Cup Finals Weekend

Come along and support the club in the Scottish Cup Finals this weekend. Cheer on the Kelburne Men's 3s at 10am and the Men's 2s at 12pm at the GNHC.  The K5s also play at 12pm at Old Anniesland, Crow Road.

There are ten fantastic cup finals held over the weekend at the Glasgow National Hockey Centre and are all included in Cup Final tickets.

Pro-life Kelburne Mens 5s beat Anchor 3-2

This proved to be an awkward game for Kelburne, with Anchor taking an early lead despite having only 8 men. Sam Hunt brought the score level with some nice build up play on the right side but still Kelburne looked unsure about how to deal with the Anchor counter attack. Top goal scorer Don Tervit was brought into the action and it wasn’t long before he had an impact, nudging Kelburne in front with some nice work inside the circle. The lead didn’t last long and again Kelburne seemed unsure about how to defend another counter, allowing Anchor to level 2-2 going into halftime. Conditions were very warm and going into the second half Anchor were expected to tire, especially with only 8 men still, but Kelburne still struggled to find the net.  Some desperate defending and scrappy finishing frustrated Kelburne but perseverance paid off and Sam Hunt got himself into a good position in front of goal to give Kelburne a 3-2 lead. This match didn’t reflect recent performances by Kelburne but they managed to hold on and bag another valuable 3 points.

Pro-life Kelburne Mens 5s Beat Greenock 2s

On 14.4.18: In a lovely setting on a balmy (by recent standards) Saturday afternoon in Largs the Kelburne 5s took on a strong Greenock 2nd team. After losing the earlier meeting between the teams it was clear from the start that Greenock were keen to make up for this, and started the stronger shooting just past the right hand post early on. Their early pressure paid off when they won a short corner and fired high into the net, giving Fionn Wilson in goal no chance after just 5 minutes. Kelburne reacted well as first Charlie Feeney was unlucky to see his shot deflected past and then Sam Hunt had his well taken attempt saved by the keeper, Don was first to react but unfortunately his strike came back off the post. Play then went back up the other end as Fionn reacted well to save following another Greenock attack, to keep the score down. Greenock were then awarded another short corner, but Willie Hunt was out to clear this quickly to make sure there was no repeat from earlier. As Greenock continued to press, Callum Brown broke up their attack and quickly started a Kelburne counter with some nice stick play. This started a period of sustained pressure from Kelburne with Don feeding young Rory Donaldson, who was unfortunate to see his shot saved. Jared Bolland came off the bench and quickly got into the match passing in to Don who won a short. Following some great play from Rory, he laid it back for Dick, whose well struck shot was unable to be diverted in at the back post. As the 1st half was coming to a close, Kelburne kept up this pressure with some nice interplay from Dick and Don and again young Rory and Dick resulting in another shot being well saved by the keeper.  They wouldn't let up and after some great pressing from Jared, the ball broke to Hamish who found young Tommy Austin with a nice pass, and the reverse stick finish was sublime - quickly renamed from the side as the Tommyhawk! With just a couple of minutes left, Fionn had to be on his toes to make sure there was no quick response. There was still time for Rory to force a long corner and after some nice dribbling, a fine shot from Dick was once again denied by a great save. Half Time 1-1. Kelburne started the 2nd half where they left off with Charlie pressuring the Greenock defence to turn over possession. After just 5 minutes, following some lovely wing play from Sam he sent a well struck reverse stick pass to the centre and young Charlie ran in to finish with aplomb, sending it by the sprawling keeper to give the Kelburne team a 2-1 lead. Further pressure resulted in 2 quick short corners, the first a shot from Hamish again kept out by the alert keeper. The 2nd resulted in 2 shots from Don the first saved and 2nd into the side netting.

Following further skill from Sam down the right he again fired into the centre but as the defender missed it Jared was unable to take advantage as it came to him quickly. Another short for Kelburne resulted in a shot from Willie this time, but the same result as the keeper kept it out. After some lovely play from Calum Fleming he cleverly fed into Don who was once again denied by another fantastic save from the keeper. He was certainly out to make sure Don's dry streak in front of goal continued. Hamish then suffered a nasty cut to the eye which forced him off and Dick also had to leave the field around this time which seemed to disrupt the team for a spell. Young Rowan McClure in goal for the 2nd half had to be on his guard and did well to turn a Greenock shot round the post. As they continued to press, they forced a short corner and just as they thought they had scored, Scott Peters stepped in to make a fantastic goal line clearance to deny the equaliser. Unfortunately this only delayed the event as following another short a powerful hit to the bottom corner evaded Rowan's attempt to save it. With only a few minutes left, the young Kelburne team didn't let their heads go down, and as anyone who has watched them this season will know, they fight to the very end of every game, and so it proved once again. Following a great steal from Don he passed in to the centre and young Charlie was there on hand to fire his 2nd and the game winning goal past the keeper, as if to show Don how it's done. A well deserved and hard fought victory, which moved them back up to 2nd in the league.  Full Time: Greenock (2s) 2 - 3 Kelburne (5s).

Next Saturday 21st April Kelburne 5s travel to ON-X Linwood to play against Anchor in a local derby.

 

Bromac Kelburne Mens 1's Convincing Win vs Western Wildcats 4-1

On Saturday 14th April Kelburne mens 1’s faced a tough away fixture against their biggest rivals Western Wildcats. At this stage of the season every game for Kelburne is a must win game if they want to claim their 14th league title in a row. Wildcats, who are currently sitting 4th, were looking to pick up some points to keep the chasing pack at bay from that fourth play off spot. So an exciting game was on the cards. The first half got underway with both teams trying to create chances without much luck. Wildcats then had a purple patch, winning a corner which was dealt with by the Kelburne defence. The pressure continued and it paid off with a nice reverse stick finish to give the Wildcats the lead. This seemed to spur Kelburne into life, with a lot of ball possession and chances created. A few corners were won and some heroic defending by the Wildcats kept the score at 1-0 but Kelburne weren’t to be kept out. Some nice interplay between Neil McIntyre and Jack McKenzie gave the latter a chance on his reverse which he duly dispatched between the keeper’s legs. As the half drew to a close more chance were created by Kelburne but the Wildcats defence held strong. Kelburne started the second half with purpose and put the Wildcats players under pressure every time they had the ball. This paid off with a number of corners being won and chances created. Josh Cairns eventually gave Kelburne the lead with a low drag flick. Craig Morton added another with a good rebound finish from a corner and Michael Christie completed the scoring with a well worked corner routine that set up a simple tap in for the veteran. Goal keeper Rory Kerr also mopped up the odd attack from the Wildcats to give the paisley side a comfortable 4-1 victory. A solid second half performance will give the Paisley outfit confidence going into their next league fixture with Edinburgh Uni knowing that only victories will be good enough if the title is to be retained.

Pro-Life Kelburne Ladies 2s Beat Dundee Uni 4-1

On 25.3.18 - Even though we struggled for players, it was a great turn out. Thank you to Phoebe, Caoimhe and Lynne for stepping in, some great play from them. Some fabulous balls and runs from mid-field, Jen, Lucy, Dalia and Caoimhe, we had a great line of defence with Niamh, Amy, Drew and Abbie as our goalie and a very strong forward line with Jenny, Molly and Ambar. Half time we were sitting at 1-1 with Jenny Cuthbertson's goal.  As the second half continued Kelburne dominated the half, with numerous short corners that eventually lead to a goal from Jenny Cuthbertson and two fantastic power strikes from Drew Berry, to wrap up the points for Kelburne ladies 2s.

Bromac Kelburne Mens 1s Lose Out to Clydesdale on Penalties

On 18.3.18 : On Sunday  Kelburne travelled to Titwood to play there quarter final match in cold conditions. Kelburne started the game brightly with intent and purpose in there play causing afew threatening attacks. As the game grew on Clydesdale began to come into the game partly down to the drop in intensity of Kelburnes play allowing afew of the promising young players in the Clydesdale side to gain confidence. Kelburne were guilty of lowering standards throughout the team and were guilty of poor attacking decisions and struggled to find any rhythm in the latter part of the half. HT 0-0 As the 2nd half started you could see intent from both teams to come out and play knowing a semi final place was up from grabs. Kelburne winning an early short corner that they failed to convert in the early moments. With Kelburne pushing forward Kelburne always looked disjointed at the back with Clydesdale's counter attacks with both teams trying to find the opening goal. Both teams were finding themselves in both D's but not really working either goalkeeper and as the continued it looked more likely that it would need to be decided on penalties. As the game approached the final stages Josh Cairns was yellow carded for a tackle on the half way line and with about 5 minutes remaining Johnny Christie also found himself on the sidelines for reacting to a follow through tackle.

FT 0-0 - Game goes to pens Clydesdale winning 7-6 Disappointing result for Kelburne losing on pens who will now turn their intentions to what will be a big weekend in the league title chase. Kelburne will be playing Grange on Saturday at Glasgow Green 1.30 and Sunday 3.00 at Glasgow Green against Menzieshill in what will prove to be 2 testing encounters. Congratulations on Clydesdale advancing to the Scottish Cup Semi Finals. 

Pro-Life Kelburne Mens 5s Beat Uddingston 5s - 1-0

On 10.3.18 : The game started with the typical Scottish weather at its best. After a strong start youngster Charlie Feeney popped up at the back post to put Kelburne in the lead. Don Tervit also came very close after great play as Kelburne continued to have the best of the action. 30 minutes in and Don had a firm discussion with the opposition resulting in a 'conversation' with the umpire.

The second half had sustained Kelburne pressure which resulted in a series of short corners from which the Uddingston goalkeeper pulled off some excellent saves. One short corner resulted in a disputed disallowed goal from Dick Donaldson after good work in the D. It was a tight match for the remainder of the 2nd half but Kelburne held their nerve in the last minute as an Uddingston penalty corner came to nothing for a deserved 1 - 0 victory.

Kelburne 5s travel to Eastwood High School to play the rearranged match against Giffnock 2s on Monday 19th March with a 7-15pm pushback

Pro-Life Kelburne Ladies 2s Lose vs Ayr 0-1

On 17.3.18 - The women's 2nd XI travelled down to Ayr and played a challenging and intense match in freezing conditions. The girls started strong from the start and had a couple of chances in the first 15 minutes from Phillippa and Amber. The team developed and grew into the game and was able to get a few short corners. Unfortunately, we couldn't get any outcomes and half time came. After a great team talk everyone was eager for the second half. Holly and Cara had great runs down the line and create many chances for the strikers. After pushing high, Ayr hit on the counter attack which lead to a goal. None the less Kelburne kept their heads high and pushed for the equalizer. Great play from Anna and Connie kept a strong back line and helped to push the team forward. This lead to many opportunities however Kelburne were unable to put the ball in the back of the net. Great play from everyone who made the trip and we are looking forward to playing Sterling Wanderers next week.

Pro-Life Kelburne Mens 5s Beat Giffnock 2s 3-2

19.3.18 : On a baltic Monday evening the young Kelburne team took on a much changed Giffnock 2nd team. With the Kelburne boys having an excellent victory in the 1st league encounter of the season it was obvious that Giffnock were in no mood to feel similar pain. The game started with Kelburne trying to pass and move the ball nicely and Giffnock trying to force the ball straight through. As the 1st half continued Kelburne gained more control of the ball and a sweeping passing move down the right flank involving Scott Peters, Dick Donaldson and Jack Nelson led to the ball being fired across the ‘D’ for Arron Ohear to sweep into the goal at the back post. 1 nil to Kelburne and the boys were playing great. At the other end Giffnock were beginning to stretch the Kelburne defence and managed to gain a couple of short corners that were dealt with comfortably by the defenders. Young Fionn Wilson playing well in goals pulling off 2 good saves. Unfortunately a great strike from the top of the ‘D’ from their 3rd short corner lead to the equaliser. Nothing the young keeper could do about this one, the ball through the defence and past him before he could react! Throughout the 1st half and into the 2nd the ‘ever young’ Don Tervit tried to drive the boys on and made a number of defence splitting passes for Ross Gillies, Sam Hunt, Arron O'Hear and Jack Nelson to try and add to the score, but to no avail. As the 1st half was coming to an end spectator and part time clairvoyant Darren Wilson was just saying that now would be a good time to score, and that’s exactly what happened. Another fine passing move down the right lead to Kelburne’s 2nd goal. Young Rory Donaldson scoring his 1st senior goal with a spectacular effort. From almost the baseline he fired an unstoppable effort into the roof of the net. Half Time Giffnock 2s 1-2 Kelburne 5s The 2nd half started with a change of keeper for Kelburne with the even younger Rowan McClure taking over from the impressive Fionn.  Giffnock were the more dominant team at the start of the 2nd half and as a full team of adults they were beginning to add a more physical aspect to their game. One Giffnock forward attempted to run straight through Rowan in goal, but the young man showed no fear in holding his ground, stopping the attacker and saving the attempt at goal. Great effort! Giffnock did however manage to score again and make the score 2-2. With 15 minutes left in the game and Giffnock struggling to breakdown the young Kelburne team, the Giffnock tempers stared to flare and they started to argue amongst themselves. This gave Kelburne a lift and with renewed effort and vigour they closed down the Giffnock players at every opportunity, giving them no time on the ball to make a telling contribution. It’s was with this determination that Kelburne took the lead. Ross Gillies closed down the Giffnock centre half at pace forcing him to pass to their right back, young Ross continued his harassment of the defence by sprinting to close down the 2nd defender. The defender panicked and his attempted pass was intercepted by Dick who then drove towards the Giffnock goal. Seeing Don free to his left Dick passed to Don who didn’t disappoint. He rounded the 1st defender and as the 2nd defender tried to put Don into orbit he managed to slip the ball past the keeper and give Kelburne a 3-2 lead. 5 minutes left and with Giffnock really starting to put themselves about, the Kelburne team coolly controlled possession to finish the game with a victory. Throughout the game, a tremendous effort was put in by the Kelburne defence, particularly Callum Brown, Scott Peters & Callum Stewart. They were helped ‘a little’ by the elder Ewan Crawford and elder again Willie Hunt, but the young boys were outstanding. A great team performance on a freezing Monday night lead to another fine victory for this ever improving Kelburne 5th Team.  Final Score Giffnock 2s 2-3 Kelburne 5s

50 Year Anniversary Committee

In 2019 Kelburne will celebrate its 50th Anniversary. To mark this significant event in the clubs history we are planning a year of events which will recognise and celebrate the success of the club over the last 50 years. 

In order to begin planning the events we are looking to form a small committee who will coordinate the year of celebration. Contributions can be tailored to suit whatever time commitments you have available.

We would welcome representation from all areas of the club, past, present and future to allow us to showcase all elements of our great club.

Pro-Life Mens 5s Beat Helensburgh 3s 4-1

On 24.02.18 - With the sun shining and a large crowd gathering to watch a combination of youth and mature hockey players keen to keep up their charge to the top of the league, the Kelburne 5s were ready for their return to outdoor games.  Helensburgh could only muster 10 players, using 1 as a kicking back. The team used the extra player to their advantage with continued pressure on their D. Some great passing and movement showed that training hard lets you play hard with chance after chance, with their Kicking back keeping the scores nil-nil at HT.  After some encouragement in the HT chat, the boys were determined to turn the chances into goals and up pipped Aaron to score the first goal with some great build up play. Goals then came from Don, Dick and young Charlie Feeney proving that the game was out of Helensburgh's reach. A late consolation goal for Helensburgh was as a result of a fast counter attack which was only their second shot on target during the whole game. The boys hope to take this confidence in to next week's game.

Bromac Kelburne Mens 1s Beat Clydesdale 2-1

On 24.02.18 - Saturday saw Kelburne returning to outdoor matters with a home game against Clydesdale at Glasgow Green.  With Kelburne missing a few, starting with 11 players and one or 2 boys returning from injury during the week, Saturday could prove to be a trickier than usual game against a youthful Clydesdale team. The game started fairly slowly with both teams struggling to find any rhythm. It was Kelburne that began to create a few chances with Clydesdale looking to counter with a few of their promising youngsters in attack. It wasn't long before the paisley side scored from a short corner through Ben Peterson. In what was a quiet 1st half the paisley side went in 1-0. The 2nd half did see both teams create more.  Kelburne winning a number of corners but poor delivery and finishing resulted in a number of missed chances. At 1-0 it remained a tense time with the next goal being crucial.  Kelburne was to get that goal from Gary Maitles making it 2-0 after good interplay in midfield which resulted from a good pass finding Gary in the D to finish calmly.

With the game coming to a close the disjointed Kelburne defence allowed a Clydesdale forward to sneak in unmarked to finish past Rory Kerr. Not the most entertaining of games and performance levels will certainly need to be picked up across the park but the paisley side will be happy to get 3 points on the board and will take the 2-1 win and regroup ahead of a very challenging game at home against Menzieshill at Glasgow Green this coming Saturday.
