So close for the 4s against Uddy 5s

Kelburne Men’s 4s v Uddingston Men’s 5s

1/10/2022 - 11:00am

Kelburne M4s 1-2 Uddingston

Scorer: Chris Nelson

A Kelburne squad mixed with youth and experience travelled to Uddingston for an early push back in this league encounter. Before the game captain Willy Hunt set out Kelburne's tactics and the team responded with an excellent opening to the game. The young front line of Angus Menzies and Fraser Berry were outstanding from the start. They put the opposition defenders under pressure, which meant the kelburne midfield were able to pick up the loose ball and really keep the Uddingston team entrenched in their own 25. In midfield the experienced Dick Donaldson and Chris Nelson were superbly supported by Bruce Menzies and Callum McDonald. With all the pressure a chance finally opened up. Chris Nelson rolled back the years with a darting run into the circle, he was then able to wrong foot the Uddingston goalie to calmly slot it into the empty net. Credit must also go to Kelburnes defensive line of Willy Hunt, Ewan Crawford, Jack McKellen and Patrick Hagen (playing only his 2nd senior game of hockey) who didn't give Uddingston a single shot at Fionn Wilsons goal. Kelburne continued to apply the pressure on the Uddingston back line but were unable to add anymore goals before half time. A great first half ended and with more words of encouragement the team came out in the 2nd half to try and do much the same.

The young forward line continuously made leads and were getting themselves in the correct position but that 2nd goal was hard to come by. Against the run of play Uddingston won a short corner and were able to convert with a superb strike to bring the game back level. This didn't dampen kelburnes spirits and they immediately went on the attack creating some good openings and having a short corner themselves. Uddingston stood firm and with less than 10 minutes to go Uddingston got a 2nd goal with only their 2nd shot of the game. Kelburne pushed for an equaliser but were unable to get one. A fantastic performance from the Kelburne team who did not get the result they deserved but a lot of positives to take in to their next game.

The kelburne 4's play Helensburgh 2's on the 22nd October and will be looking to build on this performance and get the result they deserve.

Unlucky Ladies downed at Stirling

Kelburne Ladies 1s v Stirling Uni Women’s 1s

1/10/2022 - 2:30pm

Kelburne L1s 3-7 Strathclyde

Scorers: Simone Upman (2) and Charley Austin

The match started off to an unfortunate note with Stirling scoring 2 quick, yet rather simple goals which showed Kelburne were on the back foot. The first quarter Kelburne struggled to find themselves and it showed on the field where there was a lack of marking and all players ended up feeling rather aggravated by the low quality of umpiring towards both teams.

At half time, the situation was re-assessed and a few changes were made which saw Kelburne beginning to put up a fight after being 4-0 down. Two counter-attack goals were scored by Simone Upman, one being a solid back foot shot which had been one of the drills in the past weeks training, and the other being a reverse stick hit to send the ball soaring into the roof of the net. This lifted the team moral, however this was not enough to stop a few more simple goals getting past the Kelburne young, inexperienced goalkeeper, Lilly Davis. Despite the best efforts of all the Kelburne players who were all given rather specific roles to combat the Stirling side but it was not enough and after Kelburne managed to capitalise in a short corner to put their 3rd goal in by Charley Austin where she stayed calm and composed on the ball to put the set piece link up with Simone Upman smashing into the backboard, however it was too late and Stirling managed to hold and extend their lead for the rest of the game. The final 5 minutes of the game saw Kelburne replace their goalkeeper with an extra field player which helped them to put an end to the Stirling attack. The ladies all showed great character to continue fighting right up until the final whistle but a lot of work is still to be done.

The ladies now look ahead to Sunday the 9th where they will come up against lower league WIT in their first round Scottish Cup match and trust the week will be filled with positivity and good preparation.

High 5 for the Ladies 1s

Kelburne Ladies 1s v Strathclyde Uni Women’s 1s

24/9/2022 - 2:20pm

Kelburne L1s 5-2 Strathclyde

Scorers: Simone Upman (2), Charley Austin, Iona Ashby and Rachael Ewing

With Strathclyde uni taking pass back Kelburne ladies put a high press on the Strathclyde defence which led to forward Simone Upman striking a brilliant top left hit within the first 2 minutes. putting Kelburne ahead by 1 goal. Kelburne keep possession by passing among themselves and made very attacking leads putting the Strathclyde goalkeeper under pressure. At 13 minutes in to the first quarter Kelburne have their first short corner which is injected by Jenna Brolly stopped by Rachel Ewing and then scored, top D strike by Charley Austin . Kelburne win another 2 shortconers but do not capitalise. For the rest of the quarter Kelburne are looking comfortable. As the second quarter begins, Kelburne continue to hold a good structure with Emma Downie, Upman and Ewing all applying pressure on Strathclyde’s defenders and taking advantages of their mistakes. Around 25 minutes in Strathclyde take off their goalkeeper due to an injury which they then replace with 12 outfield players. After halftime, the game becomes more even as Strathclyde women use their extra player to their advantage. When Kelburne are in the D they take their chances which results in one of the Strathclyde players stopping the ball with her body. A penalty flick is awarded to Kelburne and scored by Upman making it her second goal of the game. The ball does enter Kelburnes D seeing new keeper Amelie Laraway saving some difficult shots. Strathclyde are awarded a short corner but do not capitalise. Kelburne manage to intercept and play towards goal, with Iona Ashby eliminating players into the D and scoring. Kelburne now 4-0. This is then quickly followed by Strathclyde attacking at pace, scoring their first goal making the score 4:1. The final quarter sees Strathclyde being awarded another two short corners which they score in the second. Kelburne try and keep possession with high balls up to the forwards and get awarded a few short and long corners which they do not capitalise on. Within last few minutes of the game Kelburne score the final goal by Ewing with a strong strike top left from the edge of the D. This pretty much leads to full time with a 5:2 win for Kelburne ladies.

3 points for the Men's 2s over Watsonian 3s

Kelburne Men’s 2s v Watsonian Men’s 3s

24/9/2022 - 12.20pm

Kelburne 2s 3-1 Watsonian 3s

Scorers: JG Shepherd, Andrew Duff and Callum McCaffer

Kelburne took to Glasgow green on a rare sunny afternoon. Shaky start with watsonians scoring straight from push back with a smart aerial into Kelburnes 25s that took the defenders by surprise, a quick pass from watsonians and the ball was in the net before Kelburne were able to switch on. After this the pressure continued to build with Kelburne second best and out of shape for spells. However some good defending from returning Adam Bain and Dick Donaldson got Kelburne to quarter time only 1 goal down.

2nd quarter JG scored with a quick sweep into the net after his first shot was run down by watsonians on an option from kelburnes first short corner. Kelburne then began to push on in the game, however it was still very even until JG found A Duff from the sideline who quickly moved the ball to M byrne on the baseline and received it back for a simple 1-2 to finish smartly.

3rd quarter a well won short was nearly converted by M Byrne flick to the keepers right hand side. A smart save with keepers stick pushing the ball wide with ease. The game began to grow more in kelburnes favour in short spells but Kelburne and watsonians both battled for control. Kelburne almost added another through smart play

In the 4th quarter Kelburne found a 3rd goal from quick build up starting from S Robbie into Scott love who played a first time ball into the D finding M byrne who was able to square quickly for the Calum McAffer to latch home a quick shot into the right side. After this tensions began to rise and after a quick break down the centre M Byrne was bundled off the ball illegally in a challenge that resulted in a yellow card to Watsonians. However the drama was not over as with minutes to play Watsonians broke 2v1 on kelburnes, with the keeper to beat the warzone player fluffed his lines and Kelburne were able to let out a collective sigh of relief.

All in all a tough test for Kelburne, but one that the squad was able to battle through. They look forward to a tough game away against Dunfermline 2nd Xi next Saturday.

Men's 2s earn point in competitive start

Kelburne Men’s 2s v Greenock Morton 1s

17/9/2022 - 2pm

Kelburne 2s 2 - 2 Greenock Morton 1s

Scorer: John-Gerard Shephard (2)

Coach Chris Caldwell took his new look young squad down to Kilmacolm, to play local rivals Greenock Morton Hockey Club, in their opening match of the 2022 Reginal League 2 campaign. The youthful squad is littered with potential, their learning curve will be assisted and mentored by the experienced and evergreen Steven Berry and Don Tervit.
A good warmup and team talk from new coach Caldwell translated into the game, the embryonic Kelburne side settled well into the game against an experienced and competent Greenock team. Play was balanced and end to end. However, towards the end of a very promising quarter, some of Kelburne’s inexperience was exploited. Greenock was able to upgrade a free hit to a short corner due to some naïve defending. The initial set piece was not defended well, giving Greenock a further opportunity. From this the attacker was given too much time and space to place his shot beyond the reach of young goalkeeper Ally Glen, to give Greenock the lead as the quarter ended.
A message of belief and control from Caldwell encouraged the young squad out for the second quarter. Greenock Morton exerted significant pressure, but the team withstood it, and began to impose their brand of hockey. Good ball pace from Tom Hunt, Gary Brolley, and veteran Tervit round the back released Steven Robbie on the right flank, he was able to advance and play in Ewan Carmichael in an attacking position. The wily captain drove along the baseline, into the D to draw a foul. From the resultant penalty corner, a training ground set piece move resulted in John Gerard Shepherd wrong foot the goalkeeper, before smashing his shot past the man om the line to equalise. 1-1. Kelburne had the chance to move ahead when the ever-improving Adam Jack was set through after clever play by Willie Crighton and Berry. The youthful forward was denied by the GKs quick readjustment and reflexes. HT 1-1.
Kelburne had fought their was back into the game, which was finely balanced. Caldwell stating a stronger first touch, better communication, and control would help benefit their cause. Now believing that they belonged in this league, at this level KHC’s young side grew into the second half as the better team. Pushing GMHC back into their D for long periods. Indeed, it was from one period of sustained pressure that the breakthrough came. Unfortunately, for the wrong team. Kelburne won a foul outside Greenock’s D, poor intensity allowed the defence to set up before Kelburne was ready to play, leaving a defensive pass as the only option. As KHC tried to recycle possession, another poor pass put a fellow player under pressure. Despite keeping the ball, and passing to a defender, Kelburne dwelt on too long on the ball, and had it stolen. The Greenock forward was able to win the footrace and finish beyond the exposed Glen. 2-1.
Disappointment did not affect Kelburne for long. Good hockey and quick passing round the back created space for Bradley Bruce to step out of defence, his long pass set Martin Byrne attacking the D. He exchanged passes with Berry before dragging his shot narrowly wide. Parity was soon restored. From a PC, Carmichael exchanged passes with Tervit, and despite having the option for a shot, played in the better placed Shepherd to expertly slot home. 2-2.
The final quarter continued in the same vein, with KHC searching for a winner. Byrne came close with a couple of chances. A PC, having confused and eliminated the Greenock GK, Byrne’s goal bound flick was illegally stopped by the body of a defender on the line. The inevitable penalty flick was somehow not awarded. The second chance came from a training ground set piece, which gave him a chance to deflect a strike past the keeper. Unfortunately, the great run was not matched by a heavy touch as the deflection whizzed narrowly past the post. Perhaps next time, a fellow forward would have converted the wayward touch… The enterprising Scott Love was almost rewarded for his phenomenal work rate right at the death. A slick passing move presented the midfielder with a good opportunity, a brilliant intervention from the gk diverted the goal bound strike past the post.
An entertaining game finished 2-2. Coach Caldwell was delighted with his charges: “While we still have lots to learn and improve, the effort from everyone, the development, and the improvement that everyone has made in such a short space of time has been fantastic. I’m really looking forward to our journey together this season!”.

Men's 1s start with Impressive win

Kelburne Men’s 1s v Monarchs 1s

17/9/2022 - 2.20pm

Kelburne 1s 5 - 1 Monarch 1s

Scorers: Tommy Austin, Jay Berry (2), Ciaran Wilcox, Iain Scholefield

Kelburne’s Men’s 1st XI started the new Premiership season with a home fixture to newly promoted side Monarch HC from Dundee. The team is relatively unchanged compared to last season, the squad for Saturdays’ game was entirely made up Kelburne produced players who all came through the well established youth set up at Kelburne.

The Mens 1st XI are a youthful group with a number of older heads to bring some experience. With several players representing Scotland at a range of age groups. This season sees Michael Nicol take up the position of Captain with the support of Vice Captains Miles Goldie and Ciaran Wilcox. Veteran player Iain Scholefield take up a role as an assistant coach, helping M1 coach Gordon Shepherd and M2 coach Chris Caldwell where possible.

The game also marked the start of a working partnership between Kelburne HC and the University of Scotland, UWS. They are going to help video games during the season to which will benefit both the university with their courses and aid Kelburne with their video analysis of games.

Start of Game

Kelburne went into the first game of the season looking to get a positive start as during the preseason they have being producing solid performances without getting the results. So, it was essential that got off to a strong start against newly promoted Monarch, who were a relatively unknown entity.

Monarchs started the game strongly, keeping possession of the ball whilst and looking go to play long balls into the Kelburne circle. Kelburne settled into the game and weathered the early pressure. Monarchs created the first clear chance on goal when by winning a penalty corner early in the first quarter. Set piece specialist Boag of Monarchs dispatched a low hard flick to the Lewis Berry’s left-hand corner. However, the keeper pulled off a superb save to deny him the opening goal whilst showing off his shot stopping calibre.

Kelburne grew into the game and had spells of good possession resulting in winning their first penalty corner. This produced the first goal of the game, Sam Hunts flick from top circle was partial blocked by the first runner but Tommy Austin expertly put the ball into the net despite it coming at a high angle.

Monarchs reacted well from going a goal down and challenged Kelburne with a series of long balls and aerials. They were rewarded with another penalty corner. Lewis Berry showed that the first safe was no fluke with another ‘cat like’ save low down to his right, from Boag’s second flick of the game.

The first half was finished off with another penalty corner to Kelburne which was well saved on the line by the Monarch postman. Kelburne went to half time feeling in control at 1-0 but new they had to push on to get the next goal.

Half time 1-0

Kelburne’s control of the game continued into the second half with them producing a number of nice phases of play. With strong performances from youngsters Jared Bolland and Andrew McGrane leading the way. The quality of play was rewarded with the teams second goal of the game, when Jay Berry linked up well with Andrew McGrane. The initial shot being blocked by a defender, but Berry was on hand to slot the ball home.

Berry scored his second of the game from a penalty corner, being helped by a deflection off a defender. The teams fourth goal came soon after from a penalty corner with the initial corner hitting a defenders foot. The retake was bundled in by Ciaran Wilcox from a Jay Berry delivery.

Both teams lost a bit of discipline during the second half with several cards being dished out by the umpires Hart and Monaghan. Kelburne picking up a couple of green cards and Monarchs a yellow for repeated poor tackles. During this period Monarchs pulled one goal back when they created a good move down the right and play the ball directly into the circle, which was then deflected by a Monarchs forward passed the Kelburne keeper Lewis Berry.

Kelburne regained their composure and scored their fifth goal of the game. Again, Andrew McGrane was involved and had a shot blocked and then played the rebound across the goal which was delicately deflected by Wilcox towards the goal to only hit the post. However, midfielder Iain Scholefield was on hand to pick up the rebound and play the ball above the Monarchs keeper into the net.

The first man of the MOTM award for the game went to forward Jay Berry for his two goals and strong all-round performance. With Andrew McGrane coming in a close second.

Next Games

Next week the team will face a sterner test when they travel to the capital to play Edinburgh University at Peffermill on Saturday and then Sunday sees them face Inverleith at Glasgow Green, 2.20pm. Looking forward to seeing a good support at the games.

Men's 3s put up a fight against Hillhead 3s

Kelburne Men’s 3s v Hillhead 3’s

17/9/2022 - 12.15pm

Kelburne 3s 1 - 6 Hillhead 3s

Scorer: Dick Donaldson

The 3rd XI faced a tough start to the season against the reigning West Division Champions, Hillhead 3’s, at a sunny Glasgow Green. This was a new look 3rd team with a mix of some experienced heads and some young players who were experiencing this level for the first time.

The game started in a frantic fashion with Hillhead dominating possession whilst Kelburne looked to settle into the game. Hillhead had the better of the opening exchanges with some smooth passing but we’re kept at bay through a mixture of good defending and some missed opportunities. Early in the first half and Hillhead took the lead through open play before managing to bundle home a short corner at the near post. Kelburne then settled down a little and some great interchanges in the midfield brought the ball to Dick Donaldson who scorer a fantastic reverse hit in to the bottom right of the goal. Kelburne then had an opportunity to equalise through a David McGee short corner but a toe from the goalkeeper turned it wide. With the first half coming to an end, Hillhead managed to grab another short corner and managed to bundle the ball home after a good save from Rowan McClure.

Half Time - 3-1

The second half started in a calmer manner with the word at half time being to hold the shape and look for the easy ball. The chances were a mixture with some good runs from Kelburne leading to another short corner that broke down and was counter attacked by Hillhead to make it 4-1. Tiredness set in amongst the Kelburne team and this allowed the more experienced Hillhead team to build the pressure. After a couple of last minute tackles and goal line clearances, finally Hillhead broke through, twice in quick succession, to score two simple chances and for the game to finish at 6-1 to the defending Champions.

A tough start but a performance to build upon and that will hopefully yield results as the season goes on. The 3s are not in action next week due to the September weekend but will be back on duty the week after where they will look to continue their development.

Ladies 2s start win strong win!

Kelburne Ladies 2s v Clydesdale Western 5’s

17/9/2022 - 4.30pm

Kelburne L3s 3 - 1 Clydesdale Western 5’s

Scorers - Jen Morgan, Heather Young, Jen Owne

The ladies 2’s starter their season against Clydesdale Western 5’s with the late pushback at Titwood.

1st quarter:
This new-look Ladies 2s team didn't take long in getting used to playing together and there was some great interplay from Kelburne in the first quarter. Kelburne were dominant in attack with Mhairi MacPherson making some great forward runs putting the young Clydesdale team under pressure. Clydesdale did well to absorb the pressure, including some great play from their Goalie who was performing well. Eventually this dominance earned a well deserved goal, neatly slotted away by veteran midfielder Jen Morgan.
2nd Quarter:
Kelburne pressed from passback and started to attack down the left with great linkages between Alice Ferguson and Jen Owen. Again this strong offensive play put pressure on Clydesdale's defence and they responded by showing they were dangerous on the counterattack with their fast, skillful players. Good defending from Bella Martin and Becca Feeney ensured that these attacks came to nothing. However, fabulous attacking play down the right led to an inch perfect cross in front of goal that just needed the slightest touch to make it 2 - 0 but it wasn't to be. Kelburne had to wait until later in the quarter to be rewarded for all their attacking play when a pass across the goal found Heather Young on the backpost where she slotted the ball away to score her debut goal for the 2s.
3rd quarter:
Clydesdale came back into the game with a more organised and consistent period of attacking play, a loss of concentration and mix up in defence resulted in a goal for the home team. Kelburne didn't let their heads go down and slightly against the run of play they counterattacked with Jen Owen showing all of her pace to beat the defence and score Kelburne's 3rd goal.
4th quarter:
In the final quarter of the game play was fairly evenly matched in the centre of the park, but the consistency and tenacity of Kelburne's young midfielders including Esther Walker and Isla Christie ensured that Kelburne continued to threaten to score. Even with end-to-end play Kelburne proved to be the stronger, more dominant team and they continued making advances down the wing, they just couldn't get the clinical finish and 4th goal they deserved and so the game ended with a 3 - 1 victory to Kelburne Ladies 2s.
Next game: Glasgow Accies 2s on 8th October.

Kelburne Ladies' 2s Beat Ayr 1s 2-1

It was a bright and sunny Saturday afternoon on 9th November that saw a young Kelburne Ladies 2s take on Ayr Ladies 1s. With the return of a couple of more experienced players, the coach was looking to win the game. Kelburne dominated possession in the first half, with some good linking play between Abbie Irvine and Sara McGlennon down the left wing which resulted in one of many short corners. The straight was saved by the goalie. Morven McEwan and Charley Austin worked well in midfield and the build-up play resulted in Maddy Bower picking up the ball at top D and scoring with a reverse hit. The defence of Freya Halliday and Rebecca Finney were largely involved in clearing up loose balls and building up play from defence. The second half saw Ayr approach the game with more determination, however, GK Rhiannon Smith made some great saves to keep Kelburne in front. A ball cleared from defence was pounced upon by Laura Carlton who dribbled skilfully towards the D where she passed wide to Isla Taylor at the back post who volleyed it past the goalie making it 2-0 to Kelburne. As the Ayr team looked to get a goal back, the midfield of Jen Owen and Jessica MacKenzie worked tirelessly to break down play and help the defence. Despite Kelburne fighting off Ayr’s attack, an unlucky short corner given against them in the last 5 mins saw Ayr take a strong straight strike and score. The final score was 2-1 to Kelburne which was an excellent result for the young team against the experienced Ayr team and gave them a positive mindset for their away game vs St. Andrews the following day. Well done ladies!

Saturday 9.11.19

Kelburne Ladies' 1s Lose to Grove Menziehill

On Sunday 17.11.19 in the Scottish Cup, Kelburne hosted Grove Menziehill, a team sitting in 3rd position in Scotland’s premier league. In sunny, icy conditions it was touch and go to see if the pitch would be playable. Nevertheless creative warming up by both sides ensured corners of pitches defrosted in time. The young Paisley team were dazzled during the opening 10 minutes as the experienced Dundee outfit, boasting 3 current internationalists and a former GB player dominated possession. Impressively Frances Strain and D’Arcey Campbell worked doggedly in defence, at times putting themselves on the line, to prevent Grove creating scoring opportunities. While Holly Hendry and Kerri McGinnity closed down their opponents in midfield relentlessly. Unfortunately an opener came in the 21st min when Grove found a foot in the circle, and expecting a corner the Kelburne defence didn’t contest when advantage was played and the ball was unopposed placed by Emily Irving’s left foot. The wind came out of Kelburne’s sails a bit after this, lack of concentrating and within ten mins Grove had tripled their tally to ensure they went into half time with a comfortable 3-0 lead. The 2nd half started very positively for Kelburne with forwards Jessica McKenzie and Dalia Stewart remaining higher up the pitch and pressing enthusiastically. Kelburne created a lovely attack down the left hand side when a transitioned ball from Rachael Ewing-Day was excellently waited into the corner for Hendry to slip onto before being fouled. The free hit found Ewing-Day who turned past her defender and into the circle, where her low reverse unfortunately hit the outside of the goal. Moments later however relentless Grove broke into the circle to claim another corner. Irving steadfastly dealt with the initial strike nevertheless the rebound found their creative striker who pulled out a magnificent reverse lob to beat Irving. Similarly a few minutes later this time from a Morven McEwan ball down the left, Abbie Irvine found herself alone in attack and did splendidly to claim a corner with some fast stick work in the circle. Strains strike hit the keeper however and Grove again broke with electric pace. Another individual masterpiece was unleashed in their direction when the Grove striker again reversed a top corner first time strike into the roof of the net. Then their final goal came in the final few minutes when Kelburne’s high press was countered and Irving was left exposed in the circle in a 2v1 situation. The game finished 6-0 to the travelling Dundee side, with the score line not reflecting the performance of the young Paisley outfit whose tenacity to attack and keep driving forward left them at risk from Grove’s pace of counter attack. Matched against one of the countries best sides the young team looked more than capable of creating and competing, they just need to start finishing. Most Valuable Player was voted as D’Arcey Campbell, the young centre back who defended calmly and passed with lightening speed.

Kelburne Mens' 4s vs 5s in Kelburne derby!

Saturday 16.11.19 was Derby Day for the K4s and K5s - From the very start the 5s set the pace and immediately had the opposition on the back foot with Fraser Scott forcing a short corner 2 minutes in. The well worked corner came to nothing but the high intensity set by this young side was relentless and Kelburne 4s struggled to get over the halfway line. A couple of players were asked to play out of position in this game, Dylan slotting into a more central role and Rory leading the line up front and full credit to them, they didn’t look the least bit fazed. There were also a few new faces, Reece, Declan and Adam stepping up from the 6s. After some lovely flowing Hockey on the edge of the 4s circle, Dick managed to pick out Tommy who’s first instinct was to shoot, unfortunately the ball struck Ewan Crawford on the head but after some timeout he managed to recover and return to the action. The 5s were content to play the patient, passing game, building up from the back and flowing moves down both flanks kept the 4s on the back foot. At 15 minutes the 5s made their breakthrough with some intricate passing, inside the circle, Rory, Callum and Andrew linking up to pick out Jared drifting in at the rear post and slot his shot past the keeper. It was 25mins in before 4s had their first real chance on goal, this highlights the team effort of the 5s to keep them at bay. Just before halftime Callum Brown almost scored, surrounded by defenders and no passes on he somehow managed to dribble his way through and with only the keeper to beat, slid his shot past the wrong side of the post. Starting the second half, the 5s piled on the pressure again but 10 minutes in the 4s managed to counter attack, winning a short corner at the other end. The corner was well defended by the youngsters and they again set about dominating this game to the final whistle. Declan and Adam then combined well only to be denied from getting a shot in, Tommy picked up on the loose pass out to then hit a reverse shot over the crossbar.

With 10 minutes left on the clock, Fraser played a superb defence splitting pass, to pick out Jared who then drove forward towards the baseline, cutting his pass back to Rory in the circle to hit a fierce reverse shot which the keeper did well to stop, but Tommy was fast to react and picked up the rebound to unleash his shot into the roof of the net making it 2-0. Great performance all round, great pressing from the forwards, a solid midfield and dependable back line ensured the well deserved victory.

Well done all!

Kelburne Ladies' 1s Draw vs Cala Edinburgh 1-1

On Saturday 16.11.19 ..and at home in Glasgow Green, the Kelburne Ladie's’ 1’s faced Cala Edinburgh Hockey Club in National league 3. The young side appeared up against it in the opening spell, with the strong Edinburgh outfit commanding possession. However the Kelburne nerves subsided and towards the end of the first half had begun breaking down their attacks and playing themselves into the game. At half time the score remained 0-0. Nevertheless the visitors came out fighting in the second half and their pressure paid off when they opened the scoring in the 55th minute. A fast break down the left hand side was expertly transitioned across the circle and swiftly slotted past the Kelburne keeper by the lone striker. The best period of the game for Kelburne occurred after this goal, with the defence bravely stepping up the pitch to keep Cala camped out in their own half. A well deserved equaliser eventually came for the Paisley team when a corner was calmly claimed in the 60th minute. Although Megan Ralph’s shot was cleared off the post her rebound was superbly slotted beyond the Cala keeper. The next 10 minutes saw both teams throw caution to the wind in search of the illusive equaliser. Both sides came close on different occasions, however, the vibrant home support was instrumental at driving the young Kelburne side across the line. The game finished 1-1 and the Kelburne MVP was GK Emily Irving, whose crucial saves ensured a share of the points for Kelburne.

Kelburne Mens' 6s Miss Out to Uddingston 5s

On 9.11.19 - Kelburne’s normally very full roster was decimated by injury and call-offs and as a result met Uddingston 5s at the On-X with a bare-bones squad. With several players playing in positions unusual to them Kelburne’s young guns faced a lively Uddingston team and more than matched them for most of the game. Early in the game Kelburne scrambled the ball away safely but in 15 minutes Uddingston converted a short corner for1-0. After a good save from Ali Glen in 17 minutes Uddingston netted the rebound and made it 2-0. Kelburne pushed forward and were unlucky not to score from a short corner in 20 minutes. Mark Fulton and Declan Magee combined well for a shot on goal in 24 minutes. Kelburne were pressing for a score but Paul Brown had to make a goal-saving clearance in 31 minutes and Kelburne held out for 2-0 down at half-time. SECOND HALF In 42 minutes the Kelburne young guns linked up well and forced Uddingston to defend their zone well. Uddingston survived this spell and in 57 minutes scored number three when Kelburne couldn’t scramble the ball away. Worse was to come in 68 minutes when the Uddingston forwards cashed in on Kelburne trying to get something from the game by pushing Uddingston deep into their own half. Uddingston broke away and finished with a good reverse stick shot. Kelburne never stopped trying and pushed Uddingston right to the end but Uddingston rubbed salt into the wound by scoring right on 70 minutes despite a great save by Ali Glen. 5-0 flattered Uddingston but a lot of Kelburne’s young players learned a lot about themselves today and are taking their game to a higher level every time they wear the black and gold. Great effort guys !!
