Kelburne Ladies' 2s Lose Out to Grange Ladies

On Saturday 22.9.18 - Kelburne had the better of the early exchanges but without creating any clear opportunities. The first chance of the game fell to grange however the outcome was unsuccessful and was saved by Lynne Houston before Kelburne cleared it, after a scramble in the D. The next period was an even contest with both teams creating chances and opportunities after good exchanges. The good period led to Kelburne gaining their first short corner but with no success. With the first half coming to a close, Grange picked up their first short corner but couldn’t get the shot on target. They had another attempt at goal but it was yet again saved by Lynne Houston. The second half Grange picked up another short corner but had no success. A shot at goal lead to another short corner for Grange again with no outcome. There was another short corner for Grange with another fabulous save by Lynne Houston. Grange scores 20 minutes into the second half from a short corner. Grange had numerous chances at short corners with no outcome. Dalia Stewart created a short corner for Kelburne with no goal however another short corner was given. There was some really good passage of play by Kelburne. A short corner was given for Kelburne with no success. A short was given to Grange and they managed to score within the last couple of minutes. The Final Score was 2-0 to Grange, however, the score did not reflect the actual game.

Kelburne Ladies 1s Beat Edinburgh Cala 1s 5-2

Saturday, September 8th saw the opening game of the season in National League Division 2 for the Kelburne Ladies 1s against Edinburgh Hockey Club Cala Ladies 1s. Having taken the opportunity to get some solid pre-season fitness and training under their belts during the summer break, the ladies were keen to get the new season underway. Head Coach, David Westwood, took the opportunity to introduce some new faces, with Holly Hendry and Philippa Saddler making promising debuts, alongside more established players. Kelburne took a little while to settle into the game and Cala looked the more dangerous team from the start, forcing Kelburne goalkeeper Emily Irving into action with some good saves. However, Cala’s eagerness saw them begin to make mistakes, fatally in the D which saw Kelburne win a penalty corner, stopped with precision by Catherine McLauchlan and converted through a reverse stick strike by midfielder Lucy Bliss. Bliss then converted her second with a drag flick at waist height leaving the goalie the only option of watching the ball fly past her. Cala quickly went onto the offensive and pulled one back much to the angst of the watching supporters. However, with a tackle on Drew Berry that saw her brought down in the box, opportunity presented itself and Berry calmly converted a penalty flick. Half time score 3-1 Kelburne.

Revived, a rejuvenated Cala again went into the offence and some frenetic action in the D saw an almost unavoidable deflection by the Kelburne defence, causing an own goal. The scoreline was quickly adjusted again however by Megan Ralph with a beautiful unmarked run and a strong strike to beat the goalkeeper, giving the Kelburne Ladies a little more breathing space as the match marched towards the full time whistle. The spectators were hungry for more and, with an encouraging cheer of “one more goal before we go home” thrown out from the stand, Jessie Cuthbertson took up the challenge and, in the dying seconds of the game, deftly slipped goal no.5 past the keeper! Final score Kelburne 5 - Cala Ladies 2

Noble Signs Kelburne Men's 2s Beat Ellon Men's 1s 6-1

On Sunday 16.9.18 the men's 2s played out a scrappy game in Aberdeen against Ellon mens 1s to begin their defence of the district cup. The game started slowly with Kelburne failing to threaten inside the opposition D. The deadlock was eventually broken with a neat finish from J.G Shepherd. Gary Brolly and Phil Nijsen chipped in with 2 impressive drag flicks to take the score to 3-0 heading into half time. Kelburne began the second half with the intentions of killing the game off early on. Callum McCaffer prodded the ball into the back of the net after a scramble in front of the Ellon goal. J-G scored his second of the game with a powerful reverse stick strike beyond the keeper. Ciaran Wilcox found himself at right place at the right time to tap in Kelburne's 6th all but ensuring the win. Ellon managed a late consolation from their only short corner of the game, a great strike past Logan McClure in goals. The 6-1 victory sees the Noble Signs Kelburne men's 2s into the next round of the cup as they hope to retain their trophy.

Pro-life Kelburne Ladies 2s vs Stirling Wanderers

On Saturday 15.9.18 - Superb play from around the pitch, the score never reflected the way that Kelburne played, putting up excellent defence and skillful play up and down the mucky park with admirable leads left Kelburne with a unfortunate score line.  1st half: Starting the first half, with confidence Kelburne had the first chance on goal, this was a great strike by Jen Morgan and just skimmed by the post, soon after Jen took a ball to the forearm and sat out for 5 mins to ensure there was no serious damage .  Stirling were high pressing and managed to sneak their way into the circle and that put them 1-0 up.  Stirling had another strike on goal, 2-0 up.  5 minutes later, despite disputes between the umpire and players, Stirling managed to make the score 3-0.  Stirling managed to squeeze in a short corner just before half time however it was well cleared by the defenders. 2nd half: Kelburne was still feeling confident going into the second half and managed to get 2 short corners in a row, unfortunately this had no effect to the score.  Kelburne had 5 more short corners but again there was no change to score.   Stirling managed to get another strike on target, but Lynne Houston made an excellent save.  Stirling managed to score twice within the space of a couple of minutes, putting the score 5-0.   There was strong defending and some formidable saves from Kelburne but unfortunately, persistence from Stirling managed to get another shot in the back of the net, score was 6-0   Throughout the game Kelburne managed to keep their heads and kept composure until the end.

Kelburne Ladies 3s Lose out to Loch Lomond in Cup Match

On Saturday 15.9.18 - Our young side had a confident start to their Cup game. It was great to have Jen Owen back in super form and creating lots of pressure in the opening minutes, linking up well with midfield. Kelburne looked confident with their first long corner but the resulting shot on goal was just wide. Kelburne’s young side continued to push forward with Morven and Eve maintaining a lot of possession in midfield. Good play up the wing created more chances with the ball being driven in hard but Kelburne were unlucky not to capitalise on these chances. With Carol and Fiona strong in defence, Loch Lomond failed to create many chances and their first short corner was quickly cleared. Abbie took the ball for a run up the right wing and after completing a ‘nutmeg’ she fired the ball across the D. A short corner followed which Jen struck well and a quick deflection was well saved by the GK. A short corner to Loch Lomond was quickly dealt with by our defence with Carol leading by example and clearing the ball to the halfway line. Kelburne continued pressing and another short corner was saved well by their GK. The team had great possession throughout the 1st half. At halftime the game remained scoreless and the seagulls were circling at this feast of Hockey. The 2nd half began with Lindsay being called into action with a good save. Kelburne continued to press with accurate, quick passing and a short corner needed the defence to send Jen’s shot wide of the goal. The team continued to link up well and great tackling by Charley on the wing created more possession for the young side. The defence held strong under sustained pressure with brave stops from Carol and Eve tracked back well to assist and clear the ball. Against the run of play Loch Lomond managed to penetrate the Kelburne defence and scored their first goal at close range. Loch Lomond took a lot of confidence from their goal and increased pressure but the ball was won back well in midfield. Another shot from Loch Lomond was saved well on the line by Lindsay in goal. Kelburne kept pushing up and won a short corner in the final few minutes of the game. Charley had an accurate and strong shot on goal bravely saved on the line. Loch Lomond quickly retained possession and a short corner was awarded in the last minute of the game which allowed Loch Lomond to score with a deflected shot. The game finished 2-0 to Loch Lomond but Kelburne yet again impressed all those watching by their tenacity and determination to control the game and drive forward at every opportunity. With her fantastic leadership and strength in defence Carol was a well deserved MVP 🎉

Kelburne Men's 4 & Men's 5s Battle it out in Kelburne Derby

On Saturday 15.9.18 - With the first Kelburne Derby of the season, it was pride and honour at stake along with 3 points for a victory. The 4s started well and opened the scoring early through Colin Fairbairn. Yet the 5s soon got back on level terms when Dick Donaldson level d from a Short Corner. Soon it was 2-1 to the 5s when Don Tervit followed up on another Short Corner. With both teams battling for midfield supremacy it was frantic but neither side could add to the score before half time. Kelburne 4’s Captain, Ryan Wood, changed things tactically for the second half. This seemed to work as they started strongly and were soon on level terms. Shaun Jardine-Malone finished off a slick Short Corner move. Soon it was 3-2 to the 4s as John Miller finished off a flowing move. With the 4s on top they made the pressure count with a fortuitous 4th when Colin got his 2nd of the match with a reverse sweep which took a deflection off a defender’s foot, this wrong footed the keeper. The 5s started to get back into the game, putting pressure on the 4’s defence. With a couple of minutes remaining Don got his 2nd making it 4-3. There was no further scoring with the 4s beating 5s in a close and hard fought match.

Kelburne Men's 3s Lose Out to Western 3s

On 8.9.18 - Kelburne men’s 3’s stepped on to the pitch with some familiar faces from the previous season and some new. Their first game of the season away to Western 3’s. Western took advantage of the pockets of space and were rewarded with a goal within the first few minutes and another goal within 10 minutes into the game. Kelburne reset with intentions to press and to put pressure on the strong Western side and received a short corner to which Phil Nijsen drag flicked the ball to the back of the net. Western pushed forward and received another goal. Final half time score: Western 3 - Kelburne 1.

Second half - Western put another 3 goals in the net and then Bob Martin picked the ball up at the top of the D and drove it in by an upright reverse to the bottom right back of the goal.

Pro-life Kelburne Men's 5s Draw vs Greenock Morton 2s

On 8.9.18 - The freshly promoted men’s 5th team began their first test of the new season against Greenock, the team they secured promotion against last season. Although missing Kelburne legend Dick Donaldson through injury, the 5s were proud to hand senior debuts to Andrew McGrane, Dylon Bradley and Nicholas Knox. The youthful Kelburne team recognised it would be unable to compete with the strong physical threat posed by the Greenock side and so instead knew they had to rely on their hockey ability to overcome this challenge. As expected Greenock began brightly and Kelburne struggled to match the physicality and intensity of a stronger Greenock side. After soaking up some early pressure the otherwise rock solid Kelburne back-line fell victim in the 9th minute to a loose ball at the top of the “D”. The ball was pounced upon by a Greenock forward who struck a powerful shot that took a wicked deflection off a Kelburne stick, wrong footing Fionn and sending an unstoppable shot into the roof of the net; 0-1.  Crucially Kelburne did not panic and gradually worked their way back into the game as the first half progressed. The young Kelburne players noticeably began to grow in confidence and some fine play down the left flank by Jared Bolland following an early break from a Greenock short corner set up by stalwart, Ewan Crawford led to pressure on the Greenock defence. Some tenacious work by Charlie Feeney then won Kelburne a free hit just outside their opponent’s “D”. Don Tervit played the ball quickly forcing Greenock into conceding the 5s first short corner of the match. The routine was executed perfectly and Tervit drove the ball home for the equaliser after 21 minutes; 1-1. The move that led to the goal was particularly pleasing to the coaching staff having spoken about using the early break to create opportunities before the match.  As the half wore on the Kelburne youngsters played some delightful hockey. Jack Nelson, Calum Jamieson, Charlie and Andrew were finding space behind the Greenock defence and neat passing play from the young midfielders (Tommy Austin, Rory Donaldson, Jared, Sam Hunt, Nicholas and Dylan) was putting the Greenock defence under pressure. Sam Hunt went close with a back stick drive from the edge of the “D” but the Greenock defence held strong through to half time. There was a new belief in the Kelburne side after the break and Kelburne followed on where they left off in the first, expertly marshalled by Don in the middle of the park. Kelburne won several short corners in the second half. The first was slipped left to Tommy whose reverse stick shot was unfortunately too high. Andrew won another corner. This time the slip was right but a slight misunderstanding between Don and Sam led to the chance passing by. The Kelburne flanks continued to press the Greenock defence and some excellent work down the left flank from Nicholas and the right by Rory helped keep the pressure on the Greenock “D”. Unfortunately however Kelburne could not find the breakthrough for the win that their play so richly deserved. Kelburne were ever wary of the pace and power of the Greenock team who looked to exploit Kelburne’s attacking style by hitting them on the break. This occasionally led to the need for some defensive work but the veteran defence of Willie, Ian, Ewan and Hamish held firm magnificently. Final score 1-1. With expectations high after last season's success, the step up in the standard of the higher league is always going to be a challenge however the team’s performance against Greenock demonstrates that this team has the ability and deserves to be playing at this level.  If the 5s can match and improve on this performance, then the league should hold no fears for them for the rest of the season.

Next week the Kelburne 4s and 5s meet at Glasgow Green with a 12 o’clock push back in the first of this season's derbies.

Noble Signs Kelburne Men's 2s Storming Victory Over Inverleith 2s 7-0

On 8.9.18 - As smooth as Chocolate for Kelburne men’s 2s - sponsored by Noble Signs and Print Kelburne, the men's 2s hammered seven past the post to show newly promoted Inverleith what the Men’s Regional League Division 1 is made of.  This was the result of a combination of short corners and fine finishing which was met with little resistance.  Stuart Robin was starting his 33rd season so the first half started with a strong, experienced team coupled with some youngsters.  Kelburne was soon 1-0 up with a deflection from Connor Bain.  This was met with a counter attacked by Inverleith who had their first shot on target, fantastic save by Logan McClure.  With lots of strong play at the away end, Kelburne got their first short corner, a lovely shot on goal by Euan Carmichael.  Kelburne 2-0.  A stick to the knee for Josh Cairns meant he sat out for the remainder of the first half.  Soon after, the ball hit an Inverleith foot inside the D - this led to Gary Brolly skimming just wide of the post.  Kelburne kept possession of the ball, working it from player to player, across the back which led to a great pass across goal from Adam Bain and a fantastic finish by JG Shepard.  Kelburne 3-0 up.  Half Time 3-0 Kelburne.

Kelburne had another shot on goal at the start of the second half, this was a sign of things to come and shortly afterwards Kelburne scored another goal, which was the result of a cracking pass from JG Shepard towards goal, with a first-time strike on target by Connor Bain.  Kelburne 4-0. Another short corner led to Inverleith’s keeper having to save a superb strike from Josh Cairns.  A well-executed shot by Craig Spiers added to the score and turned it into 5-0.  High press by Inverleith led to a unlucky foot, giving them a short corner which they could not hit the target due to excellent defending.  With not a lot of time left on the clock,  Kelburne managed to squeeze in 2 more goals, one was scored by JG Shepard and the other from Connor Bain.   Coach, Colin McClure and Captain, Mark Connor, were ecstatic with the team's performance - this sees them 2 points clear at the top of the league.  Well done Kelburne!   Next Game: Sat 15th September vs Edinburgh University 2s @ Glasgow Green.

Pro-life Kelburne Ladies 3s Lose Out vs Loch Lomond

On Saturday 8.9.18 at the GNHC

Impressive strong play from a side that consisted mainly of youngsters, some making their debut in senior hockey, which was held together by strong on-field coaching from Carol Feeney and Fiona McGrane.  Despite numerous, positive attacks on goal and fantastic tackles kelburne was unable to score in the first half, however, an impenetrable defensive barrier saw that Loch Lomond Ladies were unable to score either.  Half time 0:0  About 10 minutes into the second half, the Kelburne youngsters drove the ball up towards the goal with some impressive play across the pitch, with a twirl inside the D followed by a shot on goal, by Lucy MacMillian, saw Kelburne take a well-deserved lead.  However, this was short lived when Loch Lomond managed to sneak in two goals within 5 minutes.  Unfortunately, although Kelburne were fearless against a more experienced team they were unable to come back and the game finished 1-2.  The team showed outstanding enthusiasm, effort and had more energy than chocolate throughout the entire game, they were unlucky not to come out on top.   Great Hockey – well done girls!  The score really was not a true reflextion of the game.  Next game is a cup match against Loch Lomond again on Saturday at 1.30pm, GNHC.

Kelburne Men's 4s Win Against Uddingston 4s 1-0

On Saturday 8.9.18 - The Men's 4s started their season with an early push back against Uddingston 4s at Uddingston. The team were looking to produce the same performance that saw them win 1-0 at the same stage last season. The team started strong with some solid play from the back giving a platform for the midfielders and forwards to push on. There was several early chances for Colin Fairbairn and a narrow miss from the first short corner of the game from newbie John Lennox. Kelburne continued to press forward with the Uddingston keeper making several good saves before Colin Fairbairn produced a save from the keeper but Callum Stewart was in a fantastic position to stroke in his first 4s goal to give Kelburne an early lead. Uddingston started to apply some pressure with Lewis Berry producing a fantastic double save to keep Kelburne ahead in the game. This meant Kelburne took a lead in to half time. The second half began in the same way as the first with Kelburne pressing to try and get a second and give some breathing space. Uddingston held strong with the keeper continuing to make some fantastic saves. Kelburne continued to apply the pressure with some great play across the midfield but James Currie could not capitalise from several short corners. Kelburne were able to see out the game to record their first win and get off the mark. Man of the Match was Chris Nelson with an assured performance in midfield.

Next week the 4s play the Men's 5s in the big derby at Glasgow Green (12noon pb), one not to be missed!

Pro-life Kelburne Ladies 2s Beat Ayr Ladies 2-0

On Saturday 1.9.18 - The Kelburne Ladies 2s stepped on to the pitch at Glasgow Green for their first game of the new season against Ayr.  With a few new faces in the team and many experienced players mixed in Kelburne dominated the play. Going out fast from the first whistle the girls pushed their opponents hard, passing the ball swiftly round the pitch. Opportunities opened up with Kelburne getting into the 'D' and getting the ball on target only to be denied by the keeper. The first half ended 0-0. After a pep talk at half time and a wee sweet snack courtesy of Pheobe (GK coach) the girls were ready to go out and push even harder.  The pre-season fitness training started to pay off as Ayr started to tire more opportunities opened up and mistakes forced. Giving Kelburne a well earned short corner, with a swift push out and clean strike at goal the keeper got a kicker to the ball but Phillippa pounced on the rebound to put the ball in the back of the goal. Kelburne continued to dominate working well as a team, moving the ball well around the pitch. With 10 minutes to go another short corner was awarded against Ayr, after a brief discussion the girls step up to the edge of the 'D'. Pushed out to top 'D' the ball was slipped to the right where the ball was then pushed back to the penalty spot for Ellie Houston to slot the ball home.

Young Kelburne Ladies 3s Lose Out to Strong Ferguslie Side

On Saturday 1.9.18

A promising start to the season for the young team supported well by Carol Feeney and Emma Ryan in both attack and defence.  Although they suffered a 6-2 defeat they demonstrated great determination and good link-up play throughout the game. Ferguslie were on the attack immediately but Kelburne maintained a strong defence.  Kelburne’s 1st chance came with Abbie Irvine and Charley Austin linking-up well but Charley’s shot was just wide.  This was quickly followed by a shot from Isla Taylor which was saved on the line. The resulting short corner allowed Emma to unleash a powerful strike for Kelburne’s first goal. This was quickly followed by a short corner to Ferguslie and after being impeded in the box they scored from the awarded penalty flick. Another short corner to Ferguslie created their next goal.  Ferguslie were driving forward confidently but Lindsay Greenlees was heroic in goal.  Ferguslie had their 3rd goal when a long ball was sent from defence to the waiting attacker at the goal. Carol then single handedly defended against 2 approaching attackers and Morven McEwan and Jessica MacKenzie. Pressure from Kelburne created another short corner and yet another impressive strike from Emma gave Kelburne their 2nd goal. As the first half drew to a close a green card was issued to Ferguslie for persistent stick tackling. The first half ended Kelburne 2 Ferguslie 3. A lively 2nd half started with a Ferguslie attack but Lindsay stood up to the challenge with a couple of decisive saves as she ran out like a rampaging penguin! Another short corner for Ferguslie allowed them to add to their score with a close range shot.  Kelburne continued to create chances through fantastic link up play in midfield and a resulting short corner passed across was just wide. Ferguslie scored once more from a long ball with the attacker in place at the goal ready to strike. Carol pushed forward and linked up well with Rebecca Feeney to pressure their defence... a lovely mother / daughter moment!! A further Kelburne short corner was well saved by their GK and a shot from Rebecca was saved by the defence. Another green card was issued to Ferguslie in the last few minutes of the game as Kelburne continued to press. The team played well throughout the game and show fantastic promise for the season ahead with the attitude and determination they maintained throughout the game against a very strong and experienced side. Jessica was a well deserved MVP for her hard work and tenacity in midfield.  Next week this young side face Loch Lomond Ladies at the GNHC, 1.30pm on 8.9.18 - come along and support them.

Noble Signs Kelburne Men's 2s Beat Clydesdale 2s 4-2

On Saturday 1.9.18 - Kelburne Men's 2s vs Clydesdale 2s

The Start of the new league season for the 2s, saw them head to Titwood with several new faces after 5 youngsters stepped-upto  the first squad, with captain Mark and coach Colin looking to claim 3 points. After a good preseason the guys started the match in control with everyone eager to get their first touch of the ball and it wasn't long before Mark Connor popped up in the D to score the first goal of the game within 7 mins!  Clydesdale tried to force an equaliser had chances in the D but shrewd defending and counter attacking allowed for the  marauding Connor Bain to score 2 goals within 10 mins.  HT 3-0 Kelburne. The 2nd half proved a more even match with chances a both ends however the award of a Short corner lead to a Dale goal, some great leads by the forwards saw Alan Brenner come close with a body on the line slide saved by Dales GK, a series of Short Corners for Dale led to a 2nd goal. The game was put to bed when a Kelburne Short Corner was converted by Fraser Scott. And a superb Dave from youngster Logan McClure prevented a 3rd goal late on.  Next week sees the squad play Inverleith 2s at GNHC 12.00.  Get along to support the guys.

You are hereby invited to attend an Extraordinary General Meeting and AGM of Kelburne Hockey Club to be held at the Clubhouse in Paisley on Monday 6th August at 7.45pm prompt - the EGM has been called for the purpose of considering and, if thought fit, passing a change to Sections 12 & 13 of the Kelburne Hockey Club Constitution.  

Please note - The proposed changes are that we, the club members, would like to change our Financial year end from December 31st to March 31st and to change the date of the club AGM from April to August.  All members, including juniors and social members, are invited to attend both the EGM and AGM, however, only full senior members are allowed to vote.

The Proposal will be voted on by the membership with a simple 'majority vote' considered. 

The AGM will follow at 8pm.
