Pro-Life Kelburne Mens 5s Beat Giffnock 2s

On 2.12.17 - Kelburne started positively and in the 5th minute an early attack was cleared by Giffnock. At this stage Kelburne had most of possession. In the 10th minute Kelburne won a short corner but a great save on the line by Giffnock defenders denied the opening goal. A break away by Giffnock was intercepted by young Scott Peters with a lovely tackle and clearance. At the other end a great move by Don Tervit in which he beat 3 players lead to a great save by the Giffnock keeper. Solid defending limited Giffnock to a few opportunities. Another attack by Don on 13 minutes resulted in a short corner which was well saved but Sam Hunt was at the back post to tap in for the first goal. Kelburne defended well with a tackle from young Callum Brown which Scott Peters cleared. A clearance by Callum Brown broke up a Giffnock attack and the outlet pass to youngster Aaron O'Hare lead to some great play up the left hand side. Great play by Sam Hunt who played the ball across the box to Don who could not miss for the second goal. Kelburne continued to push and great play from Willie Hunt passing to Ian McIntyre to Don won another short corner Kelburne which came to nothing. A great interception from Scott Peters to break up the play as Giffnock tried to get back into game. End to end play but a great substitution by Peter Robertson replacing Aaron with Jack Nelson who got a great pass from Dick Donaldson to score his first goal and Kelburne's third. A pass from Don puts Jack clean through but the keeper saves. At the other end a great save by Matthew Retson in the Kelburne goal and good defending by Callum Brown who wins the ball and clears the danger. Dick with some lovely play and his chip hits the cross bar Half Time Kelburne 5s 3-0 Giffnock 2s

Giffnock try to up the tempo and get back into this game as second half starts but another youngster, Callum Fleming, collects the ball and with some great play down right hand side passes to Don who scores a brilliant goal. This deflates Giffnock and from then on it is mainly Kelburne. Great play from young Jared Bolland wins a short corner for Kelburne from which Sam Hunt responds quickest to score his 2nd goal after Don hits the cross bar. Great play from Sam with a lovely pass to Jared who just misses. Kelburne keeper Matthew pulls off a great double save and Scott steps in to clear danger. Great play by Sam who passes to Dick for the goal of the game. His shot rockets off the left hand post and bar into the goal. Giffnock win a rare short corner but good defending prevents any danger. More good play from Giffnock but a good interception from Ewan Crawford clears the danger. Callum Brown clears to Dick in middle but the attack breaks down. Good play by Ian who passes to youngster Roc Hart who is unlucky to lose ball. Great play by Don who shoots only to be denied by a great save by the Giffnock keeper but Aaron O'Hare is at hand to strike the ball home. More great play and Jack Nelson comes on to score his 2nd goal of the game. This has been Kelburne’s best performance off the season and another goal quickly follows. This has been an impressive display today and Dons’ hat trick goal brings up 10 Hamish Walker passes 4 players to pass to Dick who quickly moves the ball to Don who can make no mistake.

Full Time Kelburne 5s 10-0 Giffnock 2s.  Going into the Christmas break this puts the development team in the top 3 of the league. The next game is scheduled for Saturday 17th February at Glasgow Green against Western Wildcats with a 1-30pm pushback.

Pro-Life Kelburne Men's 2s Draw vs Edinburgh Uni 2s 1-1

On 18.11.17 - The Kelburne 2's hosted Edinburgh Uni 2s knowing they were in for a tough game following a previous 1-1 draw earlier in the season. On a rare sunny afternoon in Glasgow both teams started reasonable well but with neither creating any clear cut chances in the opening 15 minutes. The first major talking point happened midway through the first half when Andrew Duff received the ball up at the top of the circle skipped passed one defender and in the process of taking it round the keeper was bundled over in what can be described as clumsy tackle at best from the keeper. Both umpires looked at each other and with neither making a decision play ended with a hit out to the defence. Minutes later after some good work down the left side from Mike Jones his pass found Ross Wallace on the base line who again looked to be fouled but managed to stay on his feet to get a shot off but it was comfortably saved. It was Edinburgh Uni that could and probably should have taken the lead when their forward found himself free in the circle but dragged his shot wide. In the final ten minutes of the half Kelburne won two short corners but failed to convert either. In a fairly even half both teams showed enough to believe they could push on for the win. Half time 0-0

After a spirited team talk from coach Colin McClure, Kelburne began all the brighter trying to press Edinburgh Uni higher up the pitch. This led to Kelburne winning the ball in more dangerous positions but unfortunately some wayward shooting and some last ditch tackles kept the score line goalless. However, with the higher press from Kelburne, this did leave some gaps which the Uni manage to exploit with their fast counter attacking style. Fortunately, from Kelburne’s point of view, these attacks came to nothing thanks to the back four of Mark Connor, Fraser Scott, Stuart Robin and Phil Nijsen. Entering the last ten minutes it was Edinburgh Uni that took the lead through a penalty flick beating Douglas McEwan low to his right. With five minutes remaining Kelburne broke out from the back and when Ewan Carmichael found Mike Jones inside the circle his clever square pass eliminated the goalkeeper to allow Ross McPherson to finish in what would prove to be a deserving equalising goal. Edinburgh Uni pushed hard in the remaining two minutes to find a winner but thanks to Douglas McEwan in the Kelburne goal the team held on to take the win. In the end it was a good point for Kelburne against a strong and disciplined Edinburgh Uni team . Kelburne 2s take on Grange 2s next Sunday in the final game before the winter shut down.

Pro-Life Kelburne Men's 5s Beat Helensburgh 2s 3-2

On 18.11.17 - First Half and Helensburgh scored a goal in the first minute, catching the Kelburne defence napping. Kelburne, who had started slowly, came more into the game and started to create several chances. Midway through the first half  Kelburne equalised thanks to a Don Tervit's goal after some lovely stick skill within the D. Kelburne continued to press having the best of the play but could not get the go ahead goal. In the dying minutes of the first half Helensburgh took the lead from a break away. The attacker beat Willie Hunt, the last line of defence, and scored from short range against young keeper Rowan McClure. Half-time: Kelburne 5s 1 – 2.Helensburgh 2s Second Half Kelburne started the second half in control limiting Helensburgh to a few break aways. They had the best of the play for all of the second half, squandering numerous chances including several short corners. Midway through the second half Don scored his second goal, very similar to his first, to draw Kelburne level once more. Kelburne pushed forward looking for a deserved winner. In the last few minutes of the game Kelburne were awarded a penalty corner . The ball was heading to goal when it struck the foot of a Helensburgh player, penalty flick to Kelburne. Hamish Walker stepped up, took the penalty and scored to give Kelburne a deserved victory. Full-time: Kelburne 5s 3 – 2

On 11.11.17 the Kelburne 2s Were Up Against Hillhead

Continuing their good start to this season, having put a 'St Mirren-esque' season of last year behind them (where if everyone is honest the twos should have been relegated), the current season has been a pleasant surprise. Saturday's match was testament to this where they produced a performance that many would have thought impossible for them to pull off, winning by a five-goal margin.

It was a slow start for Kelburne - Hillhead took full advantage of this in the opening minutes when Mikey Nicol was disposed and Hillhead took a fine chance but luckily for Kelburne they were bailed out by the cross bar.  Kelburne responded well to the early pressure, making a quick counter which resulted in Andy Duff's deflected shot going in following a good ball in from C. Caldwell.  Hillhead was left like rabbits in the headlights when Kelburne doubled their lead through Rory McClure. "I really hope something good happens soon" said a nervous Hillhead player following the initial Kelburne dominance.. Hillhead was rewarded with a short corner but it came to nothing following Logan McClure making a fine save. Following some good build up play which resembled that of the Spanish national team circa 2010 (Football!) C. Wilcox played a wicked fast ball from a straight drop on to R. Wallace - no goal this time.  Play continued with a goal from C. Caldwell before half time.  

HT 3 Kelburne - 0 Hillhead 

There was a buoyant atmosphere amongst the Kelburne players at half time and Colin made an inspiring talk. Sadly, however, this did not last long as Hillhead took their revenge scoring a very forgettable goal which was overshadowed by an infinitely better Kelburne goal. The Galaticos-esque passing continued from the first half which lead to this third goal which was scored following more good service into the D by Duff and was tucked away by C. Caldwell for his second of the afternoon. Yet more good Kelburne play followed with Duff making a run which made Marandonna's run against England in the 1988 World cup look rubbish except for the fact he didn't actually score. He did however redeem himself by scoring soon after, it was alright. Then M. Nicol scored a drag flick from a short corner. Poor discipline gripped Kelburne with both S. Robin and J.G. getting shown yellow cards. Hillhead made some pressure but Kelburne stood firm and did not concede.

In conclusion this game may well go down in history in the minds of many Kelburne players who so valiantly put Hillhead in their place. While there is a long way to go in this season, there is already a marked improvement from last season where goals were hard to find and squad numbers low. And isn't that something we all like to see.

Barbara Morgan Wins SWiS Official of the Year!

Scottish Hockey official Barbara Morgan has won the Official of the Year Award at the Scottish Women in Sport (SWiS) Awards in Glasgow.

The Official of the Year award is presented to the official who worked consistently and fairly throughout the year and recognises the hard work and dedication that referees, umpires and match officials make to playing and the competition structure of their sport.

It is tremendous recognition for one of Scotland’s top officials who has year-on-year contributed to the sport in Scotland.

Barbara has a strong international reputation as an official and is currently graded as the highest-ranking Technical Official in Scotland by the FIH.  In a highly successful year for Barbara she was Technical Delegate for the RABO EuroHockey Championships in Amsterdam in 2017, a tremendous achievement.

She also serves on the Education committee (working group officials) of the EHF and is an FIH Academy registered Educator for Officials.

SWiS held the ceremony on Friday 10th November in the GoGlasgow Hotel in Glasgow. The event was hosted by sports broadcaster Emma Dodds and celebrated, recognised and rewarded the achievements of female athletes and respective support staff and volunteers.

Scottish Hockey CEO David Sweetman said, “I’m delighted for Barbara to have won such a fantastic award. It’s a great success for officials and for hockey and I’d like to congratulate Barbara on the well-deserved recognition from Scottish Women in Sport.”

4.11.17 - Away Game at Auchenhowie

  With a strong team on Saturday morning, Kelburne had a slow start to the game with a lack of communication in the opening minutes due to the cold weather.  An early 5-minute goal from Western put Kelburne on the back foot. The goal was due to stupid mistakes, starting from the forward line with a lack of communication from midfield giving the young Western boys a 1v1 on Doughie McEwan who made an excellent save, but the ball then managed a sloppy tap-in afterwards putting them a goal ahead. If anything, this boosted Kelburne's performance and they then started to dominate the game (One of the young Western boys even commenting on this whilst marking the forward line!).  With little over 3 minutes to go, Andrew Duff equalized the score unnerving the opposition, 1-1. A few minutes later Duff then managed to put one over the bar giving Murray, Western's goalie, a fright!

   Kelburne quickly took control of the second half and continued to press the Western youngsters regaining the ball every time they tried to take possession. With only 8 minutes gone in the second half, Duff passed along the front of the goalie from a great run into the D and passed giving Rory a secure deflection into the backboard!  2-1 at last. Kelburne's structure fell away a bit after that and the boys started to play as individuals.  However, the Kelburne boys were determined to up the goal tally. On the 12th minute Lenny motored down the pitch and took a great strike at goal but it went wide.  Youngster Niall Taylor then drove the ball down the pitch to youngster Ross Wallace who crossed to Duff to take a strike.  Western took the ball forward this time but Connor quickly regained possession and drove the ball back down to a screaming Tom who took a shot. 18 mins gone and Fraser H drove forward (looking threatening) with the ball to Duff.  Western then missed a short corner - Lenny was quick to take possession passing to youngster Ciaran Wilcox who quickly passed the ball on to Duff.  The Western goalie then broke play with a minor injury.  Western were looking like they might score at times but Kelburne kept possession for the last 2 minutes of the game and the score remained at 2-1.

As a forward line, Kelburne could have scored a couple more goals from great passes from the side of the park and straight to top D but we still secured a solid 3 points to carry on the season with.

In total, Western entered the D 7 times during the game compared to Kelburne with over 30 'D penetrations' with 7/8 short corners - think we all know what Tuesday's training session will be covering!

Pro-Life Kelburne Mens 5s Lose Out to Clydesdale 4s

4.11.17 - The young Kelburne 5s side travelled to Titwood to take on league leaders Clydesdale 4s in a late pushback. This was always going to be a difficult game and so it proved. Clydesdale started on the front foot having most of the pressure but having few clear cut chances and Kelburne always looked dangerous when they pushed forward. At the back youngsters Callum Brown and Scott Peters were having excellent games and all over the park the Kelburne youngsters were working hard to try and match the more experienced Clydesdale side. As Kelburne came more into the game they managed to earn a couple of penalty corners. From one of these Dick Donaldson fired Kelburne into the lead after 20 minutes. A flowing Clydesdale move 5 minutes before halftime ended with one of the Clydesdale youngsters firing the ball into the Kelburne net at the far post. No further goals meant both teams went in at halftime 1-1.

HT Clydesdale 4s 1-1 Kelburne 5s Clydesdale came out in the second half strongly and Kelburne struggled to get the ball out of their half. Some resolute defending kept the scores even but eventually Clydesdale made the breakthrough to take the lead with a well finished goal. Kelburne almost struck back as Rory Donaldson picked up the ball in the Clydesdale circle but fired wide. With about 10 minutes to go Clydesdale got a fortunate third as a double deflection turned a shot going wide into the Kelburne goal. The character of the Kelburne team has never been in doubt and they enjoyed their best spell of the game pushing Clydesdale back. A mix up from a Kelburne penalty corner fell to Callum Flemming at the back post who fired home to bring the score to 2-3. Kelburne pushed forward and a Don Tervit drive managed to get him by the keeper but he had to fire the ball back across the goal but no one could get the final touch for an equaliser.

Next Saturday, 11th November Kelburne travel to On-X Linwood to take on local rivals Anchor with a 2pm pushback.

Bromac Kelburne Mens 1s Beat Edinburgh Uni 1s

On 4.11.17 - Bromac Kelburne 1st XI were on home soil as they took on visitors Edinburgh University. The Edinburgh side have started their campaign with a number high scoring games, however the Paisley side were determined to command the game. Kelburne settled into the game early on and stroked the ball well, constantly probing the Edinburgh defence but failed to convert on a few chances. However Edinburghs forward line carved a couple of corner chances, the first was a deflected corner which was met by a strong leg save from young McClure in goals. Edinburgh University then dispatched the latter corner with a drag flick into the top left, in what was their only real circle penetration in the first half. Kelburne stepped up their tempo straight away and came close with a number of efforts from Johnny Christie, Josh Cairns and Jack Mckenzie. The breakthrough came after a nicely worked counter play between Michael Christie and Iain Scholefield played Johnny Christie into work the goalkeeper only to make a top save, spilling out to Michael Christie who smashed home a smart reverse stick finish from a tight angle. HT 1-1 An encouraging half-time team talk from Gordon Shepherd sent the Paisley side out boyantly which lead Kelburne going 2-1 up within 10 minutes. This time through patient build up play on the left side leaving Chris Nelson with a composed finished, setting the tone for the remainder of the game. Kelburne continued to spray the ball about through long spells, distrobuted out from Cairns, Bain, Maitles and Morton that allowed the midfield to carve more chances. Kelburne wrapped up the game with a strong run from Jack Mckenzie who struck a reverse stick pass to Chris Caldwell, who redirected the ball into the goal to make it 3-1. Overall a very controlled and focused performance at home as Kelburne take 3 points.  MOTM Michael Christie.

Bromac Kelburne Mens 1s Beat Western Wildcats

Today, 28.10.17, saw the Kelburne Men's 1's return to league action after last weekend's disappointing loss to Grange. They were up against a young western team who were in a rich vein of form and undefeated so far in the league. The game started at a good pace with western looking to defend deep and hit Kelburne on the counter attack. This meant Kelburne had a lot of possession but were finding it hard to break down a well structured defence. The pressure was starting to pay off with a couple of corners being won but some good defending by western kept the scores level. Johnny Christie also had a chance that cannoned off the post and out to safety. Words of encouragement were given at half time and more of the same was required to get that all important first goal. The first meaningful chance of the second half fell to western who thought a deflection was goal bound but a fantastic save for you Kelburne goal keeper,  Logan McClure the score stayed even. The first goal came midway through the second half when josh cairns fires home the opener from a penalty corner. A second soon followed when cairns found himself on the base line with the ball and he managed to fire it into the roof of the net to give Kelburne a 2-0 lead. Kelburne did create a number of good chances but some top class saves from the western goalie kept the score at 2-0 at the final whistle. A very mature performance by the Kelburne team who will be looking to build on this for the rest of the first half of the season.

Pro-Life Kelburne Mens 2s Beat Uddingston 2s

Kelburne Mens 2s v Uddingston Mens 2s  -  28/10/17

Kelburne saw an early start to Saturday morning, making their way to Uddingston for a 10:30 push back. Following a successful weekend, when Kelburne managed to seal 2 wins from 2, the team was determined to build on these positives and pursuing them into the following game.

It was evident that Kelburne were not fully hyped up for the game, following a fairly sloppy warm up compared to a determined Uddingston side. It took some time for the team to settle, which finally lead to a break from defence to just outside Uddingstons D. The ball was slipped out to the left from Frazer Hutchison in the centre, where Connor Bain was able to run it into the D, and a short corner was awarded. Kelburne saw a quick pull out to Ross Macpherson, who slipped it past the keeper and into the goal (1-0). Upon a successful short corner, Kelburne weren’t expecting an eager Uddingston side to react so well, and let the opposition steal their first goal, to even the score sheet out (1-1). Heads went down, although it was noticed and Kelburne kept the positive chat up, and carried on. Kelburne managed to demonstrate some great aspects of play, in which the opposition could not keep up. This lead to some fantastic field play from the midfield, who were able to work the ball into the D and Andrew Duff at back post, was ready to grab his first goal of the season (2-1).

The team talk set heads straight again, as both teams made their way on to the field, following a frustrating first half. Kelburne worked hard to further the win, but just couldn’t put the ball in the back of the net. Uddingston did well to keep kelburne out and threaten the Kelburne side with some quick entries into their D. Kelburne fought hard and won a short corner, which allowed defender, Frazer Scott to take Kelburne's lead further, with a straight strike from the top of the D, into the back boards (3-1). Both teams began to tire, making things difficult for one another and a green card was issued to the Kelburne side. It didn’t take long for Kelburne to capitalise on yet another opportunity, where a fantastic ball, worked around the defence, came screaming into the Uddinston D. Unexpectedly, young forward Kieran, nipped through the oppositions defence and tapped the ball into the net (4-1). It wasn’t over yet, as Uddinston were able to fight their way past tired Kelburne legs and into the D. A short corner was awarded, which in turn brought the score to 4-2. Towards the end of the game, both coaches were kindly ordered to leave the pitch and cool off elsewhere, after frustrations became too much to handle, for some. The whistle sounded, and Kelburne was relieved to seal a 3rd consecutive win and another 3 points on the table.

Bromac Kelburne Mens 1s Lose Out to Grange

21.10.17 - In what was a top of the table clash, Kelburne's men's 1st XI traveled to Edinburgh to take on Grange who were only behind them in the league on goal difference. The game started quickly with both teams pressing high up the pitch however it was Grange who were having the better of the play with Kelburne struggling to keep the ball for extended periods of time. However, as the game went on Kelburne began to grow into it more and create some good chances in which they were unlucky not to convert. The best chance of the half came after some great counter attacking play led to Jack Mckenzies shot being illegally stopped on the line. A penalty stroke was awarded which unfortunately was not converted, a massive let off for grange. The half continued much the same with Kelburne beginning to have to better of the play come half time. HT Grange 0-0 Kelburne. The second half started the way the same way the first finished with Kelburne having more of the ball and better of the play, however a slack pass into midfield was intercepted and grange got quickly on the counter with an overload which led to a reverse stick shot finding its way into the bottom corner. As the second half continued Kelburne began to press more and more however to corners in quick succession saw Grange increase their lead from 1 to 3. The game continued for the last 10 minutes with Kelburne pressing as high as possible and Grange looking to hit on the break but there was no more scoring for the rest of the game.

FT Grange 3-0 Kelburne - A disappointing result for Kelburne however they know that dropping points early in the season does not put you out the title race and that every game until the last matters.

Pro-Life Ladies 2s Beat Dundee University 2s

28.10.17 - After last weekend's first league defeat for the Kelburne 2s ladies, they were determined to execute right from the start of the match. From the first whistle the teamwork and self belief was evident. Kelburne charged up the pitch with sharp, solid passes that seemed to find the end of their own players stick every time. It wasn’t long before Captain Jen Morgan dribbled through Dundee’s players and smashed the ball in for Kelburne's first goal of the match and one of best goals of the season so far!  Jen continued to distribute the ball cleanly to her keen players who were all hoping for outcomes. Phillippa Saddler picked up one and skilfully scored the second goal. Dundee worked hard to regroup but it was Kelburne that continued to dominate. However against the run of play, due to a lapse in concentration just before halftime, Dundee capitalized on a gap in defence and the half-time score was 2-1.

Fortunately, Kelburne's 2s upped their intensity even more in the second half and there was no stopping Jen’s army who made it very difficult for Dundee to find any breaks. Megan Ralph ran half the pitch dodging players and deservedly finished it with a goal. Kelburne's defence did themselves proud working together and solidly sealed any gaps preventing the young fit team of Dundee capitalising as they tried to manoeuver their way through. Great feeds up the pitch gave Holly Hendry opportunities where she showed grit and determination and deservedly heard the sound of the back board twice from her accuracy.  A high work rate from all players at all times during the game sealed the fate of the match. Another goal from Megan Ralph's second goal brought the final whistle score to 6-2. Kelburne ladies 2s left the home pitch with their heads held high again, ready for anything, feeling hopeful that next weekend's match against Grange EL 2 will bring a similar result.

Kelburne 2s were eager to get a win after a inconsistent start of the season.. Missing a few players due to holidays the squad was motivated to keep the 3 points in Glasgow. Kelburne displayed one of their better performances and did not give Menzieshill a chance to get in the game. The team was rewarded for their efforts when Rory McClure scored a tap in goal after some great work by Andrew Duff. After the first goal Kelburne continued to put a lot of pressure on the opposition and scored another goal through Ross McPherson who displayed his 3D and finishing skills after a great pass by Bob Martin down the line. The team had a good halftime chat where slight adjustments were made, still not giving Menzieshill a chance to get settled into the game Kelburne continued their first half play. A third goal was scored by Philip Nijsen who had an easy job after great work done by Andrew Duff once again. Despite the lead Kelburne never stopped working hard and putting in a lot of effort. Mark Connor scored the last goal, finalizing the score at 4:0. A well deserved win for Kelburne.

Why did you want to get involved with the junior section at Kelburne Hockey Club?

Kelburne Hockey Club social media hashtag is #wegrowtalent and it’s my belief to grow talent within a sports club you need great people and support. This is where I believe Bromac can play a major part in the future of KHC and in particular the juniors. This will not be a one season wonder but an investment so I can see my daughter and nephew and hundreds of new KHC juniors enjoy many years of success and pleasure and hopefully become national, international, commonwealth or Olympic stars. Having joined KHC at 14 from playing at Castlehead I’m proud to still be involved and have many friends who still play at the highest level or coach. Some of my proudest sporting moments have been with KHC.

What do you hope will be the outcome of your involvement?

Very similar to the above first and foremost the success of the Junior section. I always class the juniors of Kelburne to be like Manchester Untied Class of 92 but we have been doing it for years. You do not become Scottish champions 13 years in a row without successful juniors. Jockey hockey is such a success due to the coaches that in years to come there will be even more Ralph’s, Forysth’s, Nelson’s, Christie’s, Scholefield’s and Bain’s the list goes on and on and this comes for Juniors. 

What is the history of Bromac Ltd?

Bromac was formed in July 1988 and celebrate 30 years next summer. We are a timber preservation and damp proofing firm that specialise in wet rot, dry rot, woodworm, rising dampness and basement conversions. We have a wealth of building knowledge and have large collection of sub contractors and are not happy to help with a variety of projects. We are one of Scotland’s few privately owned timber preservation and damp proofing firms. Myself and Neil are proud to support Kelbunre Hockey Club and look forward to even more success and hopefully one day jockey hockey on a Whitehaugh Astro Pitch.
