Pro-Life Kelburne Mens 2s Beat Dundee Wanderers 2s

On Sunday 22.10.17 - Kelburne made the trip up the A9/A90 to Dundee for a Sunday lunch time cup game. Coming off the back of a well needed league win Kelburne were more than keen to keep the good form going. 

First 5 mins started off well for Kelburne keeping most of the ball moving Dundee from side to side. Their dominance was rewarded with a short corner (SC), when ball was played down the line from M.Connor to JG. Shepherd who then helped it on to S.Singh who's great individual skilled helped draw a foul inside the D. 

The SC was pulled out quickly and with an improvised routine with a misplaced shot found B.Martin stick who tucked it away into the goal. 

0-1

This was a wake up call for Dundee who now started to get into the game. Moving the Kelburne defence by stringing a few passes together they were rewarded when an attack down the right hand side found itself inside the D with a shot on target hit a Kelburne foot behind the keeper. Penalty !  Penalty converted high into keeper's right and into the corner, 1-1.

It took a couple of minutes for Kelburne to get back into the game, playing the ball round the back with P.Nijsen, C.McClureand R.Morgan dictating the pace of the ball it wasn't long before Kelburne were rewarded again with a SC.. This time there was no mistake and was clinically put away by a never-ending runner veteran of the 2XI, Ewan Carmichael, whose shot from the top D was low and hard into the corner and Kelburne got their lead back, 2-1..

The 1st half was drawing to a close but not before Dundee got their 2nd equalizer by being given a gift from the Kelburne defender, who I will leave nameless (no.42!), the left back was getting closed down in the corner and seemingly to just give it to the forward who greatly received this gift and converted with no mistake.

The 2nd half started slowly with Kelburne having the majority of possession. Some good passing in and out of defence with F.Noble and C.Smith making some great leads and passes between them. The breakthrough however came from Dundee who found themselves in the D and with the help of confusion the defence from E. Carmichael and JG. Shepherd as well as M. Retson in goals, the ball seemed to find its way into the goal and Dundee took the lead for the first time in the game out of absolutely nothing, 3-2.

10 mins left to play - Kelburne's run in the cup was seriously at risk. With a quick set up from a 16 that Dundee weren't ready for the ball was played to the left to M.Connor who played the ball up the line for B.Martin who played a nice square ball to C.Bain who used his pace to get past his marker and suddenly found himself 1vs1 against the keeper and managed to just finish the ball underneath the keeper's pads and slotted the ball home to make it 3-3!

Kelburne wasn't settling for the draw and with penalties within 2 mins of getting the 3rd, they found themselves in front for the 3rd time in the game - with a great ball down the line from F.Noble who passed to C.Speirs who then passed to R.McClure in space on the right. With great awareness of his other teammates made a first time pass inside to Connor.Bain with the lead from the midfield again using his pace to get himself 1vs1 against the keeper, this time going on to his 'favourable' reserve stick side sending the ball into the goal and Kelburne through to the next round of the cup.  FT 4-3 to Kelburne.

With so many of the 2nd XI regulars being unavailable for this game, due to the half term break and work commitments, Club Kelburne showed the depth of its club again today by including a few new guys making their 2nd XI debut (F.Noble, C.Smith and C.Speirs), and even coach C.McClure played too!  They all stepped up in what was a big game for the paisley side. 

It wasn't the easiest of games but the Kelburne 2s showed their grit and determination, as always, and this got them through to a win.

Next week it's back to league action with an away game against Uddingston 2s.

Bromac Kelburne Mens 1s Beat Dundee Wanderers 6-1

on 14.10.17 - After returning from the EHL weekend in Barcelona it was back to domestic action with a tough game facing them in Dundee. Starting slow Kelburne went behind in the opening few minutes with poor defending letting in the wanderers forward to work his way along the baseline to score past young Logan McClure making his debut in goal. From then Kelburne appeared to up the tempo of there play with chances being created and working the opposing keeper. Johnny Christie then levelled scoring with a smart finish into the roof of the net and minutes later Chris Caldwell put the paisley side infront to go into half time 2-1 up. The 2nd half was all Kelburne with a lot of attacking pace going forward with the only chances wanderers having being the odd counter attacks. The wanderers keeper was certainly getting worked and after the restart Jack Mckenzie had a lovely finish disallowed which was questionable. That certainly didn't dent his confidence as he was soon on the scoresheet making it 3-1. More goals were to follow from Neil McIntyre having a good game in midfield, Adam Bain finishing from a flowing move down the left wing and finally Johnny Christie from the penalty spot to conclude matters at 6-1.

Kelburne now move onto a double header weekend, travelling to Edinburgh to play Grange in what will be a competitive affair with 3 points on the minds of both sides. Sunday finds Kelburne playing in the knockout stages of the Scottish cup at home in a game they will feel confident in advancing to the latter stages of the competition.

Pro-Life Kelburne Mens 2s Lose Out to Clydesdale 2s

On Saturday 14.10.17 - Clydesdale 2XI 3-1 Kelburne 2XI

Kelburne 2s made the short trip to Titwood to face local rivals Clydesdale with a full squad of 16 players, a luxury unheard of last year. Regular goalkeeper Logan McClure had been called up to make his 1st XI debut, but Matthew Retson stepping in to deputise.

Kelburne started brightly, and pushed their hosts into their own half, having lots of the ball without creating many clear cut chances. Eventually this wastefulness and Clydesdale’s expansive tactics brought the Glasgow side back into the game, and they were able to force a number of short corners, the first was dealt with by a combination of number 1 runner Ewan Carmichael, with Retson saving the rebound. Five minutes later, another short corner was fired home to put Clydesdale 1-0 up. In response, Kelburne forced some short corners of their own. A training ground routine confused the defence, and allowed a clear shot at goal; unfortunately the resultant strike was lifted dangerously, and disallowed. Further chances were fashioned, but poor touches, and decision making prevented any meaningful action. The half finished 1-0 Clydesdale.

A team talk from coach McClure and a rallying cry from veteran Stuart Robin should have given Kelburne fresh impetus in the second half, however poor ball pace, decision-making and marking allowed Clydesdale to create further chances. Two were converted. A desperate tackle resulted in the rebound falling to an unmarked attacker at the back post, he was able to control and convert. A turnover of possession was punished as Clydesdale won, then converted a short corner with 20 minutes to go.

            This, eventually, seemed to spark Kelburne into life; Mark Connar won the ball, and passed to Robin, his thorough ball allowed Ross Wallace to set Conner Bain up n a shooting position, his shot going past the near post. Next up Kelburne provided a candidate for miss of the season. Great skill by Rory McClure bamboozled his marker (to shouts of "that's my boy" from the coach), allowing him to pick out Phil, his clever pass eliminated the goalkeeper and unfortunately it was also too quick for the forward standing free at the back post, who was unable to react as the ball rolled off the pitch to accompanying cries of anguish. Undeterred by this Kelburne continued to press for a goal.  Fraser Scott won the ball at the back and fed Ross McPherson, he beat two players before playing in Andrew Duff who took a heavy touch and the ball was lost. Good interplay down the left from Kelburne finished with Duff passing to Mike Jones in time and space in the centre of the pitch, his driven cross too quick for the forward who only needed a touch.

Eventually Kelburne got the goal their play deserved, Duff found the onrushing Wallace, his drive towards goal halted by the sprawling keeper, Jones was able to gather the rebound and fire home. 3-1.

            This was too little, too late for Kelburne who made the trip home lamenting a lack of intensity and poor decision making, they aim to put this right with a Dundonian Double header this weekend, Menzieshill 1.30@ Glasgow Green, then away to Dundee Wanderers on Sunday.

Pro-Life Kelburne Ladies 2s Draw vs Ayr : 1-1

On 14.10.17 - After a rocky start during the week, with many of our squad players away on a hockey tour with their school, we managed to convince some of our rising stars of the 3rd XI and even some of our wonderful experienced players to step up and represent the 2s vs Ayr. Our captain/coach Jen Morgan gave us all the information we needed to go out and play our socks off and that's exactly what we did!  It was a hard physical game with lots of possession for both teams but is was Kelburne that managed to break the deadlock first. After a quick time out, due to an injury to an Ayr player, and a quick chat abut positioning Emma Ryan found herself winning a foul in Ayr's 23 - she played a fast pass to Jen at top D who pinged it back post for one of our young debutantes, Ambar Hendry, to slide it past the keeper. A great reaction from the crowd spurred us on.  Unfortunately, a small lapse in concentration allowed Ayr to get a short corner and with a practice swing they squeezed it in back post. Half time 1-1

The second half started with great determination and a belief that we could hold on and push for the win. Unfortunately we just couldn't get it past the keeper, even with some fantastic play all over the park we just couldn't get it in the goal. Our defensive line up lead by Nicola (Cookie) Brown did a fantastic job denying Ayr and chance of pulling ahead with special well done to Grace Cowan who played superbly at left back in her first game for the 2s. With only 2 subs we were all exhausted by the end of the game but so proud of the great performance put in by all the girls. A massive thanks to the 3's girls who stepped up and showed what amazing talent we have coming through our Ladies section and congrats to Holly Hendry winning Most Valuable Player.

Pro-Life Kelburne Mens 4s Lose Out to Helensburgh 1s

On 7.10.17 - The game started and Kelburne got a shot on goal from the top D by John Miller after a pass from Gary Brolly but the shot was saved by the Helensburgh goalie. Next Helensburgh scored with a shot from about the penalty spot for there first goal at roughly 10 minutes in. After that, Kelburne won two short corners in a row although neither one resulted in a goal. Helensburgh then got a shot on goal which was well defended but they followed up and scored again. They then won a short corner which was saved by Captain Ryan Wood on the line with an impressive mid-air stop. Shortly after the half-time whistle went. Straight away at the start of the second half Helensburgh quickly got three back to back goals to put the game out of reach for Kelburne. Helensburgh then got a short corner which came to nothing although they quickly followed this up with another goal. Kelburne then got a short corner but the shot missed the goal. Helensburgh got a final two goals before the final whistle brought a disappointing game to a close.

Next week Kelburne 4's travel to Giffnock with a 3pm pushback.

Pro-Life Kelburne Ladies 2s Draw vs Perth Ladies 1s

On Saturday 7.10.17 - Kelburne dominated most of the game but was unfortunate to lose goals due to fast breaks. There were 2 green cards given to Perthshire during the match.

(half time 2-0) However, a strong 2nd half for the Kelburne ladies showing goals from Phillipa Saddler and a terrific short corner from Ellie Houston brought the Kelburne ladies level. Kim Crawford then had a terrific field goal bringing them to 3-2, but due to a lack of concentration Perthshire managed to get another goal evening-up the final score to be 3-3.

Pro-life Kelburne Mens 2s Draw vs Edinburgh Uni

On 30.9.17 ..a day that started with the heat from the sun and Edinburgh Uni unnecessarily watering the pitch.!  Kelburne pushed back to what would be a high intensity first half, especially on the 15th minute mark when Andrew Duff was shown a green for a tackle within Kelburne's twenty-five. The next green card was shown to Edinburgh Uni on the 21st minute just before Kelburne had another player deducted, this time JG being shown a five minute yellow.  With the cards being dished out so early on, it meant tackles had to be spot for the rest of the match.  The first half of hockey was end to end with Edinburgh Uni having the better chances and Kelburne only really showing there physical presence. 

With the first half goaless and the sun still beating down, the game just continued much as it had been in the first half.  That was until roughly 15 minutes into the second half when the heavens opened causing terrential rain and hail that pounded the pitch.  The weather didn'taffect the intensity of the game and both sides were striving for a goal.  Finally a goal came as the sun was reappearing, but for the opposition. Edinburgh Uni scoring a corner that Kelburne felt was wrongfully given.  With Kelburne 1-0 down we increased the pressure on the Uni's defence resulting in a penalty flick being awarded roughly 5 minutes after the first goal. With Alan Walker gaining the PF he stepped up to the plate but flicked off target and hit the post. However, the miss of the PF didn't cause a drop in pressure.  With around 5 minutes remaining,  Kelburne were pushing hard for thee equalizer, missing many opportunities before Will Adams deflected a pass in the D, received from  outside the twenty-five, and past the goalkeeper. With the game 1-1 there was still plenty of time for either team to claim a win.  Edinburgh Uni got a penalty corner with just under a minute left of play but managed to miss it allowing the game to end with 1-1 draw.

The Bromac Kelburne Men's 1st XI are training hard and putting in the last preparations for this weekend's Euro Hockey League in Barcelona.

Pro-Life Kelburne Mens 5s Draw vs Helensburgh 3s

On 30.9.17 - The young Kelburne 5s development team headed to Helensburgh for the second time this season having drawn 2-2 with their 2s a few weeks earlier. Helensburgh started well taking the game to Kelburne and creating a few half chances as the Kelburne team started slowly. And it wasn't too long before a Helensburgh player sneaked in at the back post to give the home team the lead. This seemed to waken up the Kelburne players as they began to pass the ball about and create some chances. On 3 occasions youngster Tommy Austin linked up with Rory Donaldson who found himself in space in the Helensburgh D. The first 2 occasions Rory snatched at the ball and his chance was gone but on the third occasion the Helensburgh keeper had to pull off a good save at his near post. Kelburne now were on the front foot with only a couple of Helensburgh breakaways to contend with the goal their play deserved eventually came from Don Tervit when he fired home from an acute angle. As the half came to a close both teams tried to get the upper hand but the score remained at 1-1 HT Helensburgh 3s 1-1 Kelburne 5s The second half started with Kelburne in control and it would stay that way for almost all of the 2nd half. Helensburgh hit on the counter attack but on the whole were being forced back by some good play from the Kelburne youngsters. Shots from Sam Hunt and Aaron O'Hear missed the target or forced the Helensburgh keeper into good saves. A rare Helensburgh break was bravely saved by youngster Rowan McClure in goals and he quickly followed up with a second save kicking the ball clear. A sublime bit of skill by Fergus, when surrounded by 3 Helensburgh players, allowed him to somehow find his way into the area and his shot narrowly missed the target. As so often happens Kelburne were caught out by a sucker punch with 15 minutes to go. A break down the right hand side and the resultant shot was bravely saved by Rowan but unfortunately the ball fell to the Helensburgh player who made no mistake. Rowan was injured during the goal and had to leave the pitch with Peter Robertson taking over as kicking back. Kelburne continued to push forward looking for an equaliser. Several chances fell to the team but a little more composure was required and they could not get that elusive goal. Finally, with 2 minutes to go, veteran Don Tervit skipped into the area and past a couple of players and slotted the ball home. It was a thoroughly deserved goal but the team will be disappointed not to have won. All the youngsters and the not so young deserve credit for battling to the end which is becoming a trait of this team.

FT Helensburgh 3s 2-2 Kelburne 5s Next week Kelburne 5s play Giffnock 2s at Glasgow Green with a 12 o'clock pushback searching for their first victory.

Bromac Kelburne Mens 1s Beat Hillhead

On Sunday 1.10.17

The second game of the weekend was played out in poor conditions at GHK. Kelburne looked to put the disappointing draw from Saturday behind them and get back to winning ways. Again playing without their coach the team looked in the mood from the start. A long ball into the Hillhead circle seen a diving Chris Caldwell send his deflection just an inch or two over the bar. Some quick passing around the defence allowed Kelburne to win their first corner of the game. A well executed routine was finished by Mike Nicol, the defender sent the keeper the wrong way allowing him to give the team the lead. The team again played some very good hockey and created some good chances. Hillhead typically looked to hit on counter with long ball hockey which was well handled by the defensive play from the team. The second goal came from Johnny Christie, some fast attacking play was finished in style by the striker who had just about managed to see the ball through his rain soaked specs. The game was going to plan until a ball played from outside the circle hit two kelburne sticks and evaded the kelburne keeper. Both umpires seemed to miss this and awarded a goal to Hillhead.

The game began to get a bit heated and the interval came at the perfect time to cool things off. The second half started and kelburne couldn't get a grip on the game. Hillhead seemed to find space too easily and with the game becoming tennis like found space in the 'D' and levelled up. Right back Gary Maitles was the next to go close with an uncharacteristic dive to try deflect the ball into the net, unfortunately his defensive mentality seemed to kick in and he cleared the ball of the Hillhead goal. A series of corners were won and wasted by Kelburne, Ben Peterson on another day could have walked away with 4 or 5 to his name. The forward had a difficult Sunday. Kelburne eventually found the 3rd through Chris Nelson, the veteran midfielder won the game with a simple tap in that even he couldn't miss. With minutes remaining Kelburne looked to keep control of the ball and not allow Hillhead any opportunities. With a win and 3 points the main aim the team was successful but improvements are needed going forward.

The squad now look forward to one last training session on Tuesday before traveling to Barcelona on Wednesday to play in this year's EHL.

Well done to the South West Girls in the U16s & U18s Inter-districts

Well done to all the players who took part in the U16s & U18s Girls' Inter-districts this weekend. It was a tough tournament in some challenging weather conditions but the South West girls fought hard.

The U16s made their way to the semi finals and were just pipped to bronze coming out 4th overall;

The U18s battled it out throughout a tough tournament coming 5th overall.

Bromac Kelburne Mens 1s Draw vs Menzieshill

On 30.9.17 Kelburne headed up to Dundee for a late afternoon pushback, knowing that they were in for a tough game. Menzieshill have always been challenging at the top of the table in the last few years and are always tricky opponents. The game started out very scrappy with neither team able to stamp authority on the match. About 20 minutes into the game and Kelburne began to play their normal attacking hockey and this created chances to take the lead. The breakthrough finally came when a great mazy run from Adam Bain, who cut inside from the left beating hill defenders, created space in the D.  The ball broke to youngster Finn Halliday who passed the ball across goal for Michael Christie to tap the ball home! 1-0 Kelburne. The half ended with no further chances.

The second half started very much like the first. Both teams struggling to control the game. Menzieshill created some goal scoring chances and won a couple of short corners which Kelburne were able to keep out. Then a nice move down the right hand side led to Chris Nelson firing a pass towards the D and evaded all the hill defenders fell to Johnny Christie who calmly slotted the ball past the keeper to make it 2-0. The game turned shortly after with menzieshill chasing the game Kelburne fell into their shell and lost their attacking play. This resulted in conceding far too much space for menzieshill to attack and led to them winning too many corners. This cost Kelburne with goals coming from short corners with around 15 minutes to go and then with only 3 minutes left. Even in those 3 minutes Kelburne were able to create a couple of short corner opportunities but were unable to convert. Game finished 2-2. A disappointing result for the burne who hope to bounce back against Hillhead on Sunday.

Pro-Life Kelburne Ladies 2s Beat St Andrew's Uni 6-2

On 23.9.17 : The Kelburne Ladies 2nd XI played with high intensity, determination and skill from the moment the first whistle blew.  Holly Hendry dribbled with the ball past the whole of the opposition and fired a shot on target within the first 10 seconds of the match and this foreshadowed the high level of game which was to follow. Kelburne had the vast majority of the possession within the first half with many key players such as Laura and Kelly skillfully passing the ball around the St Andrew's players linking the play right from the defensive line into the attacking 25. Several short corners were won in this half with several goals scored as a result. Jenny Cuthbertson had a particularly impressive goal won from a short corner where she neatly tapped the ball mid air into the top left corner of the net. Other goals such as Kim's and Laura's were won from open play in the first half. St Andrew's came back in the second half much stronger and with great determination after the half time team talk. And this unfortunately lead to 2 goals being scored against Kelburne. However the Kelburne Ladies refused to let their heads go down and kept the communication and positivity on the pitch high with great directional calls coming from Cookie, the goalie, at the back to ensure the team's structure remained strong.

At the end of the match Kelburne deservingly came out on top winning 6-2 and look foreword to bring the same level of skill and intensity into their next match.

Young 'Team West' steals Silver in the U16s Boys' Inter-districts

Results from this weekend's U16s & U18s Boys' Inter-Districts

It was a well-fought tournament for 'Team West' U16s gaining 3 clear wins and a draw vs East. Team West took Silver and narrowly missed out on 1st place by goal difference (No Final).  A great tournament with some very promising youngsters!

Very well played to our Young Kelburne U16s Stars, the 4 amigos, for their outstanding performance throughout the tournament, we're all very proud!

The U18s West Boys had a good tournament and came 2nd overall.

Next weekend sees the U16s & U18s Girls' Inter District.
