kelburne'.

Sessions saw the players physically develop their fitness, co-ordination and agility while working together in teams to develop their social skills.  Mentally their decision-making, concentration and and problem solving abilities were challenged as the coaches provided opportunities aimed to prepare them emotionally for the challenges of playing the directly competitive game.

Kelburne Juniors Jessica, Caitlin and Cameron MacKenzie said, 'We have been to the camp many times and we really enjoy our time here... During the camp we do fun activities like hockey games, challenges and matches.... we improve our fitness during other games like rounders and water fights.'    'Kelburne is the perfect place to learn and its worth the week as you become better than you ever thought you could be.'  'We have a tournament at the end of the week and there are prizes to be won... the theme this year was the olympics where the task was to dress up.'

In celebration of the olympics the Paisley team convinced Usain Bolt to fly out prior to defending his titles to make the  presentation to the Juniors.

The camps run at Kelburne Cricket Club, Barshaw Drive, Paisley, Monday to Friday from 10am - 3pm. It costs £55 for the week with the next camp is scheduled for Easter 2017.  For anyone looking to join there is junior training on a Saturday mornings from 9:45am-11:00am, see the junior section in our website for further details, www.kelburne.co.uk
