Young Kelburne Ladies 3s Lose Out to Strong Ferguslie Side

On Saturday 1.9.18

A promising start to the season for the young team supported well by Carol Feeney and Emma Ryan in both attack and defence.  Although they suffered a 6-2 defeat they demonstrated great determination and good link-up play throughout the game. Ferguslie were on the attack immediately but Kelburne maintained a strong defence.  Kelburne’s 1st chance came with Abbie Irvine and Charley Austin linking-up well but Charley’s shot was just wide.  This was quickly followed by a shot from Isla Taylor which was saved on the line. The resulting short corner allowed Emma to unleash a powerful strike for Kelburne’s first goal. This was quickly followed by a short corner to Ferguslie and after being impeded in the box they scored from the awarded penalty flick. Another short corner to Ferguslie created their next goal.  Ferguslie were driving forward confidently but Lindsay Greenlees was heroic in goal.  Ferguslie had their 3rd goal when a long ball was sent from defence to the waiting attacker at the goal. Carol then single handedly defended against 2 approaching attackers and Morven McEwan and Jessica MacKenzie. Pressure from Kelburne created another short corner and yet another impressive strike from Emma gave Kelburne their 2nd goal. As the first half drew to a close a green card was issued to Ferguslie for persistent stick tackling. The first half ended Kelburne 2 Ferguslie 3. A lively 2nd half started with a Ferguslie attack but Lindsay stood up to the challenge with a couple of decisive saves as she ran out like a rampaging penguin! Another short corner for Ferguslie allowed them to add to their score with a close range shot.  Kelburne continued to create chances through fantastic link up play in midfield and a resulting short corner passed across was just wide. Ferguslie scored once more from a long ball with the attacker in place at the goal ready to strike. Carol pushed forward and linked up well with Rebecca Feeney to pressure their defence... a lovely mother / daughter moment!! A further Kelburne short corner was well saved by their GK and a shot from Rebecca was saved by the defence. Another green card was issued to Ferguslie in the last few minutes of the game as Kelburne continued to press. The team played well throughout the game and show fantastic promise for the season ahead with the attitude and determination they maintained throughout the game against a very strong and experienced side. Jessica was a well deserved MVP for her hard work and tenacity in midfield.  Next week this young side face Loch Lomond Ladies at the GNHC, 1.30pm on 8.9.18 - come along and support them.

The Start of the new league season for the 2s, saw them head to Titwood with several new faces after 5 youngsters stepped-upto  the first squad, with captain Mark and coach Colin looking to claim 3 points. After a good preseason the guys started the match in control with everyone eager to get their first touch of the ball and it wasn't long before Mark Connor popped up in the D to score the first goal of the game within 7 mins!  Clydesdale tried to force an equaliser had chances in the D but shrewd defending and counter attacking allowed for the  marauding Connor Bain to score 2 goals within 10 mins.  HT 3-0 Kelburne. The 2nd half proved a more even match with chances a both ends however the award of a Short corner lead to a Dale goal, some great leads by the forwards saw Alan Brenner come close with a body on the line slide saved by Dales GK, a series of Short Corners for Dale led to a 2nd goal. The game was put to bed when a Kelburne Short Corner was converted by Fraser Scott. Pro-life Kelburne Men's 2s Storm to Victory in Scottish Cup Finals vs Grange

SCOTTISH CUP FINALS - MEN'S DISTRICT CUP FINAL

Saturday 5th May 2018 at Glasgow National Hockey Centre.

The last game of the season for the Men's 2s saw them take to a sunny Glasgow National Hockey Centre for the District Cup Final.  In front of a large home crowd the team led by Stuart Robin, in the absence of Captain Mark Connor, hoping to get some silverware after finishing 4th in Regional 1. The guys started off strong and determined to get the first goal.  Youngster Niall Taylor (Scotland U16's Performance) scooped the ball away from two fallen Grange players keeping it in play and stormed up the wing to a sprinting Alan Walker who took a shot but the ball went wide.  Soon after the first goal came with great link up play between Finn  Galloway and Rory McClure, allowing Rory to score his first goal of the game.  Grange pushed for an equalizer and shortly afterwards earned a short corner from the left side of the D, which they slotted home past Goalkeeper Logan McClure (Scotland U16's) to draw the game level. This only caused Kelburne to step up a gear and it was one way traffic with Rory and Finn linking up before half time to score another goal each. The whole team dominated in midfield with Ross, Ewan, Hutchy and Alan linking in with all the forwards and overlapping runs from Connor Bain, Fraser Scott and Adam McInnes as full backs. Youngsters Niall, Ciaran and Jackson all played their parts along with the more experienced Stuart, Duff and JG. The second half saw the Kelburne Forwards run amok with the Grange defence. Then a loss ball in the Kelburne half was secured by Adam who picked out a 50m pass to Andrew Duff who spotted Rory in the D who calmly lifted the ball over a rushing GK on his reverse stick to secure his hat trick and effectively sealed the game for Kelburne.  Grange chasing the game then withdrew their GK and opted for a kicking back, only to give away Penalty Stroke which was swiftly slotted away by Finn, making it 5-2. Youngster Cameron McIntyre and a change of Goalies saw young Matthew Reason enter the field for the last portion of the game.  Retson pulling off some unorthodox saves eventually conceding a drag flick from a resulting Short Corner, proving just to be a consolation prize for Grange however. The cup was collected by Stuart Robin and his young boy on what proved to be a great family day for the team and the club. Here's to next season and the whole team are now looking forward to the club dinner 19th May at the Glynhill hotel.  A big shout out to Coach Colin McClure for all his support and encouragement throughout the season and to Captain Mark Connor.

Well done boys, all very proud of you!

Pro-life Kelburne Mens 5s beat Anchor 3-2

This proved to be an awkward game for Kelburne, with Anchor taking an early lead despite having only 8 men. Sam Hunt brought the score level with some nice build up play on the right side but still Kelburne looked unsure about how to deal with the Anchor counter attack. Top goal scorer Don Tervit was brought into the action and it wasn’t long before he had an impact, nudging Kelburne in front with some nice work inside the circle. The lead didn’t last long and again Kelburne seemed unsure about how to defend another counter, allowing Anchor to level 2-2 going into halftime. Conditions were very warm and going into the second half Anchor were expected to tire, especially with only 8 men still, but Kelburne still struggled to find the net.  Some desperate defending and scrappy finishing frustrated Kelburne but perseverance paid off and Sam Hunt got himself into a good position in front of goal to give Kelburne a 3-2 lead. This match didn’t reflect recent performances by Kelburne but they managed to hold on and bag another valuable 3 points.

Kelburne 5s next game is against Hillhead 6s on Saturday May 5th at Anniesland with a 2pm pushback

Pro-life Kelburne Mens 5s Beat Greenock 2s

On 14.4.18: In a lovely setting on a balmy (by recent standards) Saturday afternoon in Largs the Kelburne 5s took on a strong Greenock 2nd team. After losing the earlier meeting between the teams it was clear from the start that Greenock were keen to make up for this, and started the stronger shooting just past the right hand post early on. Their early pressure paid off when they won a short corner and fired high into the net, giving Fionn Wilson in goal no chance after just 5 minutes. Kelburne reacted well as first Charlie Feeney was unlucky to see his shot deflected past and then Sam Hunt had his well taken attempt saved by the keeper, Don was first to react but unfortunately his strike came back off the post. Play then went back up the other end as Fionn reacted well to save following another Greenock attack, to keep the score down. Greenock were then awarded another short corner, but Willie Hunt was out to clear this quickly to make sure there was no repeat from earlier. As Greenock continued to press, Callum Brown broke up their attack and quickly started a Kelburne counter with some nice stick play. This started a period of sustained pressure from Kelburne with Don feeding young Rory Donaldson, who was unfortunate to see his shot saved. Jared Bolland came off the bench and quickly got into the match passing in to Don who won a short. Following some great play from Rory, he laid it back for Dick, whose well struck shot was unable to be diverted in at the back post. As the 1st half was coming to a close, Kelburne kept up this pressure with some nice interplay from Dick and Don and again young Rory and Dick resulting in another shot being well saved by the keeper.  They wouldn't let up and after some great pressing from Jared, the ball broke to Hamish who found young Tommy Austin with a nice pass, and the reverse stick finish was sublime - quickly renamed from the side as the Tommyhawk! With just a couple of minutes left, Fionn had to be on his toes to make sure there was no quick response. There was still time for Rory to force a long corner and after some nice dribbling, a fine shot from Dick was once again denied by a great save. Half Time 1-1. Kelburne started the 2nd half where they left off with Charlie pressuring the Greenock defence to turn over possession. After just 5 minutes, following some lovely wing play from Sam he sent a well struck reverse stick pass to the centre and young Charlie ran in to finish with aplomb, sending it by the sprawling keeper to give the Kelburne team a 2-1 lead. Further pressure resulted in 2 quick short corners, the first a shot from Hamish again kept out by the alert keeper. The 2nd resulted in 2 shots from Don the first saved and 2nd into the side netting.

Following further skill from Sam down the right he again fired into the centre but as the defender missed it Jared was unable to take advantage as it came to him quickly. Another short for Kelburne resulted in a shot from Willie this time, but the same result as the keeper kept it out. After some lovely play from Calum Fleming he cleverly fed into Don who was once again denied by another fantastic save from the keeper. He was certainly out to make sure Don's dry streak in front of goal continued. Hamish then suffered a nasty cut to the eye which forced him off and Dick also had to leave the field around this time which seemed to disrupt the team for a spell. Young Rowan McClure in goal for the 2nd half had to be on his guard and did well to turn a Greenock shot round the post. As they continued to press, they forced a short corner and just as they thought they had scored, Scott Peters stepped in to make a fantastic goal line clearance to deny the equaliser. Unfortunately this only delayed the event as following another short a powerful hit to the bottom corner evaded Rowan's attempt to save it. With only a few minutes left, the young Kelburne team didn't let their heads go down, and as anyone who has watched them this season will know, they fight to the very end of every game, and so it proved once again. Following a great steal from Don he passed in to the centre and young Charlie was there on hand to fire his 2nd and the game winning goal past the keeper, as if to show Don how it's done. A well deserved and hard fought victory, which moved them back up to 2nd in the league.  Full Time: Greenock (2s) 2 - 3 Kelburne (5s).

Next Saturday 21st April Kelburne 5s travel to ON-X Linwood to play against Anchor in a local derby.

Bromac Kelburne Mens 1's Convincing Win vs Western Wildcats 4-1

On Saturday 14th April Kelburne mens 1’s faced a tough away fixture against their biggest rivals Western Wildcats. At this stage of the season every game for Kelburne is a must win game if they want to claim their 14th league title in a row. Wildcats, who are currently sitting 4th, were looking to pick up some points to keep the chasing pack at bay from that fourth play off spot. So an exciting game was on the cards. The first half got underway with both teams trying to create chances without much luck. Wildcats then had a purple patch, winning a corner which was dealt with by the Kelburne defence. The pressure continued and it paid off with a nice reverse stick finish to give the Wildcats the lead. This seemed to spur Kelburne into life, with a lot of ball possession and chances created. A few corners were won and some heroic defending by the Wildcats kept the score at 1-0 but Kelburne weren’t to be kept out. Some nice interplay between Neil McIntyre and Jack McKenzie gave the latter a chance on his reverse which he duly dispatched between the keeper’s legs. As the half drew to a close more chance were created by Kelburne but the Wildcats defence held strong. Kelburne started the second half with purpose and put the Wildcats players under pressure every time they had the ball. This paid off with a number of corners being won and chances created. Josh Cairns eventually gave Kelburne the lead with a low drag flick. Craig Morton added another with a good rebound finish from a corner and Michael Christie completed the scoring with a well worked corner routine that set up a simple tap in for the veteran. Goal keeper Rory Kerr also mopped up the odd attack from the Wildcats to give the paisley side a comfortable 4-1 victory. A solid second half performance will give the Paisley outfit confidence going into their next league fixture with Edinburgh Uni knowing that only victories will be good enough if the title is to be retained.

Goals from Mackenzie, Cairns, C Morton and M Christie for a 4-1 win!
